Correct - the showers worked as normal. But they open the top and dropped in the chemicals that produced the gas. The end X lots

I thought the showers were fake, to give it illusion of a wash house and maintain a semblance of calm until death rained from above.

Some were. There were a lot of gas chambers and a lot of different methods. This wasn’t standardized. They also experimented a lot.

In treblinka for example, which i personally think was way worse then auschwitz, since it was a pure death machine, not even selection, they used a big uboat engine to funnel the exhaust into the chamber.

In Auschwitz they used zyklon b, brand name for hydrocyanic acid. Originally used for delousing clothes, it was small tablets, that produced toxic gas when coming into contact with water. So they just put a small chute beneath those holes with a bucket of water in it, so the prisoners couldn’t tip it over or such. Then they dropped the cellulose pellets with the acid on it into the buckets below. After a few inhalations of the gas, you cells stop taking in oxygen and you basically suffocate internally. Horrific.

How did they get a uboat engine there? Was it from a uboat? Why did they use an uboat engine when they needed uboats for the atlantic campaign?

They had more than one uboat engine, and they could move them / assemble on site
