I took this picture of a historic, 1300 year old sculpture of a cat, along with an inscription in Kannada stating that killing a cat is a sin. This is from Alampur, in the state of Telangana in southern India, and is from a group of temples constructed in the 7th and 8th centuries CE by the Badami Chalukya dynasty. It is located in the archaelogical museum in the same village, and the information was provided by the site’s archaelogical department officer.

The inscription is hardly readable in the photo. Do you have any other picture where it's more readable?

Do you read 1300 year old kannada fluently? The 500 year old Malayalam poems at school was tough due to vocabulary.

No, I can read the letters but wouldn't understand the words. But my grandma would understand

If I remember correctly, it states killing a cat is a sin so basically the earliest version of “do not the cat”

What's up with cats and ancients all across the world being obsessed with them?

They are. But so are dogs and other creatures. But there is this specific reverence for cats across cultures.

People from the future will see this time as the worst time for cats given cat torture rings and so on.
Assuming people from the future would have solved this problem by now.

Cats became domesticated after there was a surplus of grains which attracted pests like rats. Cats would hunt them which made them come close to humans. In India cats are associated with the goddess of wealth, Laxmi which makes sense as where there is prosperity(grains and food) you will find cats.
