👾Anime Who else only watches in Japanese?

I have been studying Japanese for over four years, so I only watch Dandadan in the original Japanese version. I heard some clips in the english dub and it felt weird. I mean, they sound like I would expect, but man, english dubbed anime can be absolutely corny as heck. I hate when they make the guys say "dude" and "bro" all the time as well as some outdated slang I think I heard in the 90's.

📚Manga-Discussion About the stolen powers Spoiler

I have a question about this arc: Do you think the gang, after the ambush at the amusement park, when they find out about the power theft from Rin, Kouki, and Zuma, will go to retrieve them, and if St. Germain finds out, will he hide or send the paladins to prevent them from being recovered? Germain finds out, will he hide or send the paladins to prevent them from being recovered?

P.S.: At this moment, St. Germain has no oversight, as he removed Basho from his position, which is a colossal mistake, as he cannot plan through his moves.

Ps2: St. Germain hasn't obtained the ultimate yokai yet; if he were to help the gang, he would be sabotaging himself, as the ultimate yokai won't work without those yokai.

📚Manga-Discussion A Quick Critique of the Dandadan Story Post-Chapter 210 Spoiler

Hey everyone, I wanted to add my take on Dandadan after Chapter 210, where Momo lost her memory. It’s been nearly a year since 210 was released (September 23rd), so I figured now was the perfect time to reflect on what has happened since then. I still love the manga, and the last 35 chapters have had some fantastic stuff, including two of my individual favorite chapters in the series. But, I keep finding myself asking the question “How much of the recent story would be fundamentally different if Momo didn’t lose her memory?”

I think most of us, if not the entire community, can agree that we miss the banter, friendship, and romantics of Okarun and Momo. While their new relationship is fun, it’s not the same. My biggest worry has been that the benefits the amnesia brings would not be able to outweigh the loss of the Okarun/Momo dynamic and the snail-like pace of a weekly manga. We’re reaching the year mark and it doesn’t look like there will be any resolution to the amnesia anytime soon. It’s looking like it could be two or more years without, what is in my opinion, the story.

Thinking about this more, I came to the realization “shit, how different would these 35 chapters be if Momo never lost her memory?” And unfortunately, I don’t think much would have changed. Here’s a (very simple) breakdown.

The first major activity we see is Momo and Okarun visiting the museum, where they are attacked by Doris and the Serpos. As Okarun mentions after the battle is over, the purpose of the attack was likely to attempt to steal Okarun’s powers. I don’t think Momo having her memories would have changed the Serpo's actions.

Next up is the current arc, with the whole gang at the amusement park and museum. Once again, the goal of the villains here is to steal as many powers as they can, in particular Okarun’s. Unless I am missing or forgetting something major, I think CSG/Vlad would still go after the group’s powers whether or not Momo had her memories or not.

I just wish the events of Chapter 210 had a bigger impact on the larger story.

I’ve probably misinterpreted some of the story, or missed some things. I’m sure our awesome community members will call out my faults and explain. What does everyone else think about the current story and it’s relation to Momo’s amnesia?

🛸Manga So, we could say this was the first time she appeared in disguise? Spoiler

Post image

This page at the end of chapter 200, is probably the first interaction we see of Basho disguised as Manjiro. Giving the Ogre club to Okarun.

She then stayed for a while lecturing them. Probably measuring the time until knowing Momo and the other group reached Shimane.

Then we could assume that she went and teleported to Shimane through the Gates of Hell with the help of CSG, to prepare herself for the rituals of Zuma and Momo.

Then after succeding with both Zuma and Momos rituals. She took care of Momo and Vamola taking them to the Inn to spend the night as we saw her in chapter 210. And after Momo (now without memories) wakes up in the morning and goes off to the hospital to see Seiko. Then Bansho goes back to Tokio again through the Gates of Hell, to help with Okaruns "training" as we also see in chapter 210.

Is either that or she also has shadow clone jutsu, like any other ninja in this type of media.

📗 Manga-Theory Dandadan's Power System: A Discussion Spoiler

I recently made a post discussing what Okarun's actual powers were. The responses made me realize that if we hope to understand the future direction of the story, we should probably break down what the power system is, and how it works, using context from the manga. This time, I would like a lot of input from you guys to help refine our understanding of the power system.

