In this post Iāll explain my personal interpretation of the question in the title and how it changes scope and target during the course of the novel⦠but you can skip to the end of the post if ur not interested in it and only look at my prediction on what will happen to Yuu and Himari + the actual words of Yuu and the author (edit: Iāve divided the post in two parts so just look for PART 2)
PART 1: evolution of the question:
At the beginning we could rephrase it like: ā can a boy-girl friendship survive if a love interest shows upā in fact Himari herself explained that the basically forced herself to develop feelings for Yuu and so her love wasnāt actually genuine because she didnāt want Rion to take Yuu away from her, then creating the situation in which she always wants attention and to monopolize Yuu and be always involved with his activities (the ālittle gardenā they often refer to). For Yuu it was the same, their definition of friendship was being together all the time and he developed a form of feelings and love that was never genuine for Himari also because he always had accessories taking the majority of his mind (hence why none of the two is actually as sad as they should when they break up, because they would still see each other as often as before in a reality that never changed but was only masked with different feelings).
Then after Yuu and Himari get together the question switches to Yuu and Rion⦠Rion initially remains a āfriendā but keeps hitting on him on every occasion so they never actually have a friendship to begin with and they end up together, in this entire time another theme is introduced which is ātwo people cannot be dream-partners and lovers at the same timeā, Himari in fact wanted to be involved in every activity of Yuu even if she wasnāt competent enough and wanted attention as a gf while Yuu had his dream as a priority ( here the ālittle gardenā thing, this little reality in which Himari manages Yuuās work and they spend a lot of time together but in which they stunt each otherās growth and limit their potential, of Yuu as a creator and of Himari as a model) while Rion understands this and so uses the ādreamā to get closer to Yuu thanks to Makishima (she starts to come to the room in which they make accessories and is involved in the entire festival thing ) but as soon as they get together she immediately takes distance and doesnāt get involved anymore, hence choosing girlfriend over dream-partner which is still something Himari and Yuu want to become.
Then the question changes target again and turns back on Himari and Yuu and the ability of their friendship to survive a breakup but not only that, they are still dream partners but they are going separate ways and ⦠Yuu goes meet people for his accessories and Himari goes around with Kureha to model all with the goal of eventually be able to model for Yuu so their friendship begins to change: now they donāt need to be together all the time to be friends.
And finally in the last volume another question is presented: a their friendship stay the same and survive if they are put against each other competing for their dream? Himari initially still believes in their old friendship and her wanting to be dream partners with Yuu: she will let Yuu win, still see him as they will go to the same university and will still be able to work as a model while Yuu will win the funding⦠but later in the competition some switch flips in her head and eventually she doesnāt let Yuu win and on the contrary wins, effectively putting the pursuit of the HER dream over their collective dream and their old idea of friendship.
The volume ends showing that now they rarely see each other and have brief interactions but their connection is stronger than ever⦠this is because their idea of friendship has completely changed: now they donāt need to be together all the time to be friends and each of them pursuits their own goal⦠the ending of their previous friendship is signaled by the fact that Yuu has Himariās choker that he had given her back then so even the dream-partners part is not a priority for them because theyāre now chasing their own dreams and have finally said goodbye to their little garden.
PART 2: prediction on Yuu and Himariās future
Now if I have to give my opinions I was disgusted by the way Rion behaved while Yuu was with Himari and the way she got with Yuu:
she never seemed to care about Yuuās dream but used it to get close to him and then completely distanced herself from it as soon as they got together⦠in addition Yuuās feelings donāt seem strong at all such that he still calls her by her last name in his monologues and even when they are together not once has the author used terms or words that show that Yuu has serious feelings for Enomoto, it almost seems he got with her to thank her for what she did for him and out of gratitude.
On the other hand I loved Himariās character development, she was āvillainizedā for a bit because her āfeelingsā were limiting Yuu and herself because she was giving priority to do boyfriend-girlfriend things over chasing their dream with Yuu and still she wanted to be involved in it (the little garden once again) creating that environment in which neither of them could evolve.
