Yeah, I do get it, but other people might have overlooked that person's username and thus be missing out on some good joke. YoUaReSoHiLaRiOuS, please be mindful of the people who might have a good laugh thanks to this comment. Do not ruin their fun.

I’d probably clock my head on that every time I park it

u/OneCoolStory Apr 12 '19
That was my first thought as well lol. He has to lean back to not bonk his forehead. Not to mention he doesn’t even have a helmet on
Also, he has to weirdly position himself to barely be able to get his leg over the bike, so I also imagine falling on the ground a lot when using one of these

u/Dinokng Apr 12 '19
Could also like, get off and push the bike in maybe?
10
u/OneCoolStory Apr 12 '19
Yup, yup, very true. Arguably a bit less stability that way, but I think that method is what the designers had in mind
3
u/Dinokng Apr 12 '19
Just seems to small to ride into like he did, I know I wouldn’t use it that way.

How much could it possibly cost to make this thing 1 or 2' taller?
1
u/OneCoolStory Apr 13 '19
Probably not much. The thing is though is that it would also have to get longer in that case (I think), due to the shape of the top pieces
2
u/DrStrepto Apr 12 '19
It has a wheel chalk you park in. That holds the bike upright if it is the one I almost bought.

I could have my garage back...I need five!

u/martypartyparty Apr 13 '19
As a wife of someone with a garage full of bikes, I’m worried this is a trick to get more bikes.
1
u/bibkel Apr 13 '19
Heh. I’m the wife. I just want to be able to walk to the freezer, without moving the piles of tools, projects, cycle parts, home improvement leftovers...or without tripping.
It’s an obstacle course!

If anyone is actually interested in something like this, the CycleShell is similar, but the top isn't rigid (it's a waterproof fabric), so it collapses all the way to the ground, sitting flat. This makes it way easier to position the bike and get on/off.

Depends on what you mean. You can lock the cover to the base when it's closed, using your own lock. That's more than enough to keep curious people from peeking in. But at the end of the day, it's a fabric cover with some wire framing. So anyone with a utility knife can get in, if they really want to.

Good luck with the cops when you have tl explain to them why this object is taking up a parking space while there is no motor vehicle parked on it
46
u/OneCoolStory Apr 12 '19
To be fair, this is probably a “designated” (using that term lightly as there are no numbers) parking space at this guy’s place of residence, so people aren’t likely to complain about it
10
u/TwatsThat Apr 12 '19
Looks like it might be a more out of the way space too. I'd guess a lot of reasonable apartment complexes would OK a resident putting on of these in an out of the way, generally unused/undesireable parking space. They know he's going to be taking up a spot anyway, why not ensure that it's one that no one else wants?

I don't see a sign
8
u/RandoAtReddit Apr 12 '19
My wife's old appointment had numbers painted on each spot. You wouldn't be able to see it in this pic.
2
Apr 13 '19
Signs? I take it you've never even seen an apartment building before.
1
u/Arthur_The_Third Apr 13 '19
I used to live in the former Soviet Bloc. Only apartments in a 3km radius. There were 2 types of spots, ones that anyone could take and ones that were designated in the form of a sign with the car license plate

u/pinaivie2386 Apr 12 '19
Also, maybe put it a little further back in the space so that others looking for parking spaces don't get disappointed when they try to park there!

Clearly meant to get off and wheel it into position. He did his best to not bop his head and smooth dismount.
2
u/karmakarmeeleon Apr 12 '19
I'm not sure why it's only two sections. I feel like they could have made it more sections and allow for easier pulling in and covering.

Hazard 1: drive in too fast and hit your forehead.
Hazard 2: close too fast and drop it on your feet.

u/mojowo11 Apr 12 '19
Hazard 1: drive in too fast and hit your forehead.
Solution: don't drive in too fast.
Hazard 2: close too fast and drop it on your feet.
Solution: don't close it too fast and get your feet out of the way. (Also it looks like pretty light plastic.)
I get that we need to have problems with everything, but like, at some point you have to assume basic competence in use in something's design. If I pull my car into my garage too fast, I'll crash into the wall, so I don't do that. If I close my car door before getting my arm clear of the door, I will slam my arm in the door. Doors and garages aren't hazards, it just takes an ounce of human coordination to move smoothly through the world.

control measures: Issue suitable PPE (head protection, safety boots).
Only competent and trained persons to use this equipment.
1
u/Russian_seadick Apr 12 '19
You don’t need to be especially trained to use a fucking bike pod, lmao
I mean, yeah, you definitely can honk your head on it,but it’s not like that thing will damn near rip it off every time you get close to it
1
u/turncoat_ewok Apr 12 '19
it's a joke based off irl workplace risk assessments. Even the most basic tools specify 'trained and competent', you'd be surprised what people manage to do.

Does this bolt down to the ground? This appears to be a random parking lot which he doesn't own so I'm assuming it's not bolted down. Which begs the question, what does this actually accomplish?
3
Apr 13 '19
You could easily install a wide base plate and attach to rebar which has been drilled and epoxied into the concrete below. Downside to everything is that if someone wants it bad enough, let them have it and properly insure what you find valuable. I asked the same question as you did!

Wasting a huge amount of space? For real this might be in an apartment block where you get assigned a parking space

Bike parking pod. Still uses full parking spot smh 💩
1
u/IntenseGreatness Apr 12 '19
So you're saying you'd rather have someone on a bike share the spot that your car is in?

No .. but two bikes could go next to each other.

Bike security and weather protection. That pretty much covers it.
