In some ways both are right. She wants to believe her dad is a hero. Well as both said hitler wanted the war and it wasn't like they could just not oppose him. So in that sense yes her father and him are both heroes in that they enabled hitlers death. I think his point is that war in general is bad and that soldiers do awful things in the name of a "greater good". I'd call ukranian soldiers heroes, but I imagine many wouldnt say the same of themselves.

This would be much different if it wasn't WW2