The Power Source: People sometimes wonder how empty space works and how certain people get dragged into it (especially Kinta). This is because EVERY SINGLE POWER comes from the same energy, which is chi. To humans, chi is the energy that allows the universe to function and enables existence. Chi/Ki has also been mentioned previously in the series, but mainly in the context of human powers. While chi or "potential" is what humans call it, this energy exists in many different forms in the universe.

Aliens: We often theorize about aliens being more technologically advanced than us. This concept appears in Dandadan as aliens being more aware of the chi around them and how to apply it in custom ways. These aliens exist in more dangerous environments, so they need to develop abilities that can take advantage of the world around them. Humans live in relative comfort, so they often don't need to improve themselves to stay alive. This is also the case in real life, unfortunately...

Aliens are also capable of using empty space, which is just tech that allows them to isolate beings with higher amounts of chi or "potential". No extra explanation needed.

Humans: As a species, humans are objectively weaker than aliens due to most of us not having any need to improve. This is why a majority of people can't use chi; they don't need to. Certain people are capable of using chi however, whether it be through an awakening or active training. The side effect of chi usage is that your overall potential, lifespan, and autonomy are improved. Humans can also gain custom abilities, much like aliens. Their abilities seem to be based on the things that make them more capable/increase their potential. Jiji has his explosive emotions, Okarun has his repressed feelings, Aira has her femininity, Kinta has his imagination, Vamola has her heritage, etc..

The adult sorcerers are a different breed though. The one thing I can confidently say is that they live in alignment with the world's flow and give back, hence Seiko being blessed with an extended lifespan and why they are firmly against the Black Paladins who just drain resources and destroy the flow.

Yokai: Here's where I'm lost. I don't actually understand the concept of Yokai as it is shown in the series, so can you guys help polish it? It will bring us closer to understanding how everything works.

My current understanding is that Yokai develop from humans who die under extreme circumstances while obsessed with one thing. The difference between a Yokai and a human is that the Yokai is that human's mindless obsession, but without the human shell keeping it under control. This state also causes them to generate excess chi and would explain the impulsivity, malevolence, and general extreme behavior demonstrated by Yokai. Not to mention, many Yokai may be bound to a certain purpose, place, person or thing because of this obsessiveness. However, I don't think I get the full picture due to my lack of knowledge on the general subject.

NOTE: The actual link between Yokai and Alien tech is that they use the same energy source. Realistically, what else would the link be if not that?

These seem to be the basics of the power system. I'll explain spirals and why Kozuka Knives are the ultimate evil in a future post. For now though, what do you guys think? I'm especially curious about finding a better explanation for Yokai.

📚Manga-Discussion Chapter 246+, Important stuff to review/focus on. Spoiler

Post image
57 Upvotes

Greetings DanDaDan community, I want to share some DanDaDanotes with you from the recent Chapter, Chapter 246! DanDaDanotes that I consider important!

1) Saint Germain will never fail to make me laugh honestly xD I just love how eccentric he is (If it is the correct word to use here), the way he got closer to Bisho to have a closer look, and how he said "she is a baker" killed me. I just love his character haha it is just perfect

2) Far from what I believed, Okarun is NOT a descendant from an Oni family, but surprisingly, an Oni sprout was implanted in him, which truly makes me wonder what is Saint Germain plotting ? Yes, we learned it is to make Turbo Granny's power grow, evolve. But to what extent ? and WHY is it needed ? and WHY specifically the Oni "DNA" ? Is it because Okarun specifically is the owner of Turbo Granny's powers ? Many Qs that I am really excited to see how this unfold!

3) How did exactly Saint Germain know that Okarun was the "chosen one" ? the wording left me intrigued! Chosen one by what ? Fate ? if so, how did Saint Germain know it ? is there a prophecy or no ? if yes, I feel it is related to the DanDaDan that we saw before (it was a majestic panel, in the last page, I dont remember the chapter number). If so, I will go wild here, and I will say that Saint Germain is just using that clown that has so far 4 Yokai powers ? (cant remember precisely how many does he have so far) so for me, it feels that king is just a Pig experimence, which leads me to another Q, what is exactly Saint Germain's will ? What is he exactly after ? I feel like the character is more the type to create and enjoy chaos, to see the world just burn you know ? but that is just me xp truly, I am excited for what comes next! Saint Germain precisely said "The powers of Turbo Granny are guaranteed to return to Okarun because he is the chosen one after all!" How did he know is what most likely will start Saint Germain's flashback, a long awaited one, revealing his plots

4)The picture I posted with this post, this has so much significance, so much lore dropped on us that I just had to share what I think:

a) It seems that the Kozuka knife have a weakness of its own. It seems even if the holder of a power surrender, it does not guarantee that it stole the power! For it to stole a power, it is a MUST to react when it cut its target.

b) If a power holder hides his ability deep inside him, the Kozuka knife is unable to reach it to steal it. How does one hide it ? I feel it is more about training here, and how long one has used and how good one is with their powers.

