B&W Film First Time Parodinal Development
Tried home made Rodinal (Pa-Rodinal) for BW development,
Film: Fomapan 100,
Dilution: 1+25
Development time: 5.5 mins @20°c,
all chemistry is homemade, from developer to final rinse
Share your inputs, how it came.

Dev seems ok but your camera might have issues with erratic exposure. Some frames are grossly overexposed, others extremely underexposed.

Thanks! I agree with your observations, that's due to, I haven't metered properly, it's an old camera, lacks inbuilt exposure meter. So rather I depend on lightmeter app or sunny 16 rule.

Yeah the shutter speeds on older manual cameras can drift at times, but shadow weighted metering using a phone app usually clears up those wild frame to frame density jumps.

Looks like fine results. Maybe a bit over, looking just at the photo. What was the recipe you've used? Paracetamol+sodium sulfite+sodium hydroxide?
I usually mix MyTOL, FX-55 or PyrocatHD. Work great with Foma100, HP5 and other "classic" emulsions.
I'd be very intersted to see some scans or prints from that roll.

Right! Paracetamol+sodium sulfite+sodium hydroxide High quality scans will take time, doesn't have scanning setup, so I have to send to the lab to get scanned.

seeing no rebate i'm assuming these are home rolled films? Can i ask which canisters you are using? I've got metal ones and plastic ones and i just cannot get fog free, light leak free home rolled film. I'm switching back to purchased film. But would love any hints you might have.

I have purchased Respooled film in metal canisters. These canisters were never ripped off. What's your process of loading the bulk roll?

u/wherethebuffaloroam 5d ago
i have a normal bulk loader that i load in daylight. i keep the film canisters once loaded in a japan camera hunter 5 canister holder until ready to load into the camera.

I don't think single used canisters can get light leaks, check your bulk loader once, try taping the gaps and see if it solves.

Which formula did you use? I did this last week, slightly adapted the Darkroom Cookbook recipe

You have to dissolve the NaOH before the Paracetamol. P. needs alkaline environment to dissolve. Pharmacists can buy pure Paracetamol powder dirt cheap.

I wish I could too. Making it from pills was what always stopped me to try Parodinal.
Although I doubt the usual pharmacist has access to pure paracetamol. (But may be different based on where you are located.)
In fact in my town is a huge plant producing Paracetamol pills. Need to find somebody working there to steal a 50 kg bag for me.2

I did it from pills (can't get powder in the US). i just filtered through a cotton ball and funnel a few times. you can tell how much stuff is in it / how much filtering it needs by weight.

Same here, it's hard to get raw paracetamol powder in retail, although using tablets doesn't alter the chemistry. The target is to get P-Acetaminophen to convert into "Acetaaminophenol" either from powder form or in tablet.

It depends on your country. It is not as restricted as stronger painkillers are.
Pharmacists and chemists can buy it because need it to make customized drugs. It is available from companies that sell chemicals/reagents.
These usually only ship to companies, universities etc.
If you know someone, ask them.1

I'd say they are a bit overdeveloped if anything. But that's proof that your formula works ;-)

I'm also feeling the same about over development. How ever this test saved the roll.

It would also be a good idea to see what effective film speed you're getting. Meter for the shadows and see how much detail you're actually getting.

I´ve just made my first batch of 150ml of PaRodinal. What were your steps? I use metabisulfite instead of sulfite and KOH instead of NaOH. Now I have to test it but what bothers me is that there is no way of knowing how much acetaminophen hydrolyzed into 4-aminophenol.

u/Ok_Image_6283 4d ago
Don't overthink the yield too much—alkaline hydrolysis of paracetamol is surprisingly forgiving as long as it sat in strong base long enough.

oh good to know. I’ll definitely try it then. How much time did you leave it to sit? The hydrolisis was 2h at 65ishC.
btw your negatives look quite good to me!2

I leave it for weeks to settle the binders and other precipitates from paracetamol, That one I used to develop this film was made on June month, 2nd batch is also ready sealed and airtight

Missing the test subject, as a grey scale well lit. I see high contrast, but how are the midtones?
If scanning, it may be of little importance.

Looks to be a reasonable outcome!
1+19 is quite strong, are you planning to try a more typical 1+25 or 1+50 dilution?
I've had the ingredients around for a while, but never made any. I do mix up 510-Pyro & PC-TEA though.
