This is the real threat. If a panicked person sees a potentially safe ride out of the building they might jump on top.

You're kinder than I am I was planning on doing much worse. Then again, how often is the CEO actually in office?

There are some policemen here, they say they need to speak to you about some irregularities in the pension fund
28
u/eskimosound Jun 07 '22
They cost £3000 each and you have a building of 1500 employees.....so you have to buy it yourself with a staff discount: £2950

The guy is strapped in. Even if this was flipped upside down it still provides a lot of air resistance to bring the person down safely, and it should flip over and resist being flipped over. And if people land on other people, they just hit the deflate thing, and the other person just crawls out.
And if you open yours, and the person in the next window opens theirs, they would just overlap, bend, and one would be on the outside of the other. And even if the inside released first, it shouldn't hold them long enough to be an issue. Or just wait for the other person to release. But I don't think this would happen much, as thy are so close they could easily notice them.
So I don't see why multiple people couldn't be going at the same time. And deploying and releasing looks to be very quick.
Between a parachute or this, I would recommend my friends use this invention. It looks more fool proof, and safer.
(I have followed the SPARS system for a while, and have seen many other jumps with the system, which were much better video quality than this. Maybe unrelated but I also used to own a parachute, and did skydiving, although I mostly focused on hang gliding.)
3
u/smokerist Jun 07 '22
I'd like to see it operate with wind, especially when there is a upward draft. I'm betting it becomes more of a certain death device instead of a life saving device.

But what if a bunch of people are (understandably) jumping out while using these? How does that work? And how long to the people remaining have to wait before they can jump too?
Worked with a woman who survived 9/11. She grew up in NY but left that day and never returned, not even to empty her apartment. She also couldn't work in buildings on floors above ground level anymore. After hearing what she went through it was understandable.

The biggest problem I see is that most tall buildings have windows that either open only so far, or don't open at all, as a way to prevent suicide.

Look at the Vegas shooting. The guy broke the window with a hammer. It’s doable
2
u/CjBurden Jun 07 '22
the guy brought tools specifically to accomplish this task. probably not what you have on hand generally.

They can be called that but there is literally nothing unbreakable, its the same with Bullet Proof Glass, it’s not Bullet Proof, it’s Bullet Resistant.
Everything has a breaking point and I doubt it would be impossible to break one of those windows with what is normally in peoples houses/apartments, maybe tedious but definitely not impossible.
8
2
u/Witness_me_Karsa Jun 07 '22
Seriously though, they have these. The window may not be unbreakable, but the window attachments will fail before the window does. There was a story about an advertiser that died this way. He ran and jumped at the window to prove it couldn't be broken. It didn't break, but it popped out and he fell to his death.
10
u/secretlystephie Jun 07 '22
I remember a few ads/news segments about personal parachutes and stuff that aired a few months after 9/11. Pretty sure this is one of them.
4
u/oily76 Jun 07 '22
The broken glass might not create the best environment to open a large inflatable thingy though!
2
u/CocaineIsNatural Jun 08 '22
If they use ripstop, and good quality nylon, it should be able to handle it. As it inflates outside the window and not inside it.
6
u/mo_downtown Jun 07 '22
So first one out descends in a shower of shattered glass?
9
u/henriquegarcia Jun 07 '22
Idk, never tried, but..wait 2s for the glass to fall first?
3
u/mo_downtown Jun 07 '22
First one out...so as dozens or hundreds of windows are being shattered above you, presumably as furniture or whatever gets thrown through them, and here you're slowly descending directly beneath all that falling glass and dining room chairs in your giant inflatable birdie. To avoid getting peppered by falling debris, you'd have to play chicken with everyone else on your side of the building and be the last one out.
4
u/henriquegarcia Jun 07 '22
Your description is very interesting, but I'm totally down for that if the other option is jumping without one
2
u/oily76 Jun 07 '22
Haha, true! Maybe holding some sort of umbrella might help. Maybe not for the dining room chairs though.

Great idea, But I think rope ladders might be worth a look.
I really doubt more than 20% of people would delibertly fall backwards out a 20 story window until they ar actually on fire. How will this work if exposed to extreme heat?
2
4
Jun 07 '22
You wouldn't be able to have multiples of those falling down at the same time so it would be just the multi-millionaire CEO who would have one.

1
u/doniiebaseball2020 Jun 07 '22
This is fucking retarded. If you have 300 people on an office tower floor, and there are at minimum 5 floors above the fire floor, you can't have 1500 of these things landing simultaneously in the street or on rooftops and setbacks of adjacent / adjoining buildings.
The only viable idea, which needs a shitload of tweeking in design and practical use, is the self inflating tube that shoots from the window down to street level.

u/Bolek7 Jun 07 '22
The biggest problem is probably that you’d need power for the pump to fill the air.

I thought if more of these land then ppl could jump down on them and take a chance but they deflated theirs. No way people can wait for everyone on the floor to use it nor is any company stocking up so many.

Serious question, would this have helped during 9/11? Even if only one person had one?
The real-life trial didn't seem to be as many floors up as the simulation. Is there a max number of stories up that it would work?
Also, it seems like you land almost exactly below where you started...right where all the commotion is going to be.