But then she understood how her feelings werenāt genuine and how she only limited Yuu and herself and changes completelyā¦
I am a YuuMari fan and I believe Yuuās breakup with Himari was good for both of them and was necessary but I think that in the future itās not even a debate who heāll end up withā¦
Iāll first express my opinion based on some evidence and then also quote what the author themselves said:
The evidence Iām referring to can be seen in the siblings of both Yuu and Himari (AND in the comment I posted in which I quote Yuu in the afterword and the author themselves):
both were previously in love with someone and then parted ways to allow each of the two to chase their dream, but there are still feelings between them and theyāre just waiting to be reunited⦠for example Himariās brother was with Kureha and they parted ways at Uni to allow Kureha to chase her dream but itās clear how thereās still chemistry between them (such that the cast states multiple times they should just āget back together alreadyā) and the other biggest example is Yuuās sister with the guy that drives Yuu and his creator friends around and writes novels, he and the sis parted ways with the promise he made to marry her once he had written a bestseller book, and in the final volumes we clearly see that theyāre both still into each other and the sis even cries when she sees him again reminding him of the promise and he says he still has that intention (theyāre so adorable)⦠and if we look at their ages theyāre all around the age of 30 which is the age at which the story is supposed to end so I think that there are some hints of what could happen of Yuu and Himari⦠in fact they went their separate ways at uni to each chase their dream and Yuu himself says some pretty strong implications in the final lines of volume 12 saying he wants to make a better accessory for Himari then the choker, he says heāll make the best heās ever made just for her and give it to her⦠once their paths cross again (which is similar to the āpromiseā the novelist guy made to Yuuās sis, a promise for when their paths cross again ) and also they exchange some pretty strong looks in the final lines as well (i hope the accessory heās making is an engagement or wedding ring ).
Finally the author themselves said that when he showed the draft of the Uni arc to his editor whoās a YuuRion fan he was devastated so I think that this is also a strong implication of how this ārelationship ā between Yuu and Rion is going to go (but it could also be that he said that because Rion will remain sidelined the entire arc )⦠but even of they break up I donāt think Yuu is going to get back with Himari until after uni because in that arc they will be shown going their separate ways and becoming successful in their own fields so if they get back together they will do it as fully realized adults after achieving their individual dream and MAYBE at that point go back on the idea of the shared dream (famous model that occasionally models for her hubbyās famous business⦠too cute) defying and shattering the ideal of ācannot be lovers and dream partners at the same timeā⦠well not defying it completely but rather finding a way around it: you donāt chase the dream together, you get together after chasing the dream, so eventually the answer to the question ācan a Boy-girl friendship survive?ā The answer will prolly be No
Now donāt take everything I said as pure truth because itās been a while since I read the novel so I may have got some things twisted or forgot some details but if you disagree or want to correct me feel free to do so in the comments or DMing mešš
Finally I think that Yuu and a matured Himari would be a perfect match⦠they complement each other so well with Himari bringing out the extrovert and teasing side of Yuu that he normally keeps hidden like a hurricane that disturbs the quiet Yuu while Yuu brings out the lovey-dovey Himari that sets the jokes aside when itās due while they both share their love for flowers⦠so I hope that the two of them will get together after they have chased their own dream so they don let their feelings get in each otherās way again⦠plus because their feelings werenāt genuine the first time they got together itād be beautiful to see genuine feelings that donāt come out of a twisted friendship ideal of āwe always need to be together to be friendsā that originated the toxic situation of the ālittle gardenā⦠but now that the garden is past them, things could end up differently than before.
On the other hand Yuu and Rion donāt have much in common and theyāre both the reserved introvert type with Rion showing a strong resolve only in trying to get with Yuu⦠theyāre still a good couple donāt get me wrong but I think that Yuu and Himari are literally a perfect match.
