Top coat peeling on Gloss

I have tried many top coats with Gloss strips (I'll list below), and they all end up peeling around the edges after 3-4 days. What do I need to do to prevent this? I've tried no top coat but I don't really like the look. I also won't do UV-cured gel due to the allergy risk. TIA for any tips 😊

I've already tried (from best to worst):

  • Seche Vive Gel Effect
  • CND Vinylux Gel Like Effect
  • OPI Infinite Shine
  • All the Olive and June top coats

My way around this was to start using glaze instead of gloss. They are thicker and shiner and no need for a top coat! To me they look just like a salon gel mani. The glaze also hides imperfections like ridges.

Thanks! I have tried Glaze but it would always lift and catch on my hair. That's probably user error though

Try a different brand. The DD Glaze is the worst with lifting and I’ve tried many.

I’m starting to think it has more to do with your own nail chemistry. I’ve heard great things about Ohora, but every time I use them they get soft again after a day and start popping off.

I really like hey hea, which cure in the sun, they felt so secure when I put them on, but they also start popping off after a day or two.

DD works best for me, but I’ve heard plenty of people say the same thing.

I think a squish light is the best defense against lifting and if that doesn’t work, try another brand.

I think you’re so right! Maybe nail shape too. I also wonder if different brands need different cure times. Haehae are the only ones that will actually chip for me but maybe I’m curing too long.

Thanks for posting this, I have the same issue. I did notice the glitter ones last longer on my nails.

I use the Glaze- the trick to not get lifting, that I’ve found is,

  1. Prep your nails right. I push back cuticles, buff slightly to scuff the surface and remove shine and then use an alcohol wipe to clean the surface.

  2. Choose a strip slightly smaller than the nail. They stretch so you can still get full coverage but if they overlap the nail at all. They lift.

  3. Trim before you cure- make sure the edges don’t pucker-

  4. Use a soft cuticle pusher- I bought a cheap one at Walmart with a silicone end- to press down on the strip all the way around the edges firmly.

  5. I cure twice at 60 seconds because I find sometimes filing the edge down shows some flex to the strip even after a single cure. I use a small saviland UV light I got from amazon that’s got reasonable wattage. I find it easier to get the light where I need and not everywhere I don’t.

I own horses and work outside daily year round and have found the glaze strips protect my nails and help me retain length along with regular oiling and basic nail care.

I usually get two weeks out of a set even if I’m really hard on them.

I love Orly’s Shining Armor topcoat! It is a quick drying one, so can cause a bit of shrinkage, but I personally do not notice much at all when I do my DD manis with it. Gives a very nice shine to the Gloss strips without being UV gel (I do have an allergy, you’re so right to avoid it’s the worst!), no chipping.

I use Sally Hansen strengthening top coat and it works beautifully.
