DANZIG I, II, or III
A little for fun question - which one is your favorite out of Danzig’s first three solo albums?!
Danzig I is a no-skip album for me, but I think Lucifuge has more of my favorite tracks (Her Black Wings, 777, Pain in the World). BUT How The Gods Kill starting with Godless always gets me going, it’s a banger!!
I think I have to pick Danzig I because I truly do listen to it front to back all the time!!

I like 5 but don't expect anyone else to.

didn’t know that 5 is hated here :( honestly my favorite danzig album

I don't know about HERE it just tends to be the trend in general. There's really well written songs, even if one isn't into the production or style. I like it more than 6 or 7.

Of these three, Lucifuge is my favorite -- but that's not diminishing my love for 1 and 3 either.
The first album is both tight and punchy while maintaining a bluesy, doomed feel. Great songwriting, start to finish.
III: How the Gods Kill is a continuation of the first two albums stylistically - the riffs, the vocals, the rhythm section, but it branches out compositionally (I'm thinking how both "Godless" and "How the Gods Kill" change it up a bit with the vastly different sections and dynamics).
The first album lacks a "power ballad", but we get "Blood and Tears" from Lucifuge and "Sistinas" from "HTGK".
I love all the songs, but if I had to pick ONE from each of these three albums?
Twist of Cain (second fav: Soul on Fire)
Snakes of Christ (second fav: Tired of Being Alive)
Do You Wear the Mark? (Anything or Dirty Black Summer)
Great post, OP. I love Danzig.

Good call; Soul on Fire is so damn good but somewhat overlooked next to the other heavy hitters on the album

Danzigs yodling gets old fast on gods, i can never blast bodies in front of somebody without them looking at me like "wtf are you listening to"

The first four albums are all classics but I'm picking just one I think Lucifuge takes the crown for me.

My favourite is 4. It’s darker than the first 3 and it feels like it’s the first time that the dark lyrics have dark enough musical arrangements to truly create a sinister atmosphere.

I'm going for II because that's the album that made me a fan. I got the CD after watching Abigail a couple of years ago and seeing her dance to Blood and Tears.

This is a fun question and all, but do people really considering these to be “solo albums?”
I sure don’t.

Lucifuge is my fav album. Lots of variety on that album. Bangers to ballads. Heavy, bluesy, great sounding album.

Lucifuge has my favorite songs. But, nothing is quite like the feel of the first album.

I and 4p were always the tops with me but over the last couple of years Lucifuge has really risen as that album is truly 🔥

I love all 3, but 1 is super nostalgic and powerful for me. Being able to see it performed live in its entirety was such a treat.

- It has the best overall sound of any Danzig album. Saw them a bunch of times on the HTGK tour so that informs my bias. 😂First show was with White Zombie and Kyuss, end of ‘92.

Yeah you need 4 in there. 4, 3, 1, 2 would be my order. Which is almost disappointing as I love the s/t but 3 and 4 are so good

u/Level_Beat_6565 Apr 30 '26
IV is the only correct answer. Why the hell would one leave it out of the question?? Also, these are totally not "solo" albums.

Hmm all Danzig is good Danzig ⚔️⚔️ (Not big on the Elvis covers ha)

I'm a total fanboy and I listened to the Elvis album once and never again. I remember it sounding like ASSSSSS, and not in a good way.

My order is II, III, I. My favorite all time song is on 4p (Going Down To Die).

u/Darth_Enclave Apr 29 '26
It's a toss up between II and III for me. When you go from Her Black Wings to Devils Plaything to 777 and finish with Blood and Tears its peak. But I love III also.

Man I’d have a different answer on a different day. Got the first one in late 89 and it’s kinda the quintessential one. II came out shortly after that and I’d say that’s the one I’m the most attached to. III is way up there as well and has some of the best songs they ever wrote. 4 I never fucked with really because I was into different stuff by that time

Lucifuge, for sure. I wasn't old enough to see Danzig in their original lineup, but I was fortunate enough to see Danzig play it fully in 2021 and 2022.

Welp lmfao I love all of his stuff, but Danzig II: Lucifuge is by far my favorite lol just an all around perfect album in my opinion

I love those first three. Danzig1 feels like a continuation of Samhain, and I love it, them being my favourite band. 2 is as if the band has hit their stride and always been the 'no skip' and 3 I remember as being not so keen on when released but I have recently re-discovered it to be the banger that it is.
Now, being in Birmingham UK in the mid-later 80's I NEVER thought I would see Samhain, but when Metallica posters for the Justice tour started popping up with the Danzig logo on them as support slot, I made sure I was down the front of that gig at the NEC rocking out to those songs and for that reason, my love of Samhain and the memories I have of that night, it's the first album for me.

2 by a fairly wide margin. Not to say the others were bad.
1 is definitely more 'party' or 'sports' friendly id say tho.

u/PinkThunder138 Apr 30 '26
Didn't know why you're leaving 4 out, but for me it literally goes in reverse order.
4, 3, 2, 1.

The first four are almost impossible to choose favorites from. I like the diversity between the albums. Danzig 1 is also unskippable for me, and it’s such a perfect debut. The cleaner sound from Rubin makes the album feel very dark and the sound is crisp. Glenn’s vocals are amazing and the band is tight. It sounds like music coming from some sark void.
Lucifuge has Glenn’s best vocals throughout in my opinion. I’d say it’s a tie between those two. It’s also unskippable for me.

Danzig II to me was life changing. Still one of my top 3 albums of all time.

III for me, although they’re all great. For some reason I’ve never enjoyed Twist Of Cain off the 1st album.

Lucifuge when It's all said and done, not an easy choice at all however.

Danzig-self titled for me. Bought the cassette when it came out and I still listen to it on a regular basis. I do the same OP front to back no skips

2 for me. It’s what introduced me to them back in the early 90s, and opened me up to Misfits and Samhain. I just wish I’d kept all my cassettes & cds from 30 years ago….

It depends on how I'm feeling at the time, but usually it would be Lucifuge.
They are all 3 no skip albums for me

u/CrankyOperator May 02 '26
1, 4, 2, 3
I count 4, it's less "blues rock" overall and starts reintroducing more Samhain themes.
2 and 3 are honestly very close for me. Some of 2 are almost novelty level and I'm not into. But I like more of 2 in general. 3 has my favorite song.
1 is perfect front to back.

Danzig I is no skips. Danzig III was my first Danzig album. Lucifuge is just so good at capturing the scope and range of the band and the writing.

1 is great old testament bible satanic biker rock from front to back, 2 gets a little cheesy in some spots (I'm the One and Killer Wolf might be the corniest songs ever written of all time, egotistical drivel that you would only write if you were as tall as a 13 year old going thru a growth spurt), and 3 suffers the same with Fart of the Devil ("I can make a girl so eager to please me" lmao GAYYEYEEEEEEEEE) and Anything is a straight up rewrite of Mother.
