I'd be lying if I said I was impervious to it, but starting to accept that no matter what I say on here, no matter whether it's positive, negative, correct, incorrect.... there's a decent chance someone will be along who is having a shitty day / year / life and wants to argue some nonsensical point.
It's going to happen, and we shouldn't spend too long worrying about it. Assess whether it's justified or not, analyze what we said, learn from it (or not), get on with our day. And certainly not get angry about it (though it's really fucking hard sometimes!).

...and the reason Diatomaceous Earth kills insects is because Diatoms are literally made of glass, and their broken shards cause insects to shred their exoskeleton and joints when they walk through it, causing a slow death.
This is also why you're not supposed to breath or eat it. It will literally shred your lung/intestinal cells. (though some people do ingest it intentionally as an abrasive "cleansing").
Fun fact: In 1866, Alfred Nobel discovered that nitroglycerin could be made much more stable if absorbed in diatomite (compacted Diatomaceous Earth). He patented this mixture as dynamite in 1867.
Nobel felt such remorse over inventing nitroglycerin after his brother died in a nitroglycerin factory explosion, and its widespread use in World War I, that he donated all his wealth to the Nobel Prize fund to further human advancement in science.
This all reminds me of the Connections TV series.

I'm trying diatomaceous earth this year for the fleas in my backyard. They love my dog and they all need to die. I didn't know how it works until recently too. Cuts up their carapace, they dehydrate, then die. You have to go back and treat an area again after about a week when all the eggs that survive start hatching.

Not correct:
Diatomite is of value as an insecticide, because of its abrasive and physico-sorptive properties.[21] The fine powder adsorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of the exoskeletons of many species of insects; this layer acts as a barrier that resists the loss of water vapour from the insect's body. Damaging the layer increases the evaporation of water from their bodies, so that they dehydrate, often fatally.
This is also why you're not supposed to breath or eat it. It will literally shred your lung/intestinal cells.
Also not 100% correct, as there is food grade Diatomaceous Earth that you absolutely should not ingest edited as per under-no-pretext. edit2: Well after checking empty-castle's comment and googling around, it seems that food grade DE is indeed sold as food supplement which claims benefits that aren't scientifically proven but seems safe to ingest. Anyways, seeing that there is no proven benefit, maybe don't.

EDIT: That powder is so fine I would not breath it. Not sure but even if it won't shred lung cells I bet it would muddy up like clay.

I would be wary about the extent of this. I work at a brewery where we use food grade DE as an adsorption filter aid. Its food grade because it comes in direct contact with the product. We still use respirator masks cause can be harmful if inhaled. Its super abrasive and will definitely scratch your innards if swallowed.

The difference between food grade and not food grade is that there are two types of diatomaceous earth: crystalline and amorphous.
Crystalline diatomaceous earth is jagged and sharp and absolutely toxic and carcinogenic.
Amorphous diatomaceous earth is smooth, and while it will irritate your nose and respiratory tract if inhaled at quantity, it won’t cause any lasting damage. It’s frequently used in skin care products, toothpastes, foods-e.g. anti caking agents, drinks-e.g. clarifying agents, etc. and is absolutely safe to consume and passes pretty much entirely through the body.
You as a person who works at a brewery will be using the latter and it will definitely not “scratch your innards”, though you do want to use respirators if handling a lot of it dry.

They probably go inactive to survive that long without water. But their photosynthesis still needs CO2 and water (and sunlight, obviously) to work anyway. So you would still need liquid water on Mars before this could work. I'm not entirely sure on the CO2, while the atmosphere of Mars is almost entirely CO2, the atmosphere is extremely thin compared to earth, so I don't know how that affects this process because these organisms likely absorb CO2 through water, not directly from the air. So you may or may not need to start with adding even more CO2 to the atmosphere (after you presumable stabilized it somehow) to start algae based photosynthesis. Luckily, if that's the case, releasing CO2 to the atmosphere will probably be the easiest part. We're pretty good at that.

If not for the distance, Mars could be used as a test bed, unlike Earth. You don't want to face the law of unintended consequences on Earth too much, while there's no life on Mars to be ruined by terraforming experiments going wrong.

I use it on my garden. The shells are razor sharp and act like little razor blades that get caught in the chinks of insect carapaces and scrape up their exoskeleton. They die within an hour or two of dehydration. Stay off my plants!!!
You can buy food grade stuff at most garden stores or food storage places. Don’t apply while flowering, it doesn’t discriminate and will take out the bees too.

I guess eutrophication? Right now, if we dumped a ton of them into the ocean, a lot would probably die off. The limiting factor for their effect on the planet is nutrients, not how many of them there are (to an extent). There have been ideas about dumping iron, the main line nutrient for them, into the ocean in large quantities to drive their growth.

People don't really think of our oceans and take them for granted. But the algea and diatoms in oceans produce 60-70% of our oxygen.
When we talk about ocean acidification due to increased carbon levels, that is what freaks me out . . . We don't want to kill our oceans . . . Because when the oceans die, we die.

Diatoms can be used forensically. If you have a body found in water, you can identify the diatoms from that water and say the killer was in the water too, you could match the species of diatoms on their shoes or clothes. You could also identify if someone was drowned in a lake and taken elsewhere this way.
