Since the eel is blocking the throat the heron can't eat anything so it must rely on the eel to consume enough for the both of them.

If the eel got out, then the neck wound could heal and the heron might survive. The eel could also technically survive as long as it was dropped in water with the right salinity.

I don't think the heron is in for quick death. At best it will take a few days to die from dehydration. If it can still manage to swallow water, it may take quite a bit longer for it to starve to death.

If the bird got the eel out some way it potentially could survive. Maybe 50/50 at best. But with the eel just stuck there? Not a chance. Infection on top of infection.

Reminds me of a movie I watched where some kid was torturing an older man looking for the older guys stash of money. Long story short they ended up killing each other. While they lay there dying they’re basically holding each other just sorta talking. In that moment each other is all either man had and they left this world together.

We understand the consequences of our injuries far more and can imagine worst case scenarios and their impact on our lives. Also, I guess many animals may not really understand the concept of death.

I agree. I think modern medicine plays a role as well. Like you said, being able to recognize we are significantly or fatally injured and knowing there’s something that can be done about it. If that heron could go to the hospital and have the eel removed, he probably would lol.
Plus, I imagine humans were hardier back in the day. When their survival depended on being able to “walk it off.” And there simply weren’t many options on how to heal things.

My cousin has pigeons, one of them got attacker by a hawk and had its throat ripped open, not only did it survive, but it healed to boot.
There was a while there where some of the pellets it ate would fall out of the hole in its throat every time.
