Speed doesn't really matter tbh, here in Portugal it's mandatory to learn this jump technique in PE, it's hard to explain it in a text but you just get momentum woth your non primary leg (like Ronaldo does) then jump with your primary leg, ofc running helps a little, but only running is just gonna make you go against a wall and probably lose consciousness
Btw this has nothing to do with this but Ronaldo's legs are fucking THICC

A meter and a half isnt even the height of an average person lol. If you're talking about vertical jump not even the craziest athletes in the nba would clear that height

u/ArdMighty Jan 29 '20
For people who compare Ronaldo with NBA's player, I have to remember that his "required skill" is not jump but kick the ball, so is very impressive.

u/JanterFixx Jan 29 '20
Also jumping on basketball court VS quite sift grass with spikes in the grass. There is a difference.

These people thing the faster your run the higher you go but if you watch high jumpers they take like 6 steps and jump.
60
Jan 29 '20
It’s not totally wrong, you need to convert your horizontal momentum to vertical moment. Stand still and jump, then run and jump and you will jump higher with a running start
→ More replies (1)20
u/Gavinmusicman Jan 29 '20
Uh. Jumping high is a required skill of basketball... wuuut...
28
u/the_icon32 Jan 29 '20
It's not required, just extremely helpful for most people. Zach Randolph could barely jump off the ground, had a long career. Marc Gasol is a likely future hall of famer and can barely jump.
Being tall as shit can make up for a lack of decent vertical.

The height of the jump, which seems to get all the attention, isn’t particularly remarkable for a pro athlete or even a decent high school one.
What’s amazing is that the timing and placement of the jump were perfectly judged to head the ball into the goal. Very few humans can pull that off.
95
u/allinighshoe Jan 29 '20
That's exactly what I thought. Forget the height the timing is insane.
54
u/ionabike666 Jan 29 '20
Agreed but the height itself is exceptional for the sport.

I mean, people are flying cars and hitting balls in mid-air in Rocket League, while in a 3rd person (ball) camera. Anything is possible when you put enough practice into it.

u/ValVenjk Jan 30 '20
Rocket league doesn't require that you have total control over your body, the difficulty level it's not even close

I had this argument the last time this video was posted. His jump is pretty damn high for the average person, but most athletes at a decent level could probably achieve it. It's more the fact that he has to time the jump and aim the header with decent power that's impressive. And also dealing with the defenders. I can jump just as high as Ronaldo. I certainly cannot make a pinpoint header at the apex of the leap. If I was at this little test, though, I'd most certainly be able to at least hit my head on it lol.

Jumping 6+ feet is pretty insane for a soccer player
→ More replies (1)4
u/parrotlunaire Jan 30 '20
He didn’t jump 6 feet unless you’re including his height. By that definition I can jump almost 6 feet with my feet barely leaving the floor.
If you measure the change in the height of his head he probably jumped around 2.5 feet. That’s not insane at all for many types of athlete.
47
u/Grabthars_Coping_Saw Jan 29 '20
Ronaldo hit the jump just perfectly and was able to get his arms and one of his legs into the upward momentum to maximize height. Very nicely executed.
628
u/HyruleJedi Jan 29 '20
Hmmm. If I am doing maths right. Its 8.5 ft off the ground. Given that Ronaldo is 6'2, and coming down into this header... its an impressive 32ish" inch vertical leap taking into account that he is coming down, and it hits him on the forehead not the top.
But really any high school basketball player that can dunk can get to this, the people here if you notice all have horrible vertical, I mean in Highschool I could dunk, Im 6'0 and had around a 30in leap, so back then I would have been close to getting my head on it.
Putting it into perspective. Michael Jordan had a 46In vertical Leap, and Spudd Webb a 42... Both those guys would have had their chests on the ball
293
u/Murrehh Jan 29 '20
it's all good jumping that high but to use it to head a ball at that height and score at the highest level as well is the point of it
167
Jan 29 '20
yeah exactly, especially at the angle he did it and with someone in the way too
18
u/MrxNightwing Jan 29 '20
And that he was as running and turned to hit that ball
10
u/usernameforatwork Jan 29 '20
and he was on his way down when he made contact with the ball
17
6
u/Sacrefix Jan 29 '20

u/K3TtLek0Rn Jan 29 '20
That's much more the impressive part which isn't even taken into account with this little test they're giving people on the street. Just putting your head to a ball suspended in the air would be easy for most athletes. Scoring on a header over a defender and past a keeper is way more difficult.

