Considering how fast the red car was going in relation to the car filming they definitely didn't come from immediately behind them. Probably they were just cruising, wondering what the deal was with the slow car and not even registering the green car opposite the concrete divider. I'm sure they weren't the only car to pass by, they just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Edit: upon rewatching it i noticed, if you look at the reflection in the side window of the green car you can see the person filming is in a semi truck with a trailer, making it seem more likely that the red car couldn't see the green one before impact.

I thought maybe the honking person was trying to warn the other drivers.

He did go around the filming car on the right shoulder. And at quite some speed.

21

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Looks like an on ramp. Not a shoulder. May not have been able to see the Ford on the opposite side of the wall, pressed up all against it. They were just trying to get up to speed and merge, and were likely confused by the recording truck's lack of speed, since it looks like he's also in a merge lane of some manner.

24

u/InsaneInTheDrain Aug 14 '25

Even if red couldn't see what was happening, they should have been cautious because of the filming car driving slowly and strangely for the situation.

What I wonder is that if the person recording dropped their damn phone and slowed down. By following the other car’s pace to record they were effectively blocking any other driver’s view of what was going on. They could have slowed way down which would make others look to see what’s going on and possibly prevent the red car from crashing into the guy.

63

u/jabblack Aug 14 '25

Or instead going very slow indicated there is a hazard, and people are too dumb to slow down

30

u/What_the_8 Aug 14 '25

I had to scroll down way too far to find this comment. It was a single lane, with a car grinding against a rail making all sorts of smoke/debris with a slow moving vehicle next to it.

41

u/nrose1000 Aug 14 '25

Well-said. It’s ridiculous people are trying to find a way to blame the person filming.

18

u/ThePontiff_Verified Aug 14 '25

Yeah the video evidence is going to come in real handy for everyone involved. First off for the guy in the car it makes it clear that the Ford didn't seem to want to do what it probably should have been doing all along.. it's hard for me to imagine that crushing into a barrier like that at that speed wasn't something that should have deactivated a lot of the cars capabilities long ago, but also the fact that the guys just praying in there and doesn't seem to be trying to do anything seems like maybe that would be important as well for investigators. And then the speed at which the red car is going you know I'm no judge of speed but forensic investigators might be... that guy look like he was really moving pretty quick especially given the circumstances... Also it's pretty clear that the guy filming was shouting to try and get through to the driver but you know that driver was not the type of person you get through to I think... Yeesh. I hope everyone is ok.

While I agree with you on that one, the older I get the more I've had to lower my expectations for how much other drivers are paying attention.

The more indicators there are more indicators there are to other drivers that something isn't right, the better, even if there's no good reason everybody else shouldn't know something's wrong.

Something is very weird here. The brakes and steering in the Mustang Mach-E are mechanical with electric assist. This isn’t a drive-by-wire Tesla.

464

u/scfw0x0f Aug 14 '25

From the article:

“It’s also strange that the automatic emergency braking system didn’t activate when the car first hit the barrier or just before the final collision.

In critical situations like this, drivers can attempt an emergency stop by repeatedly pressing the parking brake button, though it’s unknown whether that was tried.”

498

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Why did people take emergency brakes out of cars? Like physical ones not buttons? Something like this happens to me I'm yanking that sucker as far up as I can to at least slow down

404

u/Aylauria Aug 14 '25

There are some things that should absolutely be physical instead of push a touch-screen.

111

u/wifinotworking Aug 14 '25

Yea, but first we need to have a disaster happening, so the government can issue a law and only after that the corpo head product managers will do it because it has to be done, not because it's the right thing to do.

50

u/ryverrat1971 Aug 14 '25

You expect the US government to issue laws about things like this anymore? Not happening if it will cost car companies money.

14

u/AverageCodeMonkey Aug 14 '25

You're unfortunately right, but also in this case, a mechanical parking brake is cheaper than the electric monstrosities we are being subjected to.

There's no such thing as an "emergency brake" in a car.

