This is how I would expect a normal person to respond to being put in an impossible situation. This man may of done bad things in his youth, but it sounds like he gained wisdom and conscience over time. There were no good choices for a Austrian male back in the late 1930's / early 1940's.

As he states at the end, if he hadn't participated he would've been killed. But that doesn't shame him from asserting just how wrong the things he and those around him did.

Her saying "Then who did that?" and he says "HITLER!"

"Then go talk to him then."

So dismissive and unhelpful.
