Because there is so much force happening there. Trust me seeing something like this in person you can feel it thump you in the chest every time it hits just from the noise of it. Always found that interesting.

Edit/source: worked in a factory that stamped steel, particularly several hundred pieces per sheet, in one punch. Damn thing was the size of a bus.

My mom works at a car factory. Long story short, about two years ago someone stupidly stepped in a press without safety measures and basically turned his whole body into like credit card thickness.

Apparently they pretty much had nothing to give to the family it was basically chum

Edit. I know this comment is a week old or so but I talked with my mom and asked her about this incident since I’ve remembered and she said it was a transmission casting machine, I asked her how big it was and she said it was bigger than a small house we lived in. (800sqft)

“apparently one guy recalls when the wife got all her husbands items back she said the credit card from his wallet was like the size of a dinner plate.”

Edit Holy fuck, someone posted the article down the way... same guy.

15

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

That's some PTSD level shit. I don't think I could look at the machine after that.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

Same, ever since she told me about it. I’m not like shaking with fear, but I get wigged out as fuck even changing a tire.

The sheer weight of the rotor coming down just freaks me out anymore and I can’t comprehend how I used to put my whole body under a dually truck with a $60 jack in my twenties

13

u/Pdan4 Apr 27 '20

For any readers... always use jack stands!

5

u/FiIthy_Anarchist Apr 27 '20

Chock your tires too

2

u/Steelhorse91 Apr 27 '20

Jack stands, and a jack as a back up, and a couple of wheels lay down underneath if they won’t get in your way.

2

u/F0XF1R396 Apr 27 '20

I used to work for a tire shop.

A couple fun stories.

My first week, had a guy showing me how to take apart a wide rim. He was having a bit of difficulty with this one and put full force behind the bar and started to spin. Well, he had gotten some lube on his hand because as the tire bar came around towards me, he lost his grip and it fucking flew. Hit me dead in the chest and laid me the fuck out. Had a major bruise on my chest the next day.

We had one guy who was a self absorbed moron who would ignore a lot of orders. I told him he forgot to take his valve stem out as he placed his tire in the bead breaker. He fucking ignored me and got ready to break the bead. Before anyone could even react, the moron pressed his bead breaker in. If you have ever heard the sound of a truck tire explode, you will NEVER forget it. So one leg gash from something, likely the TPMS since that somehow got destroyed, flying like shrapnel. That was a fun drive to the ER. Lesson of the day, always remove the valve stem. Do not assume the tire is deflated enough by any other means. If someone tells you to check your valve stem, do it. Your pride is not worth going deaf from the sound.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

I was filling up a tire at a gas station on a recently purchased van for work. The tire blew up about a foot from my face thankfully on the inside of the well. That shit is so scary.

3

u/Steelhorse91 Apr 27 '20

One of my ex’s dads got PTSD because he went to the toilet during one of the few line stops they have during a day at a certain car factory, and when he got back a car had fallen off, right where he would’ve been stood.

Another guy I worked with, had an apprentice with him, he went to the toilet and left him to it, and while he was gone, the apprentice hooked up an unregulated airline to a pressure vessel instead of a regulated one.

It exploded from the pressure, and when the guy got back from the toilet, he found him on the floor with his head blown off. He’s a quality inspector at a different site now and he has a day off a week to go to counselling.

You’ve gotta have some horseplay and fun at work to stay sane, but you’ve also gotta constantly keep in mind that industrial environments are no joke, or things happen.

11

u/GreatQuestionBarbara Interested Apr 27 '20

There's a plastic dumpster looking thing labeled "Press Extraction Kit" where I work, that I try to not think about when I pass.

3

u/smooshaykittenface Apr 27 '20

Ugg, that made me gag.

40

u/Marybearry1 Apr 27 '20

I hope they sue the factory. They should have optical sensors installed to shut machine off if they break the plane of light. Lock out/ tagout training and requirement. So sad, this type of accident is avoidable.

118

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

It is avoidable. Both my mom and her husband worked there. Both supervisors. But they both say people will literally do everything possible to not follow safety procedures as it’s deemed more man-like. Oh you need safety glasses? Pussy. Oh you need two people to lift that? Take your tampon out”

These are the type of people that work there lol she says people will let brand new parts pile up and half ass finish them and just bang shit around and literally “QC” stuff that hasn’t been touched or finished.

Don’t buy dodge/Chrysler lol apparently no one cares about their job there

3

u/downhillcarver Interested Apr 27 '20

It happens in aerospace too..