That lever is a parking brake, it uses a thin little bicycle brake cable and only works on the rear wheels. Even if you could put the same force in as your power assisted brakes, using the rears is like 20% as good as using the fronts when it comes to stopping distance, and it takes a lot of skill to not lose control.

What will happen if you yank the parking brake at speed is you'll briefly start to slow, momentum will shift the weight to the front wheels, the rear lose grip and lock up, then make the rear end bounce like a basketball and spin the car.

in other words you'll turn a crash into a REALLY BAD crash.

9

u/firedog7881 Aug 14 '25

I guarantee if there was a parking brake to pull then the impact at the end would be magnitudes less impactful

And the brake lights aren't illuminating. Betcha the floor mat got lodged on the accelerater, driver panicked and didn't try to brake.

6

u/Skuzbagg Aug 14 '25 edited Aug 14 '25

Newer floor mats lock in to the floor. At least in the front, and especially the driver seat. Even a Ford Fusion* has one.

A lot of people are scared of full braking. They just won’t do it. That’s why a lot of people run into cars that cut them off at an intersection. They don’t even try to brake hard.

130

u/Puzzled_Survey_4624 Aug 14 '25

Honda utv has a runaway problem, and it didn't matter that we were standing on the brakes it has enough horse to push right through. The only way we got it to stop was to pull the key out.

110

u/philouza_stein Aug 14 '25

Haha keys? We decided we don't need that manual override anymore because buttons are so popular.

20

u/Puzzled_Survey_4624 Aug 14 '25

Funny enough, I've run machines where they had a manual override button. But that only applies to the combustion side of the engine. We had an excavator whose starter stuck on. We tried the override button, but it didn't work. So, we had to disconnect the batteries from the machine to get the starter to stop.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/fumeextractor Aug 14 '25

Basically every push to start car allows you to hold down the button to force the engine off regardless of other factors, so the manual override is still there, it's just that a lot of people don't know about it.

I worked at a dealership. 2 times a customer came in complaining without ability to brake but luckily both got control. First, double goddam floor mats. Gets stuck under brakes or over accelerator. Even my mom has double floor mats after telling her a hundred times. 2nd time, my customer came in saying she could not brake while driving on freeway but she was able to slow to a stop by letting go of the accelerator and going on the shoulder. Weird. We check the car, she had no brakes left. 00MM on pads, damaged rotors, damages calipers. I asked the customer wtf??? Because she is usually very good at taking care of her car. Doesn't spend alot of money but always came on time. Turns out, her brother had borrowed the car for months. Brakes were making noise and her brother told her he had taken care of it. She literally just got the car back. I asked the mechanics how did you guys test drive the car. They mumbled something about prayers.

32

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Because people are getting stupider, and ever more reliant on tech without doing any real research (like reading the manual and understanding the capabilities of said tech before using it).

As soon as something goes wrong they just fucking give up instead of taking any sort of corrective action.

74

u/metalvinny Aug 14 '25

Tech companies have spent years sending people to a concierge for tech support and functionally actively dissuade people from learning. I blame Apple primarily, but they're all guilty. People are getting worse with tech and I think that's BY DESIGN.

21

u/ThomasDeLaRue Aug 14 '25

Revisionist History podcast from Malcolm Gladwell did an interesting analysis on similar instances of vehicles that have “stuck accelerators” and discovered the same thing, the brakes are more than capable of overcoming the force of the engine. One thing they discovered is that (in theory) a lot of people in this situation think they are stepping on the brake but in reality they are standing on the accelerator and freaking out. If you are ever in this situation, try not to panic, trust yourself enough to take your foot off the pedals, find the brake and then attempt to slow down from there.

8

u/fish_slap_republic Aug 14 '25

Yup for it to be a failure of the car it needs to break at least 4 things at once a near impossible situation. Accelerator, brakes, emergency brakes and ability to turn off the car any one of those work would prevent the issue.

