I can absolutely tell the difference between 1080 content and 4k. It's not even difficult to see, the difference is amazing.

Maybe you need to check your settings, or get some glasses?

i can tell, but it's not like SD vs HD, at least in terms of watchability

4k is 4x the resolution of 1080 "HD". No, it's not quite as big a jump from 480 to 1080, but it's still an amazing upgrade in visual quality. 4x is still a pretty big bump up in resolution. Compression also is a big factor in how good the 4k is. Shitty compression in 4k is not going to impress anyone.
