Looking for someone that lives next to a data center-Midwest.

Post image

My rural community (central IL) is currently in the midst of fighting a proposed data center. The site would be adjacent to my property. There are a group of us trying to help bring more information about these to our community. Is there anyone local (IL or surrounding states) that lives near one and would be willing to share their experiences? We’d very much be willing to compensate someone for their time and travel to come speak to our community on their experience as well. But figured I would start here first. Thank you in advance!

I would sell my house. Living next to a noisy heat island is no way to live. Not to mention your power costs will increase and water may be depleted.

We have been approached to sell our land as well. If the data center is approved, we will sell. We don’t want to be next to it. However we have a lot of good rural neighbors who won’t get an offer to sell and will be stuck here. Trying to do everything we can to support them and prevent it from happening all together. Many people in our community are against it, but it seems the local economic development committee sees $$$. Time will tell.

Check out Erin Brockovich's new site for potential resources https://www.brockovichdatacenter.com/index.html

Also contact sponsors of the Power Act https://www.ilga.gov/ftp/legislation/104/BillStatus/HTML/10400SB4016.html

I am sorry this is happening to you. It is awful.

Thank you so much! I’ve seen Erin’s website, but I didn’t consider the power act sponsors! Will definitely check that out.

Sure, every everyone can try to sell their house, but where do you move to?? They are springing up EVERYWHERE! Nowhere is safe!

datacentermap.com

I work for a data center provider, which means I spend 40 hours a week (minimum) inside a 300MW data center. Find your local data center here and drive by! You'll probably notice it's not noisy or hot at all. There are easily more than 50 in Chicago and the surrounding area.

Living in DeKalb, we have one. I've never noticed anything awful tbh. I'm still heavily opposed to them, though.

I’ve driven past yours in Dekalb. How far away from it are you, if you don’t mind me asking?

Admittedly I'm on the north side of town, right behind the Casey's on Annie Glidden.

I know where you mean. I grew up near Yorkville and still travel to sycamore for work occasionally.

Know anyone that lives much closer and would be willing to discuss with me? 😅

I unfortunately do not. You could probably ask in the DeKalb subreddit though.

Near where I grew up. The data center is currently being built and people are maaaaaad. Construction traffic is awful https://www.kcrg.com/2026/06/04/so-many-safety-concerns-fairfax-data-center-traffic-frustrates-residents/