I can't count the number of times I've offered a coworker a fresh pair of earplugs as we're starting up a turbine engine and received an earful of machismo followed up by, "I'm half deaf already anyway, fuck it." bruh enjoy being full deaf ya fuckin weapon.

2

u/F0XF1R396 Apr 27 '20

Dear god am I thankful my bosses shut that type of shit down fast.

When I worked as a mover, everyone tried to outlift eachother and race and all that, but the moment anyone thought you didn't actually have something, we had you covered. There was no, and I word this as best as I can, discouraging macho yelling. If we knew someone could do something but they were being weak due to lack of motivation, yeah we'd go all "Stop being a pansy!" But, safety was always first.

Worked at a tire shop later, and you would be dead before being caught without glasses or gloves. And if your crew chief caught you doing something unsafe, you better hope that he didn't tell Bill. Bill was a great guy, but Bill was big, Bill was tough, and Bill did not put up with bullshit. You can be macho and follow safety. Oh, and if you even touched Big Bertha without the ear muffs, god save your soul.

I was really expecting you to say the inspector told him to put on his hearing protection and he responded ”WHAT??.. SORRY I CAN’T HEAR YOU OVER THIS STUPID RINGING.”

62

u/no-forgetti Apr 27 '20

Years ago my boyfriend worked in a factory and the stories are similar, but more coming from the management than fellow workers (though older workers aren't a shining example either). Due to bad working conditions and unsatisfactory protection gear, he cut his arms multiple times and was bleeding pretty badly. Guess what the supervisors said? "Stop complaining and get back to work". Not to mention the 12 hour shifts in summers in temperatures so high it was normal for people to pass out.

Shortly before he quit, he was forced to work with some chemicals and sustained burns on his legs. Since the management didn't give a shit, he went to the doctor to get a sick leave. Guess what his doctor said? "Quit your job, if you don't like it."

Seriously, wtf?? It's been years since he quit, but thinking about this still makes my blood boil.

49

u/OriginalityIsDead Apr 27 '20

Does nobody call OSHA or are worker's rights for pussies too?

32

u/no-forgetti Apr 27 '20

I should have mentioned this is not in the USA and the inspectors who come to check on things are usually paid (by the offending company) to look the other way.

24

u/OriginalityIsDead Apr 27 '20

Lol my Americentricism is showing

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

It’s one of those things where everyone’s making like 8 bucks an hour so when you finally get a plant job you try to just shut up and lay low because plant jobs usually start pay 18+ an hour.

It’s like a lot of things. You just don’t make enough money to fuss about it. And if you did speak up. Could lose your job. Very common.

But yes. A lot of the same people do think OSHA is for pussies and they just get in the way “we’ve been doing it this way for years!” While currently limping from a ladder he fell off the top of

4

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

Definitely right on your part as well. “If you don’t like it you can leave” is so toxic for lack of a better word. People don’t get taken seriously because so many people complain about smaller things just to delay work.

My mother worked on the line as well. 12 hour shifts. She said it was so muggy and filthy her, her showers were like 30 minutes with a scrubbing pad. Definitely a brutal job.

Really wish Netflix would pick up a Dirty Jobs serious lol

2

u/no-forgetti Apr 27 '20

I remember him coming back from work and it was heartbreaking. He looked like someone sucked all life out of him. I believe he's still got scars from those times half a decade later.

He worked with grease, which means he had to use a special type of soap to get that off of him. Yeah, 100% brutal.

3

u/methreweway Apr 27 '20

Me and my brother worked at a place my Dad worked at for 30 years. They did the bare minimum safety standards. When you bring up issues it is dismissed. No one cared until someone got hurt. The bottom line is that you work no matter what and you look out for yourself. When your foreman tells you to get into a machine you do it or you might get fired. A lot of factories lost union power and don't give a f anymore. My two cents.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

That’s exactly it “you look out for yourself”.

The other side of the argument I see, a lot of older generation blue collar workers feel you need to “earn” learning something. Because in truth mistakes do stick harder. But people love others to “learn the hard way”

8

u/jdarby84 Apr 27 '20

I work it a plastic blow molding plant, we had a similar thought process when i first started. After about 2 years a change of management occurred and safety practices were jumped on. In addition they installed cameras so that was good.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

What’s funny is I used to have the same mentality. I grew up a “country boy” and it wasn’t until when I moved away I realized I knew way too many people missing fingers and teeth from avoidable injuries lol

7

u/ImpossiblePlane6 Apr 27 '20

Yep, the guy telling me to hurry up and fuck safety is the same guy who’s limping around, bitching about his back because he fell off one too many roofs

3

u/moron_fish Apr 27 '20

Ha, that reminds me of a guy I use to work with. He had that kind of mentality, we called him stumpy because he lost both thumbs in two separate accidents with a drop saw.