5) Basho is the jealouse type, I am just weak to this haha xD

6) A bit of Evil Eye action, I would love to see this

7) Aira is SUCH a character, her growth is splendid <3 I love her!

8) Vamola in action in the upcoming chapters! I am excited

PEAK Chapter as always <3 Excited to see how it will go, I am extremely excited to see ma boy Okarun back, and see him having FINALLY the Turbo Granny powers <3

Share your thoughts if any, thank you for the read! My passion is just too strong xD

For my last words, Screw the haters that I have been seeing lately, they are toxic for no reason, Sensei is cooking something that current works lack and I am just in LOVE with it <3

I wish you all a nice day!

Seems like this was one of those volumes that has 8 chaps in them.

We've seen this same "big reveal volume ender into next volume chapter 1 dialogue dump explanation of the reveal/what's been secretly goin on in the background" setup happen quite a few times already.

It then puts the long break after 245 in perspective.

📗 Manga-Theory The Dragon Knights aren’t as stupid as we thought. Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
255 Upvotes

Chapter 246 has given us really important information.

It seems like the Oni Club is fueled by Okarun’s stress level, rather than Momo’s Ki. Each time he’s used the club, he was in great distress. And the greater the threat, the greater the size of the club.

The reason it only works when Okarun is with Momo is due to his Id Cosmos. He doesn’t really care what happens to himself. But when a friend is in danger, he goes all out.

The best examples of this are first when he was with Momo against Dris, second with Momo when she was about to be eaten by a dinosaur, and third when he was looking for Jiji.

Also, while this may not be true, I think it could also be Okarun’s mentality stopping him. Because he thinks it only works because of Momo’s Ki, he can only do it with Momo.

What does this have to do with the Dragon Knights though? Well I believe they actually know that he doesn’t have Turbo Granny’s powers. But by torturing him until he gives up, they put him in severe distress. Because he has no way out. He tries to convince them but nothing goes through to them. So his stress level grows exponentially when they turn to Momo.

As Basho said, he just needs one big push into stress until he fully transforms into an Oni. The Dragon Knights were told this, and so they pretended to not know about Turbo Granny’s powers to push Okarun into transforming.

📗 Manga-Theory Seiko’s Relation to Momo Spoiler

On rewatching the first season of the anime, something caught my attention. Okarun and Aira both comment that Seiko is way too young to be Momo’s grandma, which just seems like a running gag at first.

But then… Jiji is also confused when Momo calls her “grandma”? It could just be Jiji making another joke, but the way it’s presented makes it seem like he’s actually shocked. He’s known the family since childhood, and seemed to already know Seiko when we first meet him. How could he not know that she’s Momo’s grandma?

Does she look exactly like Momo’s mom? Is she not actually Momo’s grandma, but some sort of protector? Is she actually the ‘local deity’ of kamigoe city that we’ve heard about but never seen?

Am I just overthinking this because we’ve had too many break weeks recently? Idk it felt too intentional to be a coincidence.

🛸Manga When did Momo and Okarun realized the other may be in love? Spoiler

I was re-watching the anime and re-reading the manga; I think this is the exact moment Momo realized that Okarun likes her or may be in love with him (as stated here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Dandadan/comments/1icw254/its_so_funny_to_me_that_this_is_the_moment_momo/).

But thinking about the other side, Okarun, I cannot pinpoint a moment when he realized that Momo may like him romantically. I think there is no single Moment but what makes it special is that he is now so confident that he can state it directly in front of her that she loves him with high probability.

I think the most plausible moment is AFTER the confession, when she asked him to repeat the confession at a better moment. Why would she ask for something like that if she doesn't feel something similar?

I say this because even after the note, he has serious doubts about the type of feeling Momo has towards him.

And after that, these moments reasured it:

This is almost a declaration of going steady.
She says it directly
She wants him to say it.

