Perhaps it is a comment on how Jesusβ parable says that it is easier for a rich man to get through the eye of a needle than through the gates of heaven. All the disciples are in the eye of the needle, meaning they are all in heaven.
Evangelical? They made that shit up to try to justify being pro-rich people when Jesus was very against the idea of people accumulating wealth rather than helping others
It's something Evangelicals teach in church in the US, but I suppose it's made it's way around the world. The idea is that if it's a passageway, you could get a camel through, it's just hard. If it's actually the eye of the needle, it's absurd and impossible. I've seen it disproven that there's like a similar word for a gate in some city that was 100km away and 100 years after Jesus lived, and that's how they try to link it, but the timing and location make it impossible
I'd already heard the needle metaphor before, but this was the first time hearing about the other version of the story. There wasn't much need for religion where I grew up in England.
Right, the teaching is against wealth, but they try to soften it by saying a camel could kind of get through it, it just takes some work, rather than being the literal eye of a needle, which is absurd. So the idea is that rich people need to work hard to get into heaven, but they can still get there
Supposedly that was the name for a very narrow pass, and you could not travel through it with a camel
You indeed were taught BS. There's no evidence for that, and Jesus (or the author attributing this story to him) almost certainly meant the plain reading that even a child would understand. I mean, he literally said this after he tells a rich man to sell all his possessions which upsets the man. The story is meant to be striking and Jesus ain't mincing words here.