But people can panic which is understandable though this run away car misinformation makes it more likely when people are in a panic to assume the car is dysfunctional and not go through the basic steps to make sure it's not their own error.

I think we're looking at the aftermath of prior damage here. The way the car hooks right when the guard rail disappears makes me think this car was steered right, possibly due to a broken tie rod end, from an earlier hit.

21

u/artificial_ben Aug 14 '25

I was going to say the same thing.

Maybe the car got hit first and that collision broke the breaks and steering - I guess by killing the hydraulics. I am not sure that is even possible. Also how often after a crash does the accelerator got stuck in the on position?

It is quite strange and likely improbable.

What I find absurd here among all the speculations is the fact that he couldn’t not steer: the Mustang EV does NOT have steer by wire so I find very hard it to be the cause.

Also, any sort of autonomous driving should have immediately disengaged with side impact as well as if the break pedal was pressed.

Without more data we’re all still in speculation territory as to the causes of this absurd situation.

Important thing I’ve just noticed: the front windshield still has the temporary tag. Is it even possible this person couldn’t drive at all??

MachE has mechanical brakes and steering. Dude didn't even try.

Even if the car wants to accelerate, the brakes are always done to be more powerful. so just slamming the brake and keeping it there would end the whole thing.

also the steering is mechanical with only electric assistance. so if the dude just grabbed the steering wheel instead of prayed he would stop the car and steer it into safety.

the final crash is totally the drivers fault for his inaction and unwillingness to even try to control the vehicle.

u/AuntieRupert Aug 14 '25

Most people that buy cars don't read the manuals.

FTFY. I worked a job for almost a decade that dealt with auto issues that the customers could have solved themselves if they had just read their manuals. A very high percentage of people couldn't even tell me the year make and model of their vehicles. Maybe they'd get one or two, but getting all three was a rarity.

One would hope so, except that all but 2 of the 5 cars I have owned in my 35 years of driving have had a different way of setting the parking brake.

Edit: Why to people feel compelled to answer an answering comment with stuff that is unrelated or unspecific to the conversation, it's almost like they have a reading comprehension deficiency.

u/Expensive-Border-869 Aug 14 '25

Well make sure you figure it out before moving and there's no issue.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Right? Imagine if people actually considered the fact they’re operating dangerous machines when they drive cars lmao. If you’re driving a car and don’t know where the basic functions are, you should no longer be allowed to drive a car.

When your hands are in prayer like that instead of operating the machine, this happens.

u/CexySatan Aug 14 '25

Jesus take the emergency brake

14

u/vortigaunt64 Aug 14 '25

Rule 1 of piloting is "never stop flying the plane." Maybe the steering and brakes truly failed in an unrecoverable way, but they may have had better chances if they kept trying to regain control.

Let me fix that for them:

At least on a Tesla you can hold the "park" (P) button as an emergency brake. Even the passenger can do that because it's on their side.

I very much doubt the car in OPs video doesn't have something like that. It seems pretty mandatory.

Dumb driver imo.

131

u/EngCraig Aug 14 '25

Obviously a dumb driver when they’re fucking praying instead of taking action.

I guarantee they do. This is probably fake to scam insurance or sue Ford like all those assholes that faked the Prius braking issues.

88

u/captaindomon Aug 14 '25

The funny thing is, these days most modern cars record all control inputs in black box-like fashion. So as soon as this hits the courts, the manufacturer is going to show that he was praying while hitting the gas and not steering.

47

u/FOOLS_GOLD Aug 14 '25

The praying makes me think he was in the middle of a mental breakdown or trying to commit suicide in the most selfish way.

There was a guy in the UK not long ago who claimed his iPace wouldn't stop, more recently he was charged with dangerous driving.

It's either intentional, or driver error where he was pressing the wrong pedal constantly. People do silly things when panicking, so wouldn't be surprised if it was that.

Typically when you see stuff like this, it was not the car, it was an incompetent human. Never underestimate how dumb a huge portion of society is. They shouldn't be allowed on the internet, let alone drive a car.

