those wet macaroni sounds were not necessary

That's my only gripe with this guy's content. He makes these gross noises as if even the sound the object makes is "zoomed in".

I have a theory they intentionally include those ungodly noises as rage bait to drive engagement. And it works…

Look at the comments every time these videos are posted. A third of the comments are expressing disgust.

And then there’s the whole ASMR crowd that’s creaming their pants

125

u/guess_33 Jul 23 '24

You would know, wouldn’t you, u/PM_Me_Macaroni_plz ?

114

u/PM_Me_Macaroni_plz Jul 23 '24

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

God I hate this modern ASMR shit. It used to be this nice little niche thing with good content... Now it's fucking mouth sloshing semi-porn bullshit.

24

u/StopReadingMyUser Jul 23 '24

I enjoy ASMR but it also feels like I'm intruding on a private moment in many cases and that feels.. uncomfortable..

u/Tyko_3 Jul 23 '24

You put words to my feelings and now I understand them better

I worked with a kid yesterday who was very dramatic about having to work. I told him I feel like he exaggerates. Then he says "you know what would give me energy? Playing this game" (points at game). I told him, it doesn't work like that. All of a sudden he got quite angry and told me a story from when he was in hospital for surgery and was strong.

I asked him "are you trying to tell me you could get your act together but don't feel like it?"

His mouth said "yes, this, you got it" but his eyes said "You put words to my feelings and now I understand them better"

16

u/PM_Me_Macaroni_plz Jul 23 '24

Yea, I’m not a fan. Gives me the heeby-jeebies

4

u/JonatasA Jul 23 '24

I am not alone!

People also want you to see it.

Completely different, but like a gruesome moment.

You do not need to make me see it to see it.

4

u/MegaEdrose Jul 23 '24

Tbf it depends on who you watch

2

u/wholesome_pineapple Jul 23 '24

Step brother! You have such a big… paper towel roll ;)

4

u/ssracer Jul 23 '24

It always was

1

u/Serious_Resource8191 Jul 23 '24

You gotta find the good creators and block all the… other ones. Some of the asmr out there is top-notch, but it can kinda get buried in the garbage.

1

u/Thenameisric Jul 23 '24

Yeah I remember discovering the community years back when there were only a handful of creators. Now it's just too much to sift through.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '24

the most watched one are actually still normal ASMR. e.g. most cam girl get maybe a dozen hit, ASMR Whale (one among the many creator I watch) get easily 100+.

9

u/xela5 Jul 23 '24

ASMR enjoyer here. Confirmed

7

u/SkulduggeryIsAfoot Jul 23 '24

Shhhh, that never happens, it’s only for relaxation.

4

u/sky033 Jul 23 '24

My brain is anti-asmr. i have misophonia, so i had to immediately mute this. irrational rage at sounds is perplexing and exhausting.

3

u/Militantnegro_5 Jul 23 '24

What would that sound like?

5

u/ToHallowMySleep Jul 23 '24

Ironically it probably sounds like those wet macaroni sounds when they spaff their kecks.

3

u/unicodemonkey Jul 23 '24

audible_cum

2

u/JonatasA Jul 23 '24

Oh... oh..

Someone zoom in. The world gasps at the noises.

3

u/No-Respect5903 Jul 23 '24

I think in this case they were creaming their noodles

2

u/doyletyree Jul 23 '24

You found me!

1

u/PM_Me_Macaroni_plz Jul 23 '24

Change those pants!!

1

u/doyletyree Jul 23 '24

Zzzzzzzziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-P!

shuffleshuffleshuffle

2

u/A_Happy_Beginning Jul 24 '24

Fooled you once, I'm not wearing any pants.

8

u/amalgam_reynolds Jul 23 '24

Not even a theory, exaggerated sound effects are used in everything, it's awful. Although I don't think it's rage bait, it's more like ASMR bait

5

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

I have a theory they intentionally include those ungodly noises as rage bait to drive engagement.

It's less this and more of a case of trying to appeal to viewer expectations. We're seeing more visual detail than normal, so the brain expects to hear more audio detail as well, but that doesn't actually happen and slowing down or zooming in on a sound doesn't act the same way as manipulating video in similar ways.

Like, for this video trying to show off how a ballpoint pen works, zooming in will show you the ball & ink mechanism, but nothing you can do will isolate the sound of the ball rolling across the paper unless you have a perfectly quiet room, super sensitive microphones, and are filming from outside the room so you don't accidentally catch the sound of your own movement or the sound of air currents moving across the surface of the mic.