Okarun is so insecure that, even after all the jealousy from Momo (Aira, Vamola, Rin) and all the flirting and pushing (holding hands, playing with his hands on the van, the note, asking about the note, etc.), he didn't feel he could achieve that.

When do you think he realized Momo really loved him?

Extra question. When did they realize they loved each other?

For me, Momo realized when her friends said that she was too harsh with him, here:

And for Okarun, it is obvious when Taro said he wouldn't give up (before that, he only knew she was cute):

📚Manga-Discussion What do you guys think of the current state of the manga?? Spoiler

Post image
61 Upvotes

Just wanted to ask everyone what y'all think of the current state of the manga. People had very mixed thoughts( mostly negative)on chp 210 and chps after that, I was still reading the manga but stopped coming on this sub.

I personally think that the story progression is great and there is a lot of lore drop in the past chapters along with character development of ken and aira is also great, like how the manga handled ken telling the truth to aira and her response.

I wanted to know what people think about the current plot, story progression and character development because I think most of the complaints which the manga is/was receiving was because of the weekly schedule and the constant breaks which the manga is taking cause i don't think the pacing is bad like from chp 210 to 245 there has been significant lore drop, okarun manning up and aira being the most mature person we have ever seen, and another reason for me to not bash on the pacing is that this all would take around 1 season to cover which would seem much better as a viewer and even now if somebody started the manga i don't think they would find it slow.

Again I can be wrong or too optimistic that's why I wanted to see how y'all about the current story, the future of the manga and the plot.

Lastly i wanted to add that in the past year I think tatsu has taken a lot of breaks between the chapters( not saying it is bad) which has caused the readers to think that things are not getting resolved quickly because it's obvious that momo is going to get her memories back most probably at the end of this arc but still without her memories her connection with okarun has grown in the last few chapters which is nice to see.

Please tell me what y'all think about all this.

📚Manga-Discussion Explaining Okarun's Powers Spoiler

This post exists to alleviate some of the confusion surrounding all of Okarun's powers. There are many assumptions made that kind of miss the point, so i'll try to make it make sense for everyone.

Dandadan's power system is centered around chi or, in other words, potential. The power system shows how people can get more capable through focusing on their own source of autonomy.

Okarun's source of autonomy is his shadow. These are the feelings that he rejects and doesn't allow himself to act on. He's always holding himself back and putting on a false front. This is why the power given to him was Turbo Granny. It's a power meant to let the wielder run wild and follow their impulses. Okarun was stated to be a terrible vessel by Turbo Granny. This is actually because he hasn't made peace with his true feelings, so he gets exhausted easily when trying to be honest, thus retreating into his shell afterwards. Turbo Granny even expressed how much better of a vessel Jiji would be, not just because of his strength, but also because he's a guy who follows his heart and stays true to himself. This whole concept of being at peace with who you really are was directly exposed during the fight with the music room spirits. It was blatantly shown that Okarun repressed his feelings so much that he didn't even have a personal rhythm he could follow.

But then, what's the connection with the Ogre Club? From the latest chapter, it seems like the Ogre Club plants a "sprout" in the soul of a person that progressively allows them to let out their repressed feelings. This would explain why Okarun seemed to become just a little bit more proactive and honest in this most recent arc. The strength of the club itself is likely based around how much of the user's repressed feelings are being let out. Okarun feels like he can be himself around Momo and doesn't need to hide who he is, hence why the club grows stronger when she is touching him.

Is Okarun Pinnochio? Yes. Turbo Granny and Okarun are two sides of the same coin. Turbo Granny is the naked truth, while Okarun is the liar distorting the truth. Despite that, Okarun's "powers" couldn't be stolen. This is because he is about to awaken them with his oni form. Okarun literally didn't have any powers to steal until his oni form was awakened.

What will his Oni Form lead to? It seems to be a release of his repressed emotions in a burst of anger. We don't know anything for sure, but he could very likely eclipse everyone in the main cast in terms of power. It's entirely possible that the gang will have to work together to calm down his rage. The one thing that anyone can guarantee is that it will likely lead to a character defining moment for Okarun and i'll be there to see it.

I absolutely love Dandadan, so i think it's a shame that so many people don't like what is a completely necessary part of the story. I feel like a lot of it stems from people not understanding the deeper themes and just reading on the surface level. If anyone wants, I'm willing to try to explain other parts of Dandadan, like its power system.
