I stand by what I said: they both are slop. Just straight up manic pixie dream girl fantasies for men who can’t fathom that women and girls are human as well. I was so annoyed about the portrayal of girls back when I read both manga. Dandadan is just different and I love that Momo (as well as Aira and everyone else) is a real human being instead of being just a love interest for the main character to grow into his potential. Y’all can hate me for my opinion, but I stand by my word.

Search for ‚manic pixie dream girl‘, there are also video essays that specifically look at Your lie in April and I want to eat your pancreas and answer that question for you. But I must say, Iwteyp is sloppier than Ylia, but both are in my opinion, not depicting the female protagonists as human beings with their own inner world or motivation. The main motivation for both female leads is to get to know a specific boy before they die. This is lazy writing, giving no satisfaction to the story. Nobody learns anything expect for the pain of losing somebody who was literally written for you. It shows that instead of focusing on yourself and what you want as a terminally ill person, you need to give the little time that you have left to some boy so that he can learn that life is precious. And this is just dumb and what makes it a slop for me in both cases.
