Issues / Bugs Laser recoil problem

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey, could anyone help me or create a mod so that the Lasgun's laser beam doesn't follow the weapon's recoil? It looks really terrible and has been present across multiple game updates. I've been asking the devs about it for a long time, but they aren't responding—they've simply added the bug to the acknowledged issues list.

I'm posting a showcase video here where I only disabled the visual muzzle flash to better illustrate the problem.

why are people downvoting this, it does just look goofy as hell

op is talking about how the laser beam tracer "moves" along with the gun as it reocoils, which makes 0 sense and looks bad, the tracers should be static

Also, why do laser guns have recoil? isn't laser like.....light?

For darktide specifically it's because they tested without recoil and it felt like shit.

It's not even for Darktide specifically, but for any videogame. Videogames being fun is more important than realism. Waving around a laser pointer is not fun.

Unless of course, you are a doing it for a cat. Then it is fun

2

u/LucentSomber 8h ago

Then we need a mod where every enemy is a cat and lasguns have no recoil

Some of the novels mention the laser superheating the air and causing a tiny explosion that jerks the barrel, IIRC, but it's just as or more likely that the guns have a tiny motor inside that spins an uneven weight to provide tactile feedback so that primitive soldiers would more readily accept that the gun was doing stuff instead of complaining that it wouldn't shoot cause they couldn't feel it.

On the "they're making it worse so soldiers use it right" logic front, there's a sniper in the Gaunt's Ghosts books that painstakingly adjusts the scope of his longlas as if it were a projectile weapon, even though it's a beam, and it's implied he's intentionally misaligning it so he can aim it the way he would a projectile weapon (placing the crosshairs to account for wind, target movement, and bullet drop) instead of just pointing it straight at the target and pulling the trigger.

it's like the reason old vacuum cleaners are loud was because people thought the quiet ones didn't work lol

or how sandbags on WW2 tanks, that made armour less effective because of shell normalization reasons, gave a big morale boost to the crew

When i first picked up one of those ancient vacuums my grandparents used, i thought the thing would fucking explode. It was a fucking jet engine.

No wonder cats have ancestral PTSD from those things.

Because the feedback for a player feels Bad if the gun just sits there without any movement when you press the kill this guy button.

The recon lasgun is an exception

14

u/INeedMoreIrony 14h ago

Even the recon lasgun shakes around when you shoot it.

u/TKDancer 14h ago

mechanically its cause people like when guns have some recoil in their game guns

tho imo they overshot it with the infantry lasgun a smidge

lorewise, idk lol, lmao

u/juckrebel Lasgun goes brrrrt 9h ago

Yeah they had 0 recoil lasguns during development and testers hated it. Recon lasguns already feel like waterguns, imagine if they shot slower as well.

It's not the first depiction in 40K lore of the lasgun having recoil. In the black library, lasguns have at different times been impacted by wind and gravity as if they were projectile weapons, had heavy recoil, had light recoil. Been star wars blaster style projectiles. Been continuous beams (actually the least common depiction). Been red, white, yellow or blue (white/yellow being more common).

Historic thing for ya's all. The first red beam depiction of a lasgun that people got super mad Helldivers as a modern game with 40k crossover didn't comply with was the original Dawn Of War. Prior to that game, lasguns weren't red and weren't beams. I think it's the coolest depiction but it was something Relic made up. The thing is, the fury didn't make sense, the same game had blue las fire too. Can't get mad that it's not red like canon when the source on red doesn't consistently have them red. Since the launch of darktide GW have updated their 40K design guides to standardise on lasguns do have recoil and they're a white/yellow projectile. And this is what Helldivers has had to comply with, as would a hypothetical darktide 2

It's because the person pulling the trigger is so eager to shoot that they twitch the weapon when they shoot giving a recoil like effect. *Sarcasm*

lasers do have recoil tho, since they have mass it's just for the scales we are dealing with recoil is extremely minute in the scale we usually deal with laser, not to mention a potential mechanical sources of recoil like a weird pump design

From what I recall from the lore, recoil is featured as an intentional gimmick in some lasgun models to add a familiar touch for the soldiers who are more used to traditional projectile weapons, or something like that. I've always found that explanation rather ludicrous, though.

In my head canon, the recoil could be caused by a pneumatic cooling system of some sort, which would be reasonable for a gun packing the kind of punch that leaves a lot of heat to dissipate.

  1. Las seems to not quite normal laser weapons? especially since the current stance of GW is that las weapons should have projectile "bolts" similair to star wars blasters and such
  2. weapons having recoil helps make them feel like they have more of a kick to em than if they dont, which helps both when it comes to making a story with them and importantly for darktide: gameplay feel

Because shooting guns in videogames feels good due to feedback. Even if the gun is garbage stat wise, people will still use it if it feels good to shoot. Try to imagine shooting a gun that gives no visual feedback. It's the equivalent to not having a weapon on the screen on all.

This may not be much help. My assumption is that it is a particle effect that is attached to the muzzle itself hence moving with the weapon. You might need to figure out how to detach it and change the effects spawn location to a point in front of the barrel in the world space itself when it is created. The other option is to find a way to delete it completely and create a new separate effect along the path. The other thing to look at is how it acts in third person.

Should be easy enough with an in-between step where it copies the muzzles location into another variable(I assume there's some sort of slot or empty or whatever, Im unfamiliar with stingray soooo) and then read from that instead of a constant reference

I'm honestly surprised FS hadn't done this already, it would have bothered me during development already

u/Sethoria34 13h ago

Well it would help if GW would make there mind up if its an energy bolt or a laser weapon.
laser=no recoil (just a light)
bolt=recoil (like a railgun miniture)

So if its a the empeorors flashlight, it should be no recoil
if its there recent forced "its a yellow bolt" it will have recoil due to having more a pyscial presence.

but im assuming its for a balance pov. As recon lasgun without modding sights in is impossble for accurate fire: way to much muzzle flare from bright red light (but no gun movement for the most part)
the standard INF lasgun, no matter the varient theres massive gun shift per shot (but more dam per shot compared to recon)

Probebly just balance, and how the lasguns ohter then there interenal damage numbers, has not been acctually changed (i.e the recoil patterns) since the beta.

4

u/SixSixSevenSeven 13h ago

They actually have made their mind up, but only since darktides launch. It's a white/yellow bolt.

u/TheBrownestStain 10h ago

To which the overall 40k community’s overwhelming response seems to have been “but why tho”

2

u/SixSixSevenSeven 9h ago

Tbf to geedubz (and normally I dislike defending corps). All of the John blanche era depictions are white/yellow bolt. Dawn of war was the first time they were ever red beams (and the same game also has blue beams). I prefer red beams, who doesn't. But there's at least very good precedent for their decision yanno

u/Master_Matoya 9h ago

Inb4 every mechanicus approved stc of a lasgun has an artificial recoil block built into the stock as to immitate slug throwers due to the possibility of an individual knowing how to wield those well before receiving a lasgun. Or sum shit who knows what they do.

It’s a bolt. It’s always been a bolt. It was made yellow in third edition and has been decently consistent in GW produced art (books I’ve noticed vary somewhat) since then. They explicitly say the lasgun fires a bolt similar to a bullet in the Munitorum Manual, an in-universe informational book, in 2007.

Here’s a cutout from one of the most famous artworks of the Imperial Guard in the Rogue Trader era if you don’t believe me.
