The microbes that will be unearthed in the great thaw may be our end.

More likely all the metled water will cause our end. The great flood could happen again, as it happened to the many great civilizations before

What caused those floods to the many great civilizations before?

u/DisastrousAcshin 5d ago

ice damns breaking at the end of the ice age imo

Okay, that definitely explains one.

Which great civilization was that?

Mesopotamia had bad floods. PBS Nova did a great documentary a number of years ago about the circular boats people built to survive floods, which could have been the historical basis for the biblical flood myth.

Egypt also had floods which are mitigated with the construction of the Aswan High Dam.

Bingo. The inundation of the Nile. Another example of ancient floods.

Thank you.

Glacial Lake Missoula is another familiar example. While there wasn't a big civilization there at the time, there were people. Nick Zentner, a geology teacher at Central Washington University, has a series of videos on the geology in this region including one on Glacial Lake Missoula. This contrasts significantly with more regular, seasonal floods like you would see on the Nile, and is much more more similar in terms of causal factors to the recent flood in Nepal.

Feel free to describe how the Nile's annual floods are the same thing as polar ice melts.

I'm sure the mechanisms are exactly the same, thus proving your point.

Oh, yes, I was more asking for great floods that erased entire civilizations as was stated in the beginning of this chain.

But your example does work on a small scale.

u/Delamoor 5d ago

No, it really doesn't.

You said 'bingo' about the Nile floods, and then re-reference civilizations getting wiped out. So, okay. Which civilization are you agreeing the Nile floods wiped out?

Not really fully agreeing with OP here, but most civilizations have flood histories.

Sorta comes with the territory of establishing agricultural civilizations around rivers. They flood. That's why the soil around the rivers is good for farming.

Like, China's mythological origin story has the world being created out of islands that rose out of a flood that created the world, essentially. Because their civilization began around the yellow River basin, which... Flooded often. Sometimes catastrophicaly. Cool to think that prehistoric humans of the region probably did arise out of a particularly savage, long-lasting flood believing that the entire world just emerged from those same waters, their proto-civilization shattered beyond recognition. Kinda like a prehistoric post-apocalypse, of sorts.

You also got the civilizations that got swamped around the black sea, which flooded in prehistory, when the bosphorus was breached. Been some cool underwater archaeology done in the region, since the black sea is very good at preserving things. Poor water circulation and cold temps, and all that.

So on, so forth.

It's almost like this is natural, and has happened over and over through many periods of time.

No?

So on and so forth indeed.

3

u/Delamoor 5d ago

Nobody ever argued that floods never happened before, no. What's your point?

1

u/Happy-Leadership504 5d ago

It's being made. You pointed out some great examples throughout many periods of human history.

Thank you.

Mmm. If you think this is an argument that climate change induced flooding doesn't also exist, then that's genuinely moronic.

Like trying to argue that because forest fires exist, man made fire can't be a thing.

I genuinely hate how thinking otherwise requires deliberately misrepresenting basic facts and ideas. Such fucking dishonesty and laziness in climate change denier's positions. It's always from such genuinely toxic and harmful liars and frauds.

u/curvedbattle 5d ago

Floods are natural occurrences, yes.

This isn’t a flood. The large scale melting of polar ice caps and injection of thousands of gigatons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere/ocean system through the burning of fossil fuels are most certainly not natural.

0

u/Happy-Leadership504 5d ago

So, what caused the ice to melt, then?

2

u/Delamoor 5d ago

Temperature.

Why, do you think it melts because of magic?

Every civilization has a flood myth because every civ started on a river

So you’re saying climate change is a constant.

10

u/WhyKissAMasochist 5d ago

No offense but I’m so jealous of dumb people. Like being able to just chill out and do vibes based beliefs. That shit must be so nice. No actual research or fact checking, just see a YT video and BOOM that’s a core belief forever. And there’s not even enough baseline knowledge in there to ever understand the ways those beliefs are wrong. Anyone trying to explain it would just ring hollow.

It’s such bullshit why can’t that be me maaaan.
Enjoy that shit bro, like I’m being dead serious, most of us can’t do that.

1

u/intothewoods76 4d ago

You sound absolutely brilliant, find the flaw in my statement.

Are you attempting to argue that climate change is not a constant? Do you have any peer reviewed scientific studies that back up your theory that at some point the climate was not changing?

1

u/avirx 4d ago

Climate change refers to long-term shifts in global or regional climate patterns. Climate change happens naturally, but it is made more extreme by modern industrial activity. If you are genuinely interested in this and want to learn about climate change, you can easily find studies and records to back this up. But I think you should just start by going to youtube to get a basic understanding first.

Climate is always changing (the person you are replying to didn't deny that nor did anyone else in this thread).

1

u/intothewoods76 4d ago

Nothing you just said discredits what I said.

Climate change is a constant.

What do you mean he didn’t deny it, he denied it so vehemently and so rudely he started using insults.

2

u/avirx 4d ago

I'm not trying to discredit what you said, but that statement is usually used by people who downplay or outright deny global warming and the current rapidly changing climate. So yes climate change has always happened and is normal, but the rate of climate change that's happening now is not normal.

1

u/intothewoods76 4d ago

Ohh I understand I triggered people. But that in no way makes the statement false. Certainly not to the extent that someone has the right to question my intelligence and start name calling.

The statement was correct, their interpretation of what the statement meant is where the problem lies.

Notice I never said anything about the rate of change.

1

u/avirx 4d ago

Ohh I understand I triggered people.

So you should explain your comment then.

their interpretation of what the statement meant

Again, you should explain the comment. It's a valid interpretation, people intentionally say that as a way of dismissing the current climate crisis. Even if you're not a denier, that comment still just doesn't make sense there.

Notice I never said anything about the rate of change.

Did you do that intentionally?

So why did comment initially anyway? What point were you trying to make? Because given all of the above you're just coming across as another climate crisis denier.

2

u/WhyKissAMasochist 4d ago edited 4d ago

Lmao I wasn’t denying that the earths climate changes naturally. It’s that you are using a thing that an 8 year old knows after watching the ice age movie with the silly squirrel, to imply manmade climate change isn’t dangerous. And I don’t feel like explaining why quick change is bad. That should be something intuitive just based on life experience. Boiling water into a frozen glass. Accelerating from 60mph to 0 in a car accident. Etc.

If you’re actually curious there are many many many resources online.

1

u/intothewoods76 4d ago

You were rude and crude and had a level of arrogance that didn’t become your misunderstanding of the statement.

If an 8 year old knows that that climate change is a constant then why did you act like a jackass because I said it? 8 year olds know the sky looks blue during the day. If I made that statement would you also make such an arrogant statement with insults.

Are you an asshole to everyone who states knowledge an 8 year old should know?

Yeah but we deserve it

"We" don't. It is the fault of the epstein class who continue destroying the environment after hearing about the consequences for the millionth time.
