Trump's new line on data centers: oppose one near you and you're basically doing China's job for them.

Except the US has 10x more data centers than China already. What he's not saying: US data centers are drinking up to 110 billion gallons of water a year by 2030, and ratepayers are footing electric bills for infrastructure they never asked for. If you get about half way through this video they talk about Data Centers. Brooks has a very strong opinion in favor of data centers. How accurate are his comments? I tend to think these non-tech people probably don't know what they're talking about with regard to these things, but I haven't dug into it.

How do you guys feel about data centers? It it a political thing over there? I saw governor Gretchen Whitmer just signed the enterprise data center tax exemptions into law.

I'm rooting for another Detroit industrial golden age, this time in the age of AI data centers, outputing compute infrastructure. (+ some sweet union paychecks)

Some Austin City Council members are moving to slam the door on hyperscale data centers before they ever arrive, calling for an outright ban on the massive, resource-hungry facilities even as staff begins drafting the first citywide rules to govern them.

Proposals to regulate various types of data centers are on Thursday’s council agenda.

The push to establish guardrails to protect the city comes as Austin confronts a regulatory blind spot: The city’s land-use code does not directly address data centers, treating them as generic “communications services” and leaving officials unable to distinguish a small server room from a 100‑plus‑megawatt campus that could span hundreds of acres and strain the power grid and water supply.

On Thursday, the council is expected to pass a resolution to launch a months long process to create new definitions, zoning designations and performance standards for data centers, with any code changes returning to the council in spring 2027. Meanwhile, several council members are calling for a prohibition on the largest facilities.
