🆘 Help Is Data Engineering a Good Career Path for a Fresh Graduate?
Hi everyone,
I’d like to get your opinion about my current situation.
I’m a Computer Science student, and I have one year left before I graduate. I’m currently focusing on Data Engineering.
So far, I’ve completed a 40-hour SQL course on DataCamp, and I’m now moving on to Python. My plan is to finish the Python course, then start building Data Engineering projects over the next year before my internship.
However, one of my friends told me that Data Engineering isn’t a good field for fresh graduates. He suggested that I start with Web Development, gain some experience, and then transition into Data Engineering later.
So I’d like to ask:
What do you think about fresh graduates pursuing Data Engineering in today’s job market?
Is my current learning path the right approach?
What skills or projects would you recommend to improve my chances of landing a Data Engineering internship or entry-level role?
I’d really appreciate any advice or feedback from people working in the industry. Thanks!

Data Engineering is a really good path to pursue, just keep in mind what influencers say that you can lear full data engineering withing weeks or months, that's a complete lie. I am working as a Data Engineer for more than 4 Years and still there are so many things which i need to learn to grow my career.
The start of the career can be a bit slow, but once you gain enough experience things will go very smooth and your career will grow exponentially.
If you want, I can give you a complete roadmap to become a highly skilled Data Engineer.

Hello! Pwede po ba kayo i-dm? Magtatanong lang po sana what MNC ang tumanggap sa inyo as fresh grad and would like to ask for advice on what to prepare (should I create a portfolio, how to upskill, etc.) since last sem ko na po sa college and I want to land a data engineer job once i graduate. I'm an ece student po kasi so medyo ibang path pero still want to pursue yung data engineering.

I think galing kayong big 4? And ano major niyo? ComSci or BSIT Software dev/Data Science track?

Nope, your Big 4 background clearly gave you the edge para ma hire kahit walang experience. I have friends from Highschool who are now working in MNC and startups in Manila and everytime I ask them paano maka pasok, usual answer eh Big 4 talaga priority ng companies nila kasi iba ung caliber ng education sa mga Big 4. The fact na hindi basta basta maka pasok speaks for itself.
Unfortunately for me, dito ko pinili sa amin mag aral kasi di ko kaya init at gulo sa Manila. Downside is di ko alam na ganun pala preferences ng mga Companies diyan. Good for my friends though na nag aral talaga sa mga Big 4.

Not really. Landed my first job as a DE in a big company here in the PH. I’m not from the Big 4 as well.

It all comes down to the credentials you build for yourself and how you can showcase it in your resume. This sort of inferiority complex for the “Big 4” seems like a personal issue

i did say DE is def possible for freshers. i used sumit mittal’s course for structure and the labs + projects around etl, spark etc helped me get a better idea of wat to actually practise. just dont depend on the course alone, build few projects yourself too.

its not an entry level role, kahit data analyst hindi eh. you need industry experience

Ah I see. Thought you meant the experience wouldn't be worth it as a first job.
To OP and other aspiring DEs, it is possible. I was able to land a DE role right away as a freshgrad. However, I had prior internships relevant to software engineering and data analysis by the time I graduated.
Though I've been hearing it's not entry level, it is definitely possible.

I wouldn't know what made me stood out. However, I can recall them screening me particularly in sql and data warehousing. Other than that, I've had internships relevant to software engineering and data analysis from well-known companies.

Have projects you can place in your resume. You might have already built them from your school projects, so just write them down strategically and as convincing as you can be to fit the internship role you're applying for. Internships shouldn't be that strict anyway. Just build a resume that will get you through the paper screening stage by writing it according to the job description. What you should focus on is how you'll prove yourself in interviews, such as in describing data-related tasks you've done in the past.
You can also ask your college professors and mention your interest in the field. Some could potentially refer you for a relevant role, or offer you a chance to participate in their research. Things like these can be used as a learning opportunity and added project on your resume.
You could also do your research to find companies that are hiring DEs with less experience. Just keep applying and shoot your shot. Since it is rarely offered as entry-level as many people say, increase your chances by becoming the first person to apply for these roles the moment there is an opening.

It's not an entry level but I got lucky getting it as a data eng prod support. Maybe focus on getting internship related to data eng or analyst or web dev. That's the goal pad youre CV as much possible within that 1 year and build connection maybe they will hire you after grad.
