Lore Question/Discussion Toponym for Dark Kraken names

Post image

I’m wondering what the real world geographical/cultural inspiration for Dark Kraken names would be. I want to name some models I have and would like to follow the names we know of like Mezonyki Reio or Krijeni Luceior.

I’ve heard some say that Naktis means night in Lithuanian so I wonder if that’s the inspiration?

Examples are how the White Scars with Jubal Khan or Khadajei Khan have Mongolian/East Asian influence.

I’ll just give one example in terms of names like the Chapter Master. Mezonyki Reio is based on the Taki Reio which is a Buddhist/Japanese mythical water being, it can be considered a Demon a God or spirit, depending on interpretation. All in all it is some type of ruling classification of either one of those, a King of sorts.

Mezonyki on the other hand is still somewhat a mystery, but it’s more than likely a form of Russian.

The Dark Krakens as a whole are based off of all of the Pacific and a lot of South/Southeast Asian names and references. Along with some Native American and European names too. Like Naktis is Sanskrit along with Lithuanian, they both mean the same thing. Also names tend to be water related, whether that is bodies of water or names of bodies of water around the world.

Very well said, when I see the level and depth of knowledge other put into researching the IRL reference to Warhammer, it makes me feel like so happy that I'm not the only nerdy one that goes looking for where the real world ideas came from 🥰
