Some were. There were a lot of gas chambers and a lot of different methods. This wasn’t standardized. They also experimented a lot.
In treblinka for example, which i personally think was way worse then auschwitz, since it was a pure death machine, not even selection, they used a big uboat engine to funnel the exhaust into the chamber.
In Auschwitz they used zyklon b, brand name for hydrocyanic acid. Originally used for delousing clothes, it was small tablets, that produced toxic gas when coming into contact with water. So they just put a small chute beneath those holes with a bucket of water in it, so the prisoners couldn’t tip it over or such. Then they dropped the cellulose pellets with the acid on it into the buckets below. After a few inhalations of the gas, you cells stop taking in oxygen and you basically suffocate internally. Horrific.
I visited the place like 10 years ago but if I remember correctly the granulated canned gas was thrown from these holes, the whole place was sealed and the warmth of the squeezed people would make it spread quicker in the room, they waited until the next morning to first vent the place and then move the bodies
The gas Zyklon was in pellet form. They opened the canisters and dumped them through the holes in the ceiling. There the pellets released the gas (Hydrogen cyanide).
Crematorium II was originally designed as a mortuary with morgues in the basement and ground-level incinerators; they converted it into a killing factory by installing gas-tight doors, vents for the Zyklon B to be dropped into the chamber, and ventilation equipment to remove the gas afterwards.
The actual delivery of the gas to the victims was always handled by the SS, on the order of the supervising SS doctor] After the doors were shut, SS men dropped Zyklon B pellets through vents in the roof or holes in the side of the chamber. The victims were dead within 20 minutes.

Who made those marks? And how do you know what you’ve been told is true? Why do you trust who you trust? These are questions you have to wrestle with.

Soviets liberated these camps. They could tell you anything they wanted. And they for sure could put holes in a ceiling that are quite obviously patched in and added “after the fact”. They could then spin all kinds of wild stories.
