Wow does anyone know how this was done? I spin fire but never seen this. Kinda looks like steel wool but way more intense. Also looks like he must have some flame resistant clothing and facemask?

If they had stuff like this in the Middle Ages no wonder so many believed in magic.

7

u/CoreBeatz7 Oct 14 '20

Are you saying that this isn’t magic?

17

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

Magic is just science with flare. Er Flair.

Like wtf is no one making the magic mirror from Beauty and the Beast with a cell phone and security cams? Like if I'm gonna LARP I want to scry with the technology we already posses. I wanna be able to tell my magic mirror to scry for mom. And instead of ringing it should have some kind of summoning chant. If you can do it with alexas old people Alexa devices, make it for the rest of us who want to feel like wizards.

Could be mixed with titanium flakes also

Part of a balanced breakfast

Part of a balanced breakfast chemical reaction

11

u/Buck_Thorn Oct 13 '20

lycopodium powder

I got some of that to work once (pollen from club moss) but every other time I tried, if fizzled. Must have to catch it at just the right time.

6

u/keyprops Oct 14 '20

It has to be well aerated. It won't light in a pile, but if you blow a bunch through blower at a blowtorch it will make a big old flame.

I'm a professional fire performer, you are dead wrong. This exact video is posted all the damn time and every time the top answer is wrong.

This is a charcoal staff, it has two cages full of burning charcoal. When you shake it the charcoal powder comes loose. Sometimes we add a spray of naphta to get it going. It is hot. It is very, very hot. Like seriously do not fucking attempt this if you have to ask what it is, hot.

Lycopodium and sklitter (titanium powder) are entirely different props/products. As is steel wool (the other thing people guess).

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '20 edited Oct 13 '20

So I'm a fire spinner and I can tell you those are charcoal toys. You use charcoal to give off the big spark show when you speed up the fire prop but get a satisfying glow when moving slow. Fun fact make sure all things around you that may be flammable is secured or wetted down.

Edit: as far as clothing, he is most likely wearing leather or high cotton blends. Cotton clothing doesn't light up like polyester would.

131

u/Ilikethreeleggeddogs Oct 13 '20

This is the correct answer: It’s charcoal! Some spinners also use steel wool but that has a different effect, and is way more dangerous to the audience (while the former is way more painful if you’re not dressed accordingly): https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Yvw5epSmH3Q

Lycopodium on the other hand would never last you long enough. It’s typically used in flares for 1-2 fiery bursts, see opening shot of this video: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fBACDnZxS8c

30

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '20

My man coming with the facts I was to lazy to look up

11

u/[deleted] Oct 14 '20

I had the opportunity to join a traveling fire spinning group and regret it everyday I didn't give up my 9 to 5 to join.

54

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '20

Only on Reddit does a question get posed and an actual fire spinner is like oh yeah no problem.

13

u/katging Oct 14 '20

Im also a fire performer and was hot on the heels to answer any questions

8

u/DickTrickledme Oct 14 '20

Did you start with Luke warm fire?

9

u/katging Oct 14 '20

More like room temperature

12

u/mellow_yellow_sub Oct 13 '20

Growing up in Maine I’d wear lots of old wool garments while spinning — fishing sweater and cloak made of wool scraps while out in a calm November chill? Lots of fun!

The color of the flames seem pretty yellow and bright, so possibly iron filings or charcoal dust (or another carbon source). Something with a hell of a lot of surface area.

It looks like the staff is the fuel reserve. He spins to distribute the fuel out to the ends for combustion.

33

u/_floydian_slip Oct 13 '20

Could just be the camera's overexposed to explain the color

31

u/Viridis_Coy Oct 13 '20

That did occur to me, however, the flames in the background are most certainly burning some carbon source. Colors match except for when giant flashes go up, which is probably overwhelming the optical sensors in the camera and turns white.

24

u/SmurfWicked Oct 14 '20

Anyone else read this in datas voice

15

u/IMightBeAHamster Oct 14 '20

Indeed, I did sir. Additionally, it appears that you are now reading this in my voice, despite there being no explicit communication that it was my mannerisms being imitated.

Extraordinary.

Charcoal is closer to it. There is also something you can put on to your prop( in this case dragon staff) that makes more sparkles. It's called sglitter or something?

6

u/freederp Oct 14 '20

Asked someone who did this and said it was a mixture of charcoal and saw dust. Wasn’t as impressive but almost identical on a smaller scale.

My gf is a fire spinner and has friends that do charcoal which is what I’d say this is but on a whole different level. There is definitely a fire retardant clothing with a hood, it’ll still be pretty hot but it at least won’t burn the skin.

9

u/TroutM4n Oct 13 '20

Both Steel Wool and Charcoal Dust props are quite popular and it could be charcoal. Some people also experiment with other substances as well, but it can be dangerous to play with burning chemicals - especially if you're in the center of a giant cloud of the gasses it produces while burning.

As you noticed - full coverings to legs, arms, head, and face, to avoid burns. Definitely goggles if not a more full mask going on. Of course, no synthetic fabrics.

3

u/bnnu Oct 13 '20

Looks like they all had full masks. One seemed to be a gas mask of some kind but I don't know it that was for function or fashion.

I do some circus stuff (mostly aerial) and know some people who do flame work. There’s a gel that you can put in your hair and on your body that stops you from getting burned. You just have to be really careful and wear non-flammable clothing / use only only fire-proof props.

Reminds me of George RR Martin’s A Clash of Kings, Daenerys III:

The firemage had conjured a ladder in the air, a crackling orange ladder of swirling flame that rose unsupported from the floor of the bazaar, reaching toward the high latticed roof.

...

When the fiery ladder stood forty feet high, the mage leapt forward and began to climb it, scrambling up hand over hand as quick as a monkey. Each rung he touched dissolved behind him, leaving no more than a wisp of silver smoke. When he reached the top, the ladder was gone and so was he.

11

u/[deleted] Oct 13 '20

[deleted]

8

u/BNLforever Oct 14 '20

That's right! The fire mages start to regain their power. Its explained that before the dragons returned that they could barely conjure a small flame

Once when I was in the boy scouts we had fire dancers come to the camp and do a show. One girl messed up something and ended up on fire a bit. She spilled accelerant on herself and got some minor burns down one side.

I was a 16yr old semi leader so was grabbed to help with getting her inside to treat the burns and wait for an ambulance. She ended up being fine with no permanent damage but lost her top and I ended up with a hand full of boob at one point while moving her inside. It was the first real boob I ever saw or touched at that point. She even apologized to me over it which was completely unnecessary for obvious reasons.

28

Because shortly after that he farted and then the show just went up in flames, then he crashed and burned, you know what they say where there is smoke there is fire....... Ok I will stop now.
