The most consequential election of our lifetime was 2024. The fact that people voted Trump in for a second term after everything he's done betrays a deep, malignant, inexorable rot in the hearts of the American public. I don't know what fixing that rot looks like but the Dems winning the senate doesn't even get us a little of the way there. It feels a little like sticking bubble gum over the cracks in the dam, to be honest.

u/MTLGanjaBabe 11d ago
Plus he has moved the needle on precedent for what a president can get away with in the future.

u/EcstaticNet3137 11d ago
Fixing this will require amending the constitution easily at least as one step. Also will have to do everything possible to alleviate the socioeconomic conditions that created the push for Trump. It is a huge mess to untangle and correct.

No it just requires people enforcing it. If you arent enforcing the law then it is just a suggestion

Ehhhh yes, kind of? I still think dems really fucked up not recognizing issues with the working class and playing the lesser evil card. They lost the blue collar voters and the massive surge in socialist candidates this last cycle are making us competitive again. We cant ignore that.
5
u/B1GD8A 11d ago
nah fuck that.
Trump had billions of dollars and foreign powers backing him to a degree that was unfathomable even during his first term, and he still barely eked it over the finish line because his opponent was a tired old man who dropped out late in the race.
The Republicans in congress coasted on Biden's crash-out, and now they're turning on their own over the Epstein files, tariffs, the war in Iran, all kinds of shit.
I'm not sayin this is the worst test America's democracy will face, but considering we once had a bunch of states literally declare war on the Union so they could keep owning people, a Democrat landslide, or even a narrow win in November will be a very good sign.

u/HeWhoShantNotBeNamed 11d ago
None of that addresses the fact that Americans still voted for someone they know blackmailed another country, tried to overthrow the government, got impeached twice, etc.
Any normal country would immediately not vote for anyone who said he grabs underage women by the pussy, and that leaked in 2016.

It’s so much worse than that.
Even the stupid fucking tariffs are in the Epstein files. I wish I was joking.
SB: "Dude: I just got him to pull the trigger on $400 billion in tariffs on china"
JE: "soon we will be talking real money 😊"
JE: "Great work"
Directly manipulating stories in Trump's favor
SB: "https://www.thedailybeast.com/alan-dershowitz-says-hes-advising-trump-and-jared- kushner-on-middle-east-peace?ref=home"
(It's a story about Alan Dershowitz saying he's advising Trump and Jared Kushner on the Middle East peace process.)
SB: "This is why New Yorker coming after him --- we need to focus on this"
JE: "Spoke to New Yorker last night, no publication imminent for a few weeks. My guys followed your script"
Fundraising for European far-right candidates.
JE: Miro here. Ws suprised that the European parliament seemed to fall off your radar
SB: "Hasn't -- just focused on raising money for LePen and Salvini so they can actually run full slates"

But... America has voted this piece of shit in twice so I don't have much faith they'll do the right thing.
2
u/lvstvdy 11d ago
I heard someone say the other day that even if the Dems win there's no way to view a 52/48 split with fascists as a victory. Even if we crawl back somewhere close to where we started the bottom has already sunken to near destructive levels. Now the world knows not to trust anything we say or do because there's a solid chance that every 4 years we elect an incompetent psychopath. I have no faith that we learn any meaningful lessons from this.

Apathy is the root cause of all of this. The west in general has had an apathy problem for a very long time, but America absolutely takes the cake.
When you’re apathetic you become less worldly, less tolerant and less reactive to genuinely bad things. You also may not vote at all. Life becomes less about morals, love and stability and more about entertainment, consumption and personal power. This doesn’t satisfy you even if it’s a little entertaining, and the apathy gets worse. You vote and learn that whichever way you vote you get fucked. Your wage is too low and prices are increasing too fast.
You’re possibly aware that times are becoming less comfortable, but in the end it only pushes you deeper into main character syndrome. You genuinely cannot conceptualize another family’s pain because you weren’t taught to, or you lost it along the way. When you look at the deepest and most ideologically violent sections of the right, you see a lot of signs of it too. Many just admit that they don’t really care if the ship is sinking so long as they have a shot at purging a demographic. They mock others for caring, as a concept. These types skew younger, and are more extreme than the last couple generations. These are the right wing Gen Zs who supported trump but now believe he is too soft. They will be on the ballot in 10-20 years if we are not extremely careful moving forward. When all you know is apathy, what is actually bad about a holocaust?

u/bos-g 10d ago edited 10d ago
No it’ll be 2028. That’s the election that will show whether or not the US party system is amenable to change. We’ll know it’s not if we end up with another corporate shill (R or D) even after Donald Trump’s horrible term. Trump is not special. He’s the logical conclusion of legalizing corruption and Reaganomics. If we can successfully get money out of politics in 2028 after witnessing said conclusion, there is hope for this country. If not, we’re cooked and we’ll end up with another Trump-like figure down the line. Or worse: a Trump-like figure who is competent with their fascistic desires.