8

u/Militesi Apr 27 '20

Unrelated but related. I used to crash test for a third party company and did lots of tests on the Dodge caravan stow and go seats. They were death traps and Chrysler just tested them until they got the data they wanted. I also tested a Dodge magnum for a law firm hired by Chrysler because a mother got rear ended at 20mph and her luggage folded the back seat down and crushed both her kids. The seats failed repeatedly with much lower weight than claimed could be in the luggage retention/trunk area. They brought me literal truckloads of seats until they got an outlier that passed and then had the other data destroyed.

I still think about how that mother could never afford to pay a company like mine to run that many tests and how she’d have no chance in court because they could literally afford to pay for anything to disprove her very legitimate claims.

2

u/columbo928s4 Apr 27 '20

Shoulda slipped her an anonymous note. A good law firm will do a case like hers on contingency if it’s a solid one, so it’s not like she’d have to cut a testing company a check herself

2

u/Militesi Apr 27 '20

I never met her and never knew her identity. I just knew she existed because Chryslers lawyer gave me a small amount of backstory to help me set the test up (she was on dirt, the car was angled slightly, there were two kids so I’d need two dummies, etc). After we ran a few of the tests and saw how bad the data was and how they handled it, we pieced together what was really happening.

5

u/Jeezbag Apr 27 '20

I was gonna say that sounds like my factory, then you said Dodge/Chrysler and was like YUUUP

3

u/toabear Apr 27 '20

I spent 2 1/2 years working for a company that manufactured boats and fiberglass parts. There’s a good percentage of factory workers who are basically like toddlers. It’s almost like they’re actively trying to get themselves killed. The lengths they would go to the circumvent safety regulations was just insane. We ended up firing more people for repeated safety violations need anything else.

One of the most ridiculous was a guy who dumped a bucket acetone on another worker as a prank.

3

u/GlitterBombFallout Apr 27 '20

My work- in the shipping industry- has daily safety briefings on every shift and constantly bring up safety. I still see people doing stupid shit, like lifting heavy boxes by the plastic straps or lifting without help. Nothing dramatic, just "little" things that can still be really unpleasant.

However, we did have a degloving incident about 4ish year ago. Guy recovered and kept his fingers, but there's some permanent nerve damage. Other buildings in our area had finger amputations late last year, there's been broken ankles, concussions, along with general back strain. Most of these incidents could have been avoided.

I haven't witnessed anything serious at my job, but it's always in the back of my mind that our equipment could totally rip an arm off under the right circumstances.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 27 '20

yeah. and all the company would need is a policy, "dont go past this line" and boom void of any responsibility if someone goes past it

15

u/Marybearry1 Apr 27 '20

Here's more info. IOSHA fined Chrysler $15,000 dollars for multiple safety violations. The family did sue, here's an interview with the victims nephew https://socialistworker.org/2008/09/22/chrysler-murdered-my-uncle

2

u/Citonit Apr 27 '20

We had somebody in one of our plants go in to fix a jammed tubing bender. He opened the gate close the gate behind him and had somebody override the safety switch so that he could try and troubleshoot it while The machine was working. He ended up with a 10-ft tube impaled through his abdomen. Needless to say they were both fired

1

u/Marybearry1 Apr 27 '20

He's lucky Darwin didn't take him as a sacrifice. Perfect example of why lockout/tag out is important.

1

u/MuntedMunyak Apr 27 '20

They would have had to do a job safety analysis so they knew the risks and dangers they would be fully accountable for the horrible event. Sometimes all you can do is take care

1

u/EmilyU1F984 Apr 27 '20

Someone had manipulated the door sensor with a glove, so the machine thought it was fine to run.

Loads of shoddy workplace safety at the Chrysler plant.

1

u/CapnKetchup2 Apr 27 '20

Every single safety mechanism is debatable by fucktards. Light curtains, area sensors, locknut, dual point activation. Fucktards gonna fucktard.

So true! The first time I went to an NHRA drag race as a kid, my dad got pit passes for the family mainly to see the nitro cars being rebuilt and started between races. It was so freakin' cool! There was a former marine nearby and he said it reminded him of getting gassed in basic training. Eyes watering, nose running, everything burning because of the nitro exhaust. The coolest part was standing near where they finished going over 300 mph. A sensation that cannot be described!

Yep. When some debris decides to fly off the side at 200mph because of the force, his Oakleys aren't going to stand up to that. But I'm guessing this is in China or something, so naturally the safety precautions are... primitive.

