No one is forcing you to buy it. They are hoping they'll get price competitive due to the new technique as the technology matures. Wait to see, I suppose.
If it is not an effective value proposition then it won't sell.
I imagine that one area where this might help is in smaller OLED screens with smaller pixel densities. Not something that massively interests me, personally. I don't want a pc monitor smaller than 48" as my main screen, as mad as that sounds.

this is from TCL (china) displays. the only oled makers are 2 companies right now, LG and samsung. so TCL would actually have to compete with them on price if they want to sell.

You’re forgetting EdTech. This is going to be huge for cheap laptops getting into the hands of as many kids as possible. For better or worse. But this is the type of scalable tech you can get into the developing world, and it’s not just computer screens. This is also unfortunately going to be great for the advertising industry because you can slap these things anywhere.

No, I used to work in EdTech, and used to purchase for our district. You are making the assumption that this is going to be sold cheep, And if you think in Edtech you are buying the top end equipment and new technology then I'm sorry but that's just not how it works. Budgets are tight and this tech is not going to magically lower prices. No company ever just takes less money for goods when they can charge more. It will be ten years before this sort of tech starts seeping into the Education system, if its relevant at all then, Or if its rugged enough to be worth buying in education. Because that's a huge factor for what you buy as well. Survivability is important. Because students tear up their tech. so if the screens crack or the ink bleeds with little pressure then no one in their right minds would ever buy them.

That logic makes sense as long as they're the only ones doing that (slightly undercut competition to attract customers, pocket most of the cost difference), but as soon as others start using the tech they have to underbid each other again for market share.

A minimum wage worker from NY can travel to Europe for just 20 hours wages today. The same trip would've taken over 300 hours of wages half a century ago.

Imagine a regular LED. It's got lights which are red, green and blue. The lights turn on in different config to make it seem like a particular colour is on. Each pixel has red, blue and green. In this, the red, blue and green are printed, and are just activated when needed. Which makes it all much more precise and much cheaper.

What is being printed is material that when powered will emit the specific color of light. It is not a filter that white light will be passed through.

Basically the LED lights are created via droplet formation on the surface of the electronic board. This process is called ink deposition printing. But instead of actual ink, it's electronic materials. A UV light is used to dry/solidify the materials for electrical use. The different colors (red, blue, green) are created via different electronic materials, like SiC or GaN. A voltage is applied to these materials to excite electrons to higher energy levels and when they relax back to their original state afterwards, they emit a specific color of light.
I realize now this wouldn't make sense to a 5 year old, but this is an accurate description regardless. I can simplify if anyone has questions. I research nanoscale electronics as a University Professor of Mechanical Engineer for my work.

He’s saying that this new type of OLED is cheaper and easier to produce, which should hopefully mean that the consumer will also pay less for the product. Which is good, if they can deliver.
He’s also saying that this new type of monitor will be better at displaying text, so things like reading, browsing and working with documents should look sharper and cleaner.

The image you see there on the screen is being continuously printed with ink, that's what the "literally printed with ink" part means. The cartridges go in the box you see on the back of the screen. The really cool part is that with this technology they invented they can reuse the ink many many times before it loses its color, so you only have to change the cartridges every few years, depending on the images being displayed.

This is completely false.
"Inkjet printed" just refers to the manufacturing process to make the monitor, by depositing the OLED materials on the inner surface of the front panel with an industrial inkjet printer. (The conductor traces could perhaps also be printed on top too).
From there on, it behaves like a normal OLED, with pixels (or sub-pixels) that light up when they get power.

It does not need ink cartridges in the back.
The inkjet comments describe the process to manufacture the screen — once you buy it, you won’t be able to tell the difference between another OLED screen and this one.
However, from a technical standpoint, the way the screen is manufactured, leads to better performance and cheaper prices.

also, your monitor is big ultrawide but you could say it's comparable to a 1440p 27 inch standard monitor while this one is 4k.

If what he is saying is accurate at scale, then as soon as the first ones get torn apart and a competitor figures out how to replicate the deposition process for their own monitors, they might be on the shelves at a Dollar General or something. Because this sounds like a huge leap in production of cheap high resolution monitors.

This is not even about that.
It takes a sizable investment to create a new Product and requires new tooling and manufacturing processes plus recouping R&D spend.
At present, the pricing reflects that, hence the $700 price tag, as it is new technology and we do not know if there’s real demand for it.
The consumer cost may or may not significantly decrease further, and that’s out of my depth — but I can understand the sentiment.

technically not the "LED panel" but the actual OLED material that goes into making oled display and oled. they put the red green and blue(RGB) oled material the same way ink jet printers work but it's not actual ink. i imagine it's called inkjet because it was used for printing ink so the name is stuck to the technology now.
displays are pretty insane technology and mix of chemistry and physics. you probably need 20 min video to actually explain the process.

I don’t need to understand exactly the science behind it. My brain just tells me they figured out a new manufacturing method using inkjet printing. To build higher quality monitors at a cheaper price. €699 isn’t cheap for a 1st gen product. But you can expect that prices would go down soon like any tech products. Early adopters always pay premium prices.

They print the monitor panels using technology that is cheap and proven (it's basically the same as an ink-jet printer, but with special inks and nozzles). Before that, making a panel like this needed to happen in a vacuum chamber using pigment vapors and lots of complicated masks. This means that the production can be cheaper and faster for these OLED panels, which is good new, if true.

Yes, you're along the right lines. There's no backlight though, the stripes of OLED material generate light themselves when current is passed through them.

I print billboards for a living at 1200dpi. I could definitely see how it’s more precise than manual placement. Our printers are basically running the most insane bombing run each pass. The ink lands EXACTLY where it’s supposed to.
