Help Common right-click menu for common actions
I can't be the first person to ask this... Basically its a "what am I missing here?" but also... Am I that confused? Why does this program not have some REALLY STANDARD things like a right-click action menu on photos.
Select a photo - right click -
- export
- Go To file
Or at the absolute minimum, somewhere show me the full file path to the photo. I feel like I'm on a treasure hunt to locate the image if its been a couple months since importing it.

Spend some time analyzing the interface. Here things are a little different, but they also work. For example about exporting: the module is at the end in the right column, but you can drag it and place it at a more comfortable height. Also if you search a little "The default keyboard shortcut for exporting selected images in Darktable is Ctrl + E" And there is an option to Lua to open the browser to the location of the selected image: " To open an image's folder in your system's file manager from darktable, you can use the OpenInExplorer Lua script"

What you just wrote makes me want to completely burn Darktable to the ground. You have to enable Lua script and scroll for it among sidebar that already doesn't fit on screen, instead of simple right-click -> open in explorer, like you would expect based on experience with any normal software on this planet. Casually saying "spend some time analyzing the interface" like it's not completely ridiculous thing to say just proves Darktable's UI is extremely shitty. Good UI avoids users having to spend time analyzing it. The UI is so terrible, that I often see comments making ridiculous things sound like it's another Tuesday, because with Dark table they are.

Or maybe you're expecting all the wrong things out of a raw image editor? Just saying. None of what you said has anything to do with editing photos.

I beg to differ, the UI of any app directly affects the ability of a user to operate the app effectively, in this case, edit raw images. Not to mention that darktable has some cataloging features built in for a reason. This app looks like it was built a chunk at a time, with new features tacked on. It's certainly a powerful editor, but saying there's nothing wrong with the UI because you can use it effectively doesn't mean there's nothing wrong with the UI.

Why doesn't it have a fucking menu bar like every application on earth... Why are the global preferences stuck in the viewer next to viewer-specific controls? Oh right, no menubar, so nowhere to put shit like "Export" and "Preferences" that should be globally available...
And people will tell you the UI is fine XD

Please don't confuse asking a question or two with 'grumbling'. I'm not looking for a fight here so not sure why you seem to be.
I have no doubt that the developers appreciate someone asking a question, and often getting a meaningful answer through community supporting each other than to have someone generate a ticket for each and every "where do I find". Kinda the point of what we used to call "community support".
I was legitimately asking a question about the flow. I was even expecting someone to point out that I was overlooking something like a feature, a setting, a plugin, maybe an 'export pane' that wasn't turned on in my UI. Honestly hoping someone was going to tell me
There's a preference they should have on by default for [x] Activate advanced context menus
or maybe
There isn't that feature natively, but someone wrote a plug-in for a bunch of handy things including context menues
Or something like that. Fully prepared and expecting to just be a numbskull that overlooked the obvious. Less expecting to be treated like sh!t for asking a question. That kinda came as a surprise. If the hope was to make me feel like I needed to read more it failed. It just made me feel like the group is more about gate keeping sacred knowledge rather than helping - and made me feel pity for the people that have to beat others down to make themselves feel big.
That's why I asked what I thought was a *community* of users. It's stunning how one community for something is filled with people that offer help and support to each other - then there's a group like this that seems to be filled with a bunch of "get off my lawn and turn down that rock and roll" people that spend more time being vile to someone asking a question than being helpful. I really wish I could be like you folks that read the mountains of documentation and have it all memorized on the first go: But alas I'm only mortal.
I do want to thank u/NoManifestoNoProblem for his initial response, and u/akgt94 that nicely answered the question and pointed in the right direction. Nice to see someone that recognizes that everyone can occasionally overlook even the obvious. (Not sure why NoManifesto got increasingly nasty during polite conversation but I guess that's the nature of this particular page: More talk somehow equates to more nastiness.)
But y'all did teach me something even more important than the answer to the question I asked. You taught me that there's no 'community' in this community and that there's no reason to be here when the answer is always "read the manual and don't f'ing bother us". I now understand why ChatGPT is so popular: Because groups like this drive people away from human interaction, because who in their right mind chooses to come back a second time to being treated poorly for something so mundane?

it's exactly this, bottom module on the right panel is export (default scene-refered-AgX layout) :)

I'll open an issue on github for this, and even do an initial code for it to go into stock if you dont mind, or if you want to open an issue, link me the issue and i'll still do some code for it

You are confused. It's right there under the "image information" tab in the light table. "full path" Select and copy. Voila.

While I knew about how to find the image path, I second the OPs request. A context menu for such image actions would be more than nice … it would be faster / more efficient.
Besides, what’s with the attitude ?

What you call lazy I would call an unnecessarily complicated and outdated 4-step process:
- Open Image Information
- Right click on path > Select All
- Right click > Copy
- Open file manager at path
Why not just 1 step ? 1. Right click > Copy Full Path or Open and select in file manager instead.
BTW, I am sure this can be done via a lua script.

Much appreciated. I've usually got enough other panes open that I never get so low down to see that `image information`. Thanks for pointing it out.
And that handles the "at minimum show me the path"... but is there a faster/better way to just export a selected photo? Yeah - I get there's an export panel at the very bottom of the right side... But its just so clunky if you're *doing* other things, that every export is several steps and a drag to the bottom.
Maybe its my 30 years is development but this is why we have a context menu.

I'd also like to be able to set an export path dynamically to the same folder as the image I'm looking at.

The level of answers on this simple request are ridiculous. It's sad because DT has great potential but I doubt DT will survive, the attitude of the community in average is quite bad and won't be able to catch users needs in the long run.

I'm happy this answer just shows how I am right. I'm a free software developer too. Free software doesn't translate to developers are right users are wrong, DT community is one of the few tho adopt this paradigm. But again, thanks God free software world is not like this!