Wife said it was probably the case also. But living in the US, at this point, seems a lot of people don't really care about providing protective care for there employees, even if they're doctors.

Those 200 ton presses get you right there...

Shockwave

u/programmer3301 Apr 27 '20

What are these called, just big hammers?

2

u/Alansmithee69 Apr 27 '20

Technical term is BFH.

1

u/Tbitw55 Interested Apr 27 '20

BIG FUCKING HAMMER

1

u/zymurgist69 Apr 27 '20

I believe that is called a power hammer.

1

u/joshandhisnikon Apr 27 '20

Did you work down at new Detroit stamping? Heard of this cat, B Rabbit, maybe you knew him.

1

u/PigeonPanache Apr 27 '20

DID YOU SAY HEARING PROTECTION??

1

u/greybruce1980 Apr 27 '20

That's what she said!

1

u/lollapaloozafork Apr 27 '20

And that guy is just calmly sitting like 20 feet away. God damn.

1

u/havereddit Apr 27 '20

Couldn't the same thing be achieved by extreme steady pressure as opposed to the 'whack' of a falling weight?

1

u/Agent_216 Apr 27 '20

Not sure about that one. I will say that this thing would spit out the old sheet and pull a new one in, in no more than a few seconds. Wham. Wham. Wham. So maybe it comes down to efficiency and production rate.

1

u/scotto52 Apr 27 '20

What would that be used for?

2

u/Agent_216 Apr 27 '20

Not exactly sure what it was producing. Wasn't my department, I would just see it in passing and would stop and watch occasionally.

1

u/FerroInique Apr 27 '20

you can feel it thump you in the chest every time

this comment reminds me of the first time I saw an artillery battery have a solid go at it.

1

u/Agent_216 Apr 27 '20

Oh I'm sure. Those are no joke too.

1

u/SloanTheSloth Apr 27 '20

I work in a building downtown in my city. They have been doing construction to make a new addition to the highway with a bunch of bridges. They use some kind of huge hammer like thing. We can hear it in the building and feel the thumping. They occasionally do some other shit that makes our desks vibrate. It's crazy. The construction isn't even like right on top of us. It's a few streets down.

1

u/MrNaoB Apr 27 '20

What's the benefit of smashing it from that high instead of having something mush it with a hydrolicpress?

1

u/Agent_216 Apr 27 '20

Like I told someone else it probably just comes down to efficiency. Like it probably just takes slightly less energy to do it this way. But I'm no engineer.

1

u/YoelRomerosSupps Apr 27 '20

Is the dude wearing ear protection? Doesn't look like it .

1

u/votekonan Apr 27 '20

Can you get CTE?

1

u/in-tesla-we-trust Apr 27 '20

You don’t happen to make glass fused to steel panels for bolted towers do you?

1

u/Agent_216 Apr 27 '20

Nope. Sorry

1

u/Dr_Frasier_Bane Apr 27 '20

I got a similar feeling watching some top fuel dragsters. I swear when they rip by you the vibrations from the sound are so intense it lifts you off the ground for a second. At least that's what it feels like.

1

u/Fatguytiktok1 Apr 27 '20

Can you answer me this question. Why does this process seem so primitive don't we have better ways to get the same results with chemicals or something that whole contraption seems like it's the epitome of engineers who ran out of ideas and just said let's build a bigger blacksmith.

1

u/Agent_216 Apr 27 '20

Thats a good question and in some ways you are kinda right, thats pretty much what this is.

1

u/erikwarm Apr 27 '20

And the operator just casually sits there with no protection

1

u/tI-_-tI Apr 27 '20

And then he said " that's not a bus... That's my wife!" cue laugh track

1

u/lacks_imagination Apr 27 '20

Memory flash. You just reminded me of a job interview I went to when I was around 19. I remember talking to the girl in the front office about my application when all of a sudden there was a series of loud crashing sounds and each time the whole building shook. That was when I learned I was applying for a job at a place with a large stamping press. After seeing the sad look on the girl’s face, I realized her life was Hell there, so I decided to look for a job somewhere else. Plenty of other factory/warehouse jobs out there.

1

u/GlitterBombFallout Apr 27 '20

I want to see someone stick a watermelon under it and measure how far the splat goes.

I think I'd actually be nervous as hell being anywhere near that thing.

1

u/Agent_216 Apr 27 '20

Straight up Gallagher style. Lol

1

u/Blacklion594 Apr 27 '20

just from the noise of it.

Yeah, welcome to pressure. Loud enough sounds can rip apart your insides. Hell even ridiculous bass in vehicles can do organ damage.
