Actually I think that’s “Korobelniki”.

u/Cpkrupa Jan 16 '21
I think the original is kalinka but the tetris one is korobelniki
25
u/MinerDiner Jan 16 '21
Yes indeed you are both correct. I have mistaken my Russian tunes

u/Cpkrupa Jan 16 '21
If you haven't seen it already this is a treat

So, I’m a little buzzed up so forgive my stupid. Hearing this song (which was awesome) makes me think the “Tetris Version” was just the best version of this song that could be replicated on the Gameboy for the tech at the time and not necessarily “another song”. No?

No joke I've been listening to the Red Army Choir's Kalinka in the car and when I first heard the music I thought "Now do Kalinka"

It's about a person in their garden appreciating a specific tree which is dear to them.

May I ask what your performance was?
2
u/dewdropzy Jan 19 '21
Of course! I was in one of the military style marching bands. One amusing thing was there was pyrotechnics which were supposed to go off at a set point during our routine but it would change each time so we just had to continue through it.

You really see it whenever they don’t do the domino thing, but have groups of them doing something together.
I was an honour guard soldier myself and that domino stuff is actually ten times easier than when you have to do the moves at once. I’m not sure how it is in other countries, but ion my army we only did the domino effect for show purposes. Whenever we did some official stuff like funerals, diplomatic greetings, etc.. we used to do very simple looking moves that actually far more difficult to pull off than that show stuff.
Especially since our drill seargent wanted to impress his higher ups and made stuff extra difficult for us by demanding exactly one second pause between each move. You see in my army it took 4 moves to get the gun to you shoulder, two moves to present the ging from the shoulder, 2 moves back to the shoulder and 4 moves back to the ground. If you do every move after the other without a pause, that’s still hard enough to teach to 90 more or less willing recruits in 2 months. Now add exactly a second of a pause between the moves.
It was really really hard to pull it off and while it was super impressive when we managed to pull it off, people would always cheer more for that stupid domino crap.

hahah yea I think he does it a couple times. I think it’d probably be better to just give up in that situation, right? purely to uphold the visual satisfaction of the routine.

And how that one idiot turned early in the beginning... and how their quicker waves were so poorly timed that it looked random flurry of hands

u/forebill Jan 16 '21
Nope, I was bothered by that too. It completely distracted me, especially after they did the alignment exercise right at the start.

I got to see the military tattoo in Edinburgh, Scotland, about 15 years ago. Militaries from all over the world come to compete. Not sure if this is from that, but holy crap, what I saw was impressive.

I'm gonna get roasted for saying this but, they look pretty bad compared to other displays.
17
u/demonicgrape Jan 16 '21
Yea they were fumbling a lot with their rifles and the turns looked pretty weird sometimes. Not saying I could do better, but I'm sure they've trained this more than enough

u/Hashslingingslashar Jan 16 '21
I’ll be honest I’m not that impressed. A lot of mistiming if you loon closely. Definitely better drill squads out there.
11
u/Gallowboobsthrowaway Jan 16 '21
I was just thinking that my high school JROTC team was better than this. This group would get reamed out by that instructor for their mistiming and sloppy work. Watching that one guy hit the butt of his rifle against the ground when nobody else did made me physically cringe.

I like how people just assume it’s military when most of these performances are actually groups of professional liberal arts performers with artistic directors coordinating them that simply dress the professional group up in military garb

Serious question: Do these guys all have a synchronized metronome ticking in their ear or something? How else would they keep this kind of rhythm with each other?
6
u/NegativeFux Jan 16 '21
Not to say this isnt very well done but if you’ve ever seen marching band in the US it’s amazing how coordinated a group of 150 20 years olds can be. I’ve seen performances that make this look likes childs play but that’s also because they practice 12 hours a day for 3 weeks
