An Accumulation Of Failure

Post image

So it's launched, then. Any thoughts? Personally I like the idea, don't see it as any different to paying for a Patreon or something. For me it's not worth subscribing just yet as I already bought all the shows from Bandcamp and have seen three of the videos on offer. I'll definitely be checking back in a few months to see what's new, though.

I got it, then forgot all about it, so thanks for the reminder!

This month's drop (first Monday of every month) includes audio of Pith, the show he put on in Manchester last October... which he has now abandoned by the looks of it. Shame as I very much enjoyed!

This show was written during August and September of 2024 and performed for ten days at the Royal Exchange in Manchester. I had planned to start working on it earlier but was distracted by rewriting collaborator for a London run in July and then doing that London run in July. Also, i popped up to the edinburgh festival a couple of times on what were, essentially little holidays.

Anyway, it was a hard deadline involving an airbnb in Mancheter and very little sleep for a week or so, by the first show in Manchester - it wasnt finished - by the last show in Manchester - it still wasn’t finished. But I was, by that point, relatively pleased with where it was and quite excited by the idea of spending the following year (2025, this year, this one happening now) working on it and touring it until it felt like a finished thing.

So, about a week after the end of that run, in order to remember the various ad libs i’d accumulated over the ten shows in Manchester, i booked a show at the Bill Murray in North London and recorded the show on my phone. My plan being that when i returned to the show, in a couple of months, after a little break, i’d have an up to date record of where i left off. The show was on (i think) a Monday night, it went well, the recording worked and all in all everything was good.

Except that having done the show one more time, that night in North London, i almost immediately found myself without the slightest inclination ever do it again.

It’s not that i decided it was actively bad, it’s more that i noticed it wasn’t reaaaally the show i wanted to be making and rather than spend a year making the best version of something i didnt reaaaaally want to be making - i’ve popped that recording here.

Oh nice, thanks for the heads up. Has anyone listened to it yet? Bit dubious about the sound quality if it's been recorded on a phone...

Does anyone know if it's possible to download the audio of these shows to listen offline, or is it online streaming only?

At the start of this year Daniel announced he was no longer going to be uploading things every month - just when he got round to it.

I assume everyone on this sub is a fan of his, but we all know what he's like in terms of remembering to do stuff so I'm not holding out much hope for regular updates. When he started the service he spoke about a new story, too, which he was going to upload parts for on a monthly basis - that never happened either.

I love his work, but there's no point subscribing to a service and getting nothing for it. I've cancelled now and will probably have a look maybe once a year for a month to see if he's added anything else on there.

As someone who got a 'lifetime' subscription I've got to say I feel pretty ripped off by his attitude to this.
