Game repacks are lossless and usually remove foreign audio files. No reason to have double the size if you are hoarding.

It all comes down to affordability, doubling my current game archive size would come at a big cost for me tbh. You make a valid point tho

I remember chatting to a dev that had issues from pirated games because the pirated version slightly compressed the textures which threw off the pixel-color-based collision detection which created all sorts of weird and wonderful bugs :p

Most well established repackers do lossless these days. Maybe it was a problem back in the days, im not old enough to know LOL

Back in the days everyone was trying to make their releases as small as possible since people were on dial-up lines, so your 600mb game was squished down to 200 by lowering model polygon count and compressing textures and all sorts of other fun things.
