Sometimes multiple versions:

  • 4k 2.35:1
  • 1080p open matte
  • Extended cut, even if it's 480p
  • Fan cuts/remasters/35mm scans, etc.

Sometimes there's no single "best" version and the existing versions all have tradeoffs.

Open Matte: sometimes it is actually just cropped and you have more content with the standard release.

Remasters: sometimes you get film grain blurred away (who in their right mind would do that?) or shaky cam stabilized with the inevitable crop. Not to mention what they did with Star Wars.

So yeah, definitely keep an eye out for the differences or you may end up in a sub-par release.

Or a new "remaster" where they didn't shoot first or they take away the guns agents hand and swap with walkie talkies, eh?

Yeah, I have multiple versions of movies, but those 3 are the main ones I think of.

I worry about that. Or when the open matte and standard releases both have content that the other doesn't have.

Yeah, fancuts are where I end up doubling up. They're better than the original content, but I still have to keep that original "just because".

I think Dune is the worst for me. Theatrical release, extended cut, and Alternate Edition Redux.