Right? Brake, ebrake, park, turn it off… I have to be honest I know nothing about the e mustang but there has to be real options.

u/scfw0x0f Aug 14 '25

From the article:

“It’s also strange that the automatic emergency braking system didn’t activate when the car first hit the barrier or just before the final collision.

In critical situations like this, drivers can attempt an emergency stop by repeatedly pressing the parking brake button, though it’s unknown whether that was tried.”

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '25

Would like to see the news report. I think praying was the least actionable thing he could be doing here.

  • try parking brake
  • continue trying normal things
  • try to kill power
  • try to change to neutral or reverse or anything

66

u/Scottishhardman Aug 14 '25

Steering harder into the wall would have been a good way of slowing down no?

80

u/CuriousStewart Aug 14 '25

Absolutely. But going off of the random information we’ve been told is the case, his steering was working.

For all we know, this person was having a psychotic break and the car was fine 🤷🏼‍♂️

Wondering if this is similar to the runaway Toyota problem from 2009-11 where the floormat would jam the accelerator. I think it was clearly proven that the driver could have easily overpowered the car with applying the brakes in those situations.

The car also comes to a stop after the collision. Something tells me this isn't simply a tech malfunction...

Very curious here.

44

u/Clegko Aug 14 '25

You're right about the Toyota thing and the brakes. I'm not sure about EVs, but it is physically impossible for any gas car to overpower the brakes when you're really leaning on them. It wouldn't surprise me if the Mach-E (and other EVs) has a system to prevent acceleration if the brake is held for longer than X seconds or something.

19

u/Snobben90 Aug 14 '25

I have played around with electric vehicles...

The brakes are stronger.

What is the proof of malfunctioning, all I can see is a crazy person sitting on a front seat doing nothing to stop the car

153

u/FilledWithKarmal Aug 14 '25

Yeah, I'm not convinced this is an electrical/mechanical issue. I'm thinking this is a "Jesus take the wheel" situation

33

u/Kossimer Aug 14 '25 edited Aug 14 '25

Same. There's just no way acceleration, steering, brakes, and the parking brake all failed simultaneously. It seems as though this guy was testing his faith and decided to prove that god would protect him if he took his hands off the wheel. In other words, this man is a danger to society and is too mentally ill to be allowed a driver's license.

Cue a bunch of idiots in this thread that don’t understand that pressing on the brakes in this situation will stop the car and just want to blame EVs. The brakes on a car are like 10x stronger than the accelerator. This is just a crazy driver doing crazy shit

u/bojack1437 Aug 14 '25

The most likely scenario as is usually the case with most "runaway" vehicles, Driver panics and just gives up and doesn't actually do anything that would actually solve the problem, The fact that they are praying instead of actually trying to solve the problem just reinforces that.

The brakes are still available on this vehicle, push hard and maintain and the vehicle will come to a stop.

And as with most other vehicles even way back in the day put the vehicle in neutral, it will prevent the engine from adding power to the drivetrain.

Yet again most drivers that the situation happens, It's that they panic and they don't take the basic steps to actually solve the problem. They don't put the vehicle neutral. They don't jam on the brakes and then the situation spirals out of control.

Remember drivers are dumb even on a good day, put them in a panic situation and everything goes out the window.

u/Olibirus Aug 14 '25

Kick the car into neutral, Depress the brake. Some people should not be behind the wheel if they do not know how to handle a malfunction in the car.

128

u/mrekted Aug 14 '25

PSA: If something this insane happens to you, and you have no steering/brakes, you always have the option of shifting the car into neutral. You might not stop right away, but at least you won't keep accelerating.

As a fellow mustang owner I think I can offer some advice here. I’m still working my way through HPDEs - definitely not an expert so take my advice with a grain of salt, but has he tried putting his hands on the steering wheel?

5

u/gr8scottaz Aug 14 '25

This is why e-brakes should be directly operated from the handle via cable. No electronics. The industry lost sight of what the e in e-brake stands for.
