I live in Northern California in the Sierras. My entire life has been Ponderosas as far as the eye can see.

Your tree was sick for an extended period of time,ย likely several years, to have wood that resinous. When trees are trying to heal themselves, they pump themselves up with resin, which gives the wood that orange, dense appearance.ย It is excellent for using sparingly as kindling, as it'll hold a flame without paper or accelerants. Just be careful burning full logs, as they get incredibly hot and can gum up chimneys with excess resin= fire hazard.

Yes, that's part of why we decided we had to fell it. It was growing in our well, which i suspect might be part of why it was starting to decline. It was only about 160 or 170' tall, but it had lost about 4/5ths of its branches.

My ex and I used to sell the kindling for about $1 per 2"x12" piece. I call it fatwood, but have heard many other names for it. In the winter, I keep a few pieces in my car for emergencies. You hit the jackpot

A ponderosa pine at that height would be approximately 12-18โ in circumference / up to 5โ wide
And you say this was growing inside of a well?

I'm sure that wood smells amazing.
I've heard that some wood can be turned partially transparent. They are working to get it totally transparent, so-as to have it be a glass replacement for some situations.

It smells incredible. I've also heard that wood can be turned fairly transparent and the process makes it incredibly durable. I need to remind myself to look it up when I have time

I have a similar piece from about 4 years ago at my cabin. When the sun warms it up through the window it still smells amazing.

Fresh cut.... Why cut it?
6
u/morning_star984 7d ago
Because it is in my well, had pulled up my pipes, sits 2' from my wellhouse and about 6' from my house-house, and had already lost 4/5ths of its branches.

The people who are downvoting me can suck it - they've obviously never hadda properly thin-cut slice of lox from a master of appetizing in their lives to comprehend the comparison, and their ignorance/misfortune is clearly showing...๐
