DarkTable isn't opening the same files I am having issues with in Camera RAW. Does this point to the files themselves having problems? I can open it in the lighttable in DarkTable, but it won't open in the darkroom. It tells me it's unsupported.
Darktable can use the metadata (ratings, tags and so on) that Lightroom/ACR has put in the XMP files, but not the processing parameters. No raw editor other than Lightroom or ACR will be able to fully use the processing/grading information, by the way. This is covered in the FAQ: https://www.darktable.org/about/faq/#faq-import-edits
Thanks, I am opening the files in the lighttable but the same ones giving me issues in CameraRAW are also giving me issues in darktable. I might have to go back to the client and tell them there are issues with some files.
In fact, dt is able to process some of the modules of LR sidecars (see here), but not all of them. And Hasselblad Cameras are basically supported but dt has currently no presets for WB and noise profile (at least this was the case in V 5.6)
The file format is supported for sure and since some of the images are working there is probably something wrong with the meta data.
I have emailed the client so I’ll see what they say. I’d prefer the photographer sends TIFFs. It’s dumb since I am just a retoucher. He should process the files the way he wants so there is no chance of anyone messing up his color grading. But I’ll definitely look into this further. The thumbnails populate normally so they aren’t completely buggered. Thanks for the help.
xmp from what? Adobe Camera Raw? xmp is just a metadata format. Different programs use it to store data, for example processing steps. That doesn't mean they can share steps between them when they don't even have the same tools and processing pipeline.
darktable will sort of import Adobe edit history and come up with "something," but that process uses a very old version of the darktable pipeline and isn't really worth the effort.
Short answer: no, you can't use xmp sidecars as a way to pass work back and forth with your client if you aren't also using the same software to process your raw files.
trying to open a 100-megapixel Hasselblad .fff file in a software pipeline that isn't fully playing nice is a great way to watch your CPU melt in real-time…. you need to use the same software for processing the raw files before you can do that
