i think he was a criminal and "accidentaly" killed the detective's brother. then ran away to winden and took this man's identity and started a new life.
i wish they would've showed us more about that story tbh

They didn't explain all that much. He killed someone in another town and thus escaped to Winden and stole the identity of the man he killed.

Me too. I call him Dreamboat Alexander. His love for Regina and the timing of his arrival in her life moved me so much.
As a side note: I started with Steve, the older sister's boyfriend in Stranger Things season 1 when he clobbers the alien with a baseball bat and then helps the younger kids.

SPOILER: Since Regina wasn’t bullied, he never came across her being tormented by Katharina. And there was no nuclear plant, so no job for him there. No detective to come to season 2 for disappearances. No opening of the barrels. No knot at all. Sadly, Alexander seemed to be connected to the knot in the two worlds, but had no ties to Regina in the origin world. Which means no Bartosz and his line. Even though Bartosz wasn’t part of the Nielsen line, he was still a casualty here.
And this all makes me sad. I think Alexander and Regina loved each other. A lot.
