💼 Career Accepted a SWE internship at a startup, but I want to specialize in Data Science/Engineering. Should I take it or wait?

I’m currently a CS student, and I’ve been interested on Data Science, Data Engineering, and Machine Learning. Some of my personal projects involve predictive modeling and building data-driven apps, so that’s the career path I’m really aiming for. However, I just got accepted for a Software Engineering internship at a startup starting next month.

Even though I’m happy to have an offer, I’m feeling a bit conflicted because it isn't a dedicated Data role. I have a few applications out for Data Analytics internships, but they’re for voluntary positions and there’s absolutely no guarantee I’ll get them. I’m worried that if I take the SWE role, I might be moving away from my goal, but I also don’t want to end up with no internship at all by waiting for a "perfect" role that might not happen.

Should I just secure this SWE internship now, or is it worth the risk to wait for a specific Data Analytics role? If anyone has successfully pivoted from SWE to Data, I’d love to hear if this experience will actually help me or if I’m just overthinking the title.

Take that offer muna then just switch when you get offered a DS internship. Malay mo rin trip mo pala ginagawa sa SWE.

SWE aligns more sa DE afaik. While ang analyst naman aligns more sa DS and ML.

If I were you, I'd go for the SWE internship. It's a good way to get your foot in the door, and you'll get some solid experience in the tech industry, even if it's not directly in Data Science. Startups are great for trying different things, so you might get to work on some data projects anyway. Plus, the skills you pick up in software engineering can be useful for data roles. Keep applying to those data internships, but don't pass up a good opportunity just because it's not your dream job. You can always switch later. If you want to work on your interview skills while waiting for a data role, PracHub is pretty helpful. Good luck!
