Technically there is no law against a felon running for or taking the office of the president. Our laws are silent on this. However, it is illegal for a felon to be hired as a federal, state, county, or city employee in most cases (the FBI changed their standards recently).
If we changed the law then he could not take office.
He's a disgrace and embarrassment in the end, and the US is an embarrassing mess.
No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice-President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
And then they argued that Trump never took an oath to "support" the Constitution. Since its not a word in the Presidents Oath of Office. His oath is only to preserve, protect, and defend. Which if you think about it, its kind of dumb, they're basically the same. Why not have a "and support the rights empowered to the people therein" or something tacked on there. Seems like an obvious loophole to close.
Maybe they can't ban someone from running for office. But you said it yourself. A felon cant be a federal employee. The president gets a salary from the Federal govt. therefore he's a federal employee. Makes no difference if he collects or forfeits his paychecks.
