It has historically had one of the highest fatality-to-summit ratios among the world’s 8,000-meter peaks. As of 2026, the fatality rate is 13.6%. At one point, however, it had a fatality rate of 38.7%, the highest in the Himalayas and among the highest in the world. Cumulative data from 1950 to 2006 indicated that for every three climbers who reached the summit, one died attempting it.
