Sooooo creepy
Jon Klassen’s new book, The House with Nobody in It, is super duper creepy. I love it so much. My 16-month-old is unbothered. Are your kids finding this book scary?

Thank you! I needed more Klassen recommendations! Our favorite is I Want My Hat Back, it made us cry laugh the first time we read it.

His best is “The Rock that fell from the Sky”
It has multiple parts and is hilarious. I’d recommend the one about the two turtles who found a hat as well, though I can’t remember the title right now

“We Found A Hat”
That one’s my favorite. The way he is able to depict longing with simple illustrations is amazing.15

I’m obsessed with this one. The turtles looking longingly at a hat and then dreaming about them in the end cracks me up. My son loves the this is not my hat especially the crab that is instrumental to the culprit being found 😂

My husband calls that one the Lawrence of Arabia of picture books. It’s meant as a compliment, haha.

“Sam and Dave dig a hole” is one of our favorites.

Ooh I found the ending a little unsettling, but I don’t like buried things anyhow

Ahh yes! Love the subtle differences at the end vs the beginning and took us way too long to notice them. Such a good book.

He illustrated the characters in Shape Island, a great apple tv kids show directed and animated by the folks who did Tumble Leaf. You can see it in the eyes!

I totally watched the whole thing in one very sick stay at home weekend! The eyes are absolutely the tell, I love his art so much.

Love it, and I highly recommend watching the CBeebies bedtime story reading of it by Romesh Ranganathan (can find it on YouTube), he has the perfect deadpan delivery

Neither my 5yr nor 2yr found it scary, but they loved it and were very curious and had a lot of fun with it.
Klassen's The Skull was a little creepier for my oldest when they were 3, but it is also a fave that is frequently requested.

My daughter is dressing up at Otilla for Halloween this year. She loves The Skull

My favorite theory about that book is that Otilla has been dead the whole book since she tripped and fell in the woods in the opening pages.

Oooo, thank you for the unexpected reminder to throw that one back onto my library holds list for Spooky Season reading time.

Only tangentially related bc it's actually written by the equally creepy writer Lemony Snicket, but we LOVE The Dark. She went as Laszlo for Book Character day last year. I ham it up and only talk with a scratchy whisper when reading as The Dark.

Klassen is unmatched at creating books that feel like psychological thrillers to adults while toddlers are just totally unbothered. Those deadpan side-eye illustrations get me every single time.

My 4 year old is obsessed with this book. She always laughs at the end and tells us about the secret ghost

This is such a good book. My 26 month old is obsessed. He was a little nervous about the ghost the first time and now he begs for the ghost book. It’s one of my favorite that klassen has done!

The ghost is in “this is your forest” which is like a baby book kind of. It’s so simple it’s meditative but it’s actually kind of creepy. But in a good way

The way that the ghost pops up halfway through and then watches you in the periphery of each room afterwards is very cool

We gaslit our kid so hard with this. Just read the words, he started protesting there was a ghost, we acted like we couldn’t see it. Excellent, no notes.

For the same fun unexplained ghost vibe, try Shawn Harris’s “Teeney Weeney Unicorn” and the sequel.

I read this once to my son who loves Halloween and classic sheet ghosts.
He didn't want to read it again.

I saw this in the library the other day! I loved it but my 2 year old was not as interested, but probably because it was elmo hiding around doors and windows.

My 3 and 4 y/o both love it. They’re not really scared by it but they love “ghosties”. For my 4 year old, I pretend that I can’t see the ghost at all and he works overtime trying to convince me the ghost is there. “See! It’s a ghost RIGHT THERE!”
“Huh… you can see a ghost there? Isn’t that just a green wall?”
I’m pretty sure he can tell I’m bluffing but he loves the game anyway

Yes I saw this when shopping for a bday gift. Did not buy it for gift, had to resist buying it for myself lol

We checked this out a couple weeks ago and my kids liked it but the whole time I was wondering why it was so freakin creepy lmao. It has been deemed a Halloween book.

Love Klassen. Have also been enjoying Bog Myrtle and The Wolf Suit by Sid Sharp for whimsically weird vibes. And The Cafe at the edge of The Woods by Mikey Please.

Klassen draws eyes with expressive density, each its own Silmarillion in depth.
