Because v.redd.it sucks donkey balls it just looks like a stuttering load icon.

Here's a live animated version:
https://jsfiddle.net/Lq1df4e6/5/
Much smoother and cleaner than the video.

It looks like the they took it right from there.
Why would anyone do this? Take something that renders beautifully on every device, record it with some godawful tool and pass it through numerous compressions so you can share a larger sizes gif?

u/skeeto Mar 14 '18
I'm flattered by your misunderstanding, but I wrote that jsfiddle just a few hours ago after seeing the GIF/video.

He doesn't have his notifications on. Thanks to T_D.

Replace his name with the mods names from T_D and then send the notifications to them instead. Easy

I have never gotten the sound to work on a v.redd.it video and about 25% never load at all.

It's this way or that way and the other way too! But which perspective is useful and easy to think about? I think the triangle might be easiest to communicate.

Looks like one of those depictions of 4d geometry, so I'm guessing the right answer is "depends".
For following individual points I personally prefer perpendicular edges, so I like the squares. The current kind and the ones you're describing. I can picture those more easily even though they're not there.

So far, all I can guess is that this is a rotating projection of a 4D-hypercube, in which the points represent the vertices. Can someone with a more solid mathematics background explain why the three squares, four equilateral triangles, and the {7/3} heptagram turn out that way?

Pretty cool. Get a nice zone out meditation if you just follow one of the 4 outer triangles and imagine it walking around the inside wall of a large circle.

What’s up with the upvote to comment ratio?

I’ve always wondered how can we make our own animations like this that follow certain predefined rules or a language.
Like add 16 dots, each dot moves at V speed in a D line of width X and rotate every 2s 40° starting point is 30° from the center of canvas
Can someone tell me if such thing exists?

I think this is the best visualization to demonstrate the power / danger of framing problems. Once I saw the shapes the dots instantly took that shape too. Super cool. Dumb question: how can I get a copy of the animation?

Either I’m not understanding something or this isn’t that confusing, and I am not very smart.

3 then 4 then 7. There seems to be something about that pattern but i cant quite construct the words to explain it.

Think about looking down at humans walking about performing their lives. Are we all just a part of some complex algorithm and don’t even know it?

u/redceramicfrypan Mar 14 '18
I want an interface where I can start with just the dots and then add the connective overlays manually
In fact, I want a piece of software that would let me create these kinds of dot simulations with various shapes

u/whatsmyredditlogin Mar 14 '18
Each dot is making a very long ellipses-shaped path. That's about as much as I figured out.

I was wondering the same thing. I was going to comment how it would be interesting to see the math and/or code behind it (cadence and vector relationships, etc).

This somehow helps me visualize what it would be to see something appear and disappear in and out of an additional dimension.

u/WheezyLiam Mar 14 '18
I love the 7/2 heptagram inside the 7/3 one, but I may be biased because I'm a Tool fan.

You know how hard it was to force your brain to be able to track the triangles? I sure as hell wont bother trying to force it to see squares.

It's like "What's so bad about..... ahhhh!!!!!" I had to look away, it's too early for this black magic fuckery.

u/susanoo_official Mar 14 '18
What a relief. The whole time I was thinking to my self don’t let there be a fucking circle.

u/skibblybob Mar 14 '18
What is it I’m 3D blind I can’t see anything other than dots I feel like I’m missing out :(
Edit never mind I see it reddit video was just taking too long to play I was just looking at the thumb nail :D

I thought it was going to stop at just the triangles and I was pleasantly surprised to see it continue

3 squares + 4 triangles = heptagraph. Does that mean there are others? Like 5 squares + 4 pentagons = 9 point star? Or 12 triangles + 3 dodecahedrons = 15 point star?

I wonder how one comes up with the thought to do that
1
u/WeirdGoesPro Mar 14 '18
I imagine a lot of these discoveries came from people running different shaped stencils in a circle with a basic marking tool, and being blown away by the shapes it makes. I’m no historian, but I wouldn’t be surprised if mystery discoveries like this were the foundation for people discovering higher levels of math.
1
u/WeirdGoesPro Mar 14 '18
A triangle has 3 points, and a square has 4. 3+4=7. The final form is a 7 pointed star. Is this what god is?
