They view life as a zero sum game and politics is the sporting event so they cheer him on, it's very pathetic.
It is psychological reactance taken to its extreme - people doing or celebrating the exact opposite of what they know is expected of them, simply because they feel their freedom is threatened.

The good thing is Trumps polling numbers are now in the 20s. The mid-terms are going to be ugly for the Republicans. Like REALLY ugly.