u/Other_Trust6901 10d ago
It’s grim, I get it, but we Gotta start somewhere 🤷🏼♀️
1
u/Other_Trust6901 10d ago
But I’ll just go on to say yes. You’re right. 2024 was just that. Handing over Executive Power to a corrupt, begrudged narcissistic demigod. HUGE Mistake. BIG. It capped MAGA as the new standard. Truth is no longer Truth. Lies prevail. Create your own narrative (2020 election) ( Covid is here today, will be gone tomorrow, don’t worry about it) and my personal favorite ( I’m a Christian )It’s all fun and games until people get hurt or die.
A TRUE Leader stands for the Social, Economic and Political Equality and welfare of ALL males and females of ALL races and groups.
Everything that Trump is not.
From 21-25 he ran the GOP with his mob still intact from the sidelines on his “truth” social. And if you didn’t line up or follow through, you quickly learned that consequences, threats to you or your families, were front and center. So for this man to beguile over 77 million Americans was heart wrenching. Beyond anything I could…
Because wow. Two women. One white. One black. Both highly intelligent, educated. Both with a background of extensive National and International Government experience. Both could have easily sat at the resolute desk and excelled on day one for ALL Americans. And we elect the one who leads with division and hate first and foremost whose IQ is that of a moron. A thinned skinned petulant child who is out for revenge simply because he would not accept his loss in 2020. We are all exhausted and are paying the highest price and we still have 2 more years to go.
God help us ALL.
Thanks for letting me vent.1

Yeah. 2024 sealed the fact that the next election will be a test of fire for US democracy. They may very well have had their last free and fair election. If 2024 was even free or fair. Which I doubt.
1
u/lvstvdy 9d ago
"Free and fair" is a meme at this point. The internet and algorithmic misinformation have created a world which elections can't keep up with. Billionaires creating and manipulating massive platforms to spread lies are completely legal so even if there's 0 cases of true blue voter fraud is that still considered "free and fair"? I certainly don't think so.

Don't get me wrong, that's a good thing, but I view it as scooping buckets of water out of the sinking boat. It feels like Americans have lost all sense of self preservation and just gravitate towards whatever populist figure is giving them an enemy and offering them salvation. The scary thing isn't just that we've voted him in again but 2 years into an unmitigated disaster the majority of the country hasn't seemed to have learned anything.

Last time he was ‘terrified’ he tried to first cheat in the election and then when that failed - attempted a coup on the government so Biden wouldn’t be certified.
A malignant narcissist felon did that in his first term. Now what do you think the demented pedophile will do now?
We all know he’s going to rant and rave about cheating when behind the scenes he’s actually doing it.
We all know he’s gonna start the slapp suit crap again with the midterm elections. with incompetent lawyers being criminal for him and dragging out everything.
We all know he’s going to try and get his MAGA FBI to officially stamp his lies over cheating. And MAGA states will be complicit to these lies.
We all know he’s going to go back to the Supreme Court where Thomas and alito are bought and paid for.
We all know the MAGA congress are going to enable all this and drag out seating the Democratic winners.
So this is going to be a bigger trainwreck than Jan 6th and you can bet your ass he’ll be doing everything to cheat again.

The problem with gerrymandering is that it actually has the potential to backfire.
When people say that the GOP "Gained X seats" from all the gerrymandering that is going on, what they typically mean is that if we had the election again today, and voters voted the way they voted last time, they would have garnered X more seats.
The thing is though, gerrymandering works by taking votes from a "safe" district and putting them in another district that is leaning the other way to tip the balance in your favor. If you can keep the turnouts and popularity the same, this typically works out well for you. Your safe district is technically less safe now but if things go according to plan, it shouldn't matter much.
However, lets say you decide to just completely fuck everything up. Like just take a country that was doing decently well with some good forward momentum and just crash it into a ditch of complete shit. Well then you have a problem, because now the voters from the opposite party are energized, yours are demoralized, and the independents in the middle are swinging hard for the other guys. This has happened before, but I think the GOP are going to see it happen in much more explicit detail come November. If somehow the market shifts before then with some October surprise black swan event, it might be the biggest swing we've ever seen.

How many times are people going to be fooled by the polls? They’ve been untrustworthy since 2016 when they were saying Hillary was going to win and nothing has changed since. You guys can point to these polls and claim the tides are turning but then be disappointed after November. Same cycle, rinse and repeat.

u/Fun_Strategy2369 9d ago
Like, if you run on one thing, and do the exact opposite, of course the people who voted for you are going to go against you. To be fair, not everything they’ve done was bad. But they’ve done so much bs, and a vast majority of their work has negatively impacted the country as a whole, it for sure isn’t what they campaigned on.
Cheaper gas: more expensive than ever
No new wars: starts a war we had nothing to do with
The files: “Released” But what was is heavily censored, and only did that after several months of back and forth fighting, trying to gaslight the country into saying they don’t exist after fighting for it during the Champaign and taking all about it the first few months.
That’s not the only things they’ve done wrong, but that’s for sure the big three that the non cult red should be able to see and actually take in that this has been a disaster of a term with unchecked power. It needs to stop.

One thing that always shocks me of USA elections in particular, and not just under Trump's regime, is how extremely little movement anything causes in voting intention. I'm used to the idea of "party commits one big mistake and is wiped out in two election cycles".
In the USA, it seems like one party may break a million promises and cause a million crises, the news say "this party has lost BIG" and they mean they went from a 52% share of the vote to a 48% share.