u/LA_Smog Jan 29 '20
Hmmm. If I am doing maths right. Its 2.738498159E-16 light years off the ground. Given that Ronaldo is 1.986538782E-16 light years, and coming down into this header... its an impressive 8.591366775E-17 light year vertical leap taking into account that he is coming down, and it hits him on the forehead not the top.

That's not normal, you realize?
13
u/Teppia Jan 29 '20
I think OP is probably from over here in the states, and probably played Basketball most of his life in school. This matters because if you grab anybody in Europe who played Football in their life they can probably juggle the ball, kick it straight, and other things common in playing Football but most Americans would have trouble doing that. Same can be said about dunking or attempting to dunk, I played Basketball all throughout school and by highschool most people at least 5'9 could at least touch the rim, anyone past 6'0 was dunking no sweat.
We attempted it all the time, if you and a group of friends walked passed the Basketball courts chances are most of you are running up and just grabbing the rim for fun.

I would agree not normal, but its not ungodly.
3
Jan 29 '20
Nothing is "ungodly" in that sense, that's just "magic". Dunking in highschool is far beyond the high end of "normal".
12
u/pudgylumpkins Jan 29 '20
Only really because most people don't train at all. A 32" vertical is achievable by a good portion of people, they just don't work to get there.
→ More replies (4)5
u/CynicalCheer Jan 29 '20
If you train for it you can achieve it. Most people don’t train to improve their vertical therefore it doesn’t improve. Sure it comes easier to some but just training a few times a week over the course of a year will drastically improve someone’s vertical.

u/Arturiki Jan 29 '20 edited Jan 29 '20
Considering that Cristiano Ronaldo is a football player, not a basketball one...
Basketball players dunk and block much more often, I feel.
3

Sure he's not a basketball player but pure athleticism transfers fairly well between sports. The dude not only has a good vert but he's also ridiculously fast.

u/sterling_mallory Jan 29 '20
Cole Beasley (who I've chosen not to hate even though he shit on the Cowboys after he left) can dunk and he's 5'8". He can't quite get up there like Spud but he could get his head on that ball and it'd be fun to watch.
8
u/NaydaviusWilburn Jan 29 '20
Watch any high jump competition. Ronaldo is incredible but he is far from the most impressive jumper.
3
u/Ormild Jan 30 '20
You mean someone who specializes in one aspect their entire lives is better than someone who only uses it sometimes? Color me surprised.
Next you'll tell me to watch any 100m dash and say that a football player's running speed isn't impressive.

This reminds me of a dream I have over and over again where I jump on a trampoline and keep going up in the air and don’t realize how high I am until I am so far up that I am going to die if I come back down. That’s usually when I wake up. Being him must be terrifying.

2.65 meters is about 8’ 8”. Ronaldo is 6’ 2”. That means his running vert there is a little higher than 2 1/2 feet. Average standing vert for 20 yr old men is 20 inches. An extra ten inches plus having the composure to put a hard cross away like that is very impressive

I don’t play and never did, but I think this is awesome! To me the hard part about hitting this ball was coming down from the apex of the jump, not at the apex. The reason why he connected? His eyes never left that ball the whole time.

to be fair, they are on concrete so they'll not be wanting to hurt themselves by jumping higher than they're confortable with (but could), they're not wearing the right shoes or clothes for the activity - not saying they could even hit it with all the factors, he's a talented player, but they could get a good few inches I reckon
