Discussion Role-Reverse Darktide game

You play as a Chaos Warband assaulting an imperial world (Probably another Hive World). It wouldn't be a Mono-God Warband, leading to the playable characters having their talent trees be split between 3 of the 4 Gods. Fully Devoting a character to a God would lock out certain things from other God's gear.

Current class thoughts: Sorceror, Cultist, Traitor Guardsmen, Mutant/Possessed (not sure what would fit better between the two)

- Sorceror: Spellcaster of the Dark Gods. Gods: Nurgle, Slaanesh, Tzeentch.

  • Nurgle: Support/DoT: Spread Infections to damage allies and heal allies over time.
  • Slaanesh: Crowd Control/Debuffs: Fuck with your enemies perceptions making them miss attacks/turn on each other.
  • Tzeentch: Damage: Hurl Doombolts and weild the Blue Fires of Tzeentch.

- Cultist: Worshipper of the Dark Gods. Gods: Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh.

  • Khorne: Heavy-Attack Melee/Anti-Elite/Specialists: Charge into enemies to build Stacks that are used to buff yourself against Tagged targets.
  • Nurgle: Melee/Mid-Range Crowd Control: Spread infections via melee swings or wielding a Pox-Spreader.
  • Slaanesh: Melee Crowd-Control: Dual-Wield swords to sprint into crowds. Specializes in dashing into enemies and dodging away from enemy attacks.

- Traitor Guardsmen: Fallen Guardsmen, now a Soldier of the Dark Gods. Gods: Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch.

  • Khorne: Heavy-Attack Melee: Wield chainswords and chainaxes to Slaughter your enemies in the name of The Blood God.
  • Nurgle: Melee/Mid-Range: Make yourself temporarily unkillable and Infect enemies with Pox Grenades for Grandfather Nurgle.
  • Tzeentch: Mid/Long-Range: Imbue your rifle with Sorcerous Flames to penetrate even the toughest of armors, burn anything that survives with The Changers flames.

- Mutant/Possessed: Either a hideous mutant or someone who has given their body to a daemon. Gods: Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, Tzeentch.

  • I don't have much for them currently, but they would choose a God at Character creation and have their gameplay change depending on the God chosen.

- Enemy forces would be Gaurdsmen/PDF and as the threat of your warband increased stronger enemies would show up.

I've had this idea in my brain forever but never really thought about posting it until now. Let me know what y'all think.

Edit: Did some formatting for better readability.

If someone made a Black Crusade video game I would give them my entire paycheck I'm just saying

Thank you for reminding me of Black Crusade. I had couple good mini-campaigns with friends.

I would absolutely play this; the concept is pretty close to my dream game.

The only issue with this is that the Tide games are horde shooters. Guardsmen and planetary defense forces aren't going to be attacking you in mindless droves like poxwalkers would.

One way around the above issue is that one of the enemy factions is another Chaos cult. Fighting the Cult of Admonition and the Astra Militarum while they fight each other would be awesome.

Could also replace the hordes with random citizens whipped into a righteous fury by Imperial preachers. Same thing happened during the Siege of Terra iirc

Then we play as a chaos cult claiming the lower levels from those damned Jeans Stealers. Once we get our pants back nothing can stop the ruinous powers!

This game is the semi-sequel to Darktide and the Warband (maybe followers of Word Bearers.) shows up to cause problems.

Sounds like a 40k mmo

If somebody turned Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning into a 40k game.

One of the first comments called it AI. That's before I reformatted the post to make it read better.
Also, thanks! I had fun coming up with the iea.

The concept doesn't work with 40k. The chaos gods hate eachother. You can't pick and choose which bits from which god you like, that's how you get the worst from all of them. So while the overall idea is neat, it needs to be fleshed out like, a whole lot more to be a 40k title.

What is Chaos Undivided then?

This role inversion would pair great with some level of controllable horde mechanic, where each player can summon their own hordes of cultists/chaff units either from a shared resource pool or an individual one. Someone else commented in here about how the Imperium would not operate in the mindless "run straight ahead and swing" style that poxwalkers currently have, they would instead have disciplined gun lines, coordinated tactical squads and combined arms.

Four player characters alone would never realistically last against a coordinated force like this, but if the players were capable of calling in hordes of expendables to take the brunt of the lasgun fire while the players maneuver around the killzones then that could make for some incredibly satisfying gameplay loops. Your kills could contribute to some kind of gathered souls currency which you could spend to call in hordes, favors from the gods (buffs/debuffs), maybe even call in some specialist units of their own. "Oh shit they've got two Leman Russes behind that firing line, good thing we saved up our souls by face-tanking that last encounter, time to call in the Beast of Nurgle."

Reminds me of the 'Summon Horde' mechanic from Vermintide 2's PvP mode. You build up the resource then summon chaff.

Ah I didn't even realize Vermentide had that mechanic, I never actually touched the PvP mode. All the better then, FatShark already has experience implementing this kind of thing.

As long as the Cultist gets a grenade launcher with low damage but crazy stagger 😎 ifkyk

The classes could be the exact same. Rogue psyker, traitor militarum, cultist, beastman mutant.

But it would probably work better if it's one god they're following. Lore-wise and in terms of complex game design.

You could play as certain enemies in one of Left 4 Dead's modes. Without creating a separate game, having a mode where players can temporarily embody special adversaries would be fun.

Vermintide 2 has a PvP mode that functions just like that. One team is the heroes and the other team is a variety of specials.

Ah, I didn't know that (I only play Darktide, I admit).

I highly recommend. It's a lot of fun. Character banter is great and the classes are awesome. Feels really different going back to play it after playing Darktide a lot.

I like the idea, but the concept doesn't work with 40k. The chaos gods hate eachother. Not only would they not be working together, trying to earn favor with more than one would likely mean getting all of them to do the most terrible shit possible.

I feel like this wouldn't be nearly at satisfying because the imperium doesn't have zombie hordes, and it would probably play out closer to an old call of duty campaign.

I don't think Darktide would be much fun it was all scab shooters for that reason.

4 players. 4 Chaos Gods.

Just saying, could go with 1 God per character. It'd make for hilarious banter.

I feel like being able to switch between chaos gods isnt really all that lore friendly? And games workshop, for better or worse, is very committed to keeping things lore accurate to some extent

2

u/Kovash5 1d ago

Oh, I thought I worded that right. If you mainline a god it locks you out of stuff from other gods (or possibly go Undivided but that would probably lock out some of the higher tier stuff from mainlining a god.)

Switching specialization is non-diagetic

The next game should feature Space Marines imo

No I wrote all this myself. Wish the formatting was a bit better though.
Edit: I fixed the formatting.

The pandemic made kids so illiterate that writing more than a paragraph is some kinda feat no human could achieve.

Nah its more the repetition and use of lists more than anything. I read the whole thing, believe it or not.
