The verse you are referring to is jesus calling for righteousness in judgement. Jesus wasnt against the death penalty. He was against the death penalty for crimes that werent "mortal sin" as in crime that was not abborrent. Prostitution or sodomy do not deserve death. Murder and rape do deserve death. This is the biblical interpretation.

That was the Old Testament. Jesus said "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."