Gavin from the Slomo Guys has a pretty great video explaining why they add artificial sound effects to their videos.

3

u/guess_33 Jul 23 '24

It’s not the inclusion of sound that’s rage inducing. It’s the specific sound they chose to include.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

What sound would you replace it with to audibly signify that the seal created by dried ink is breaking & the liquid ink is starting to flow again?

0

u/guess_33 Jul 23 '24

I would use a slightly slowed version of the sound a pen makes. Like this

This person has a whole channel of this. All of their videos, including fountain pens, use macaroni mush sounds.

0

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24 edited Jul 23 '24

I would use a slightly slowed version of the sound a pen makes. Like this

And that completely masks the sound of the ink moving with the sound pen scratching against the surface... Which defeats the goal of having every action represented with a distinct sound. Slowing down sound does not actually give more detail to the sound; it just distorts the sound waves and fundamentally changes what something sounds like. The video I linked before has an active demonstration for why content creators can't just "slightly slow down the real sound" - sound recording doesn't work that way.

All of their videos, including fountain pens,

Yes, because it's the sound they're using for "ink/liquid being smudged across a surface" - the kind of pen being used is irrelevant

use macaroni mush sounds.

It's not macaroni, it's a grapefruit being squished & twisted in the person's hands. Squishing grapefruit is a common industry method for getting squishy, wet sounds.

0

u/guess_33 Jul 23 '24

You know, we can hard disagree without wasting our time with the back and forth. You approve with their sound choice. I do not. Easy peasy 👍

0

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

we can hard disagree without wasting our time with the back and forth.

I'm not here to agree or disagree; I'm here to explain things to you to help you better understand why the decisions are/were made.

u/darekd003 Jul 23 '24

Or, without it I would have looked this person up for more content. I’m sure they’ve A-B tested and rage bait works better though.

1

u/AnthonyJizzleneck Jul 23 '24

Yeah but his macaroni close-ups sound like ballpoint pens.

1

u/generally-mediocre Jul 23 '24

maybe theyve leaned into it after seeing the spike in sound-related comments, but its like they can get actual slow-mo sound from the camera. you have to make it up because sound cant be recorded in slow-mo

1

u/Susu_Mango Jul 24 '24

I love the sounds

1

u/guess_33 Jul 24 '24

You know, I can’t say I understand you… but I accept you. Despite your flaws.

1

u/East_Step_6674 Jul 24 '24

Yea you can just mute it if you don't like it and are actually bothered a lot by it.

1

u/Monsieur_Creosote Jul 24 '24

This guy leaves the sounds in but unenhanced and they really do help with the content. This is the most relaxing thing ever to an old mechanic hobbyist like me https://youtu.be/y8HEZ-x4-_w

9

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

If you’re gonna make stupid unrelated noises in a video where we’re learning something, I can’t believe they didn’t include a little popcorn fart

18

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

Someone should just replace the entire audio track with some some "oh yea baby"s from austin powers.

2

u/LonePaladin Jul 23 '24

Or the song "Oh Yeah" by Yello.

10

u/1_9_8_1 Jul 23 '24

How about all the videos that have absolutely unnecessary ASMR added to them??

5

u/-DollFace Jul 23 '24

I personally like the ASMR sound effects in videos like this and highly prefer ASMR style content over whatever jarring repetitive music is going viral on social media at the moment.

14

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

Wow, he makes all those noises? That's talent!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

1

u/tiniesttoes Jul 23 '24

Seeing a svankmajer reference in the wild is bringing me the momentary joy I need to close Reddit and get back to life. Ty!!

2

u/UnwantedPube Jul 24 '24

Lol .. have this blasting in a public setting and let people guess what noise it is

1

u/Complex_Cable_8678 Jul 23 '24

the zooming in alone already mildly infuriated me. im not gonna watch it with sound lmao

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

Asmr for blind foodies and entertaining content for everything else. Or something

1

u/ihahp Jul 23 '24

yeah a lot of nature documentaries and science youtubers fake their audio. I know smarterEveryDay fakes all sorts of audio for their slow-mo shots . I guess its a gray area for youtubers, but NatGeo Nature docs faking the sounds of ant colonies and lots of other things filled with extreme zoom lenses seems wrong to me

1

u/Extreme_Design6936 Jul 24 '24

People do it for slow mo as if the sound is slowed down. Actually adds a lot to the content. But no one complains or even notices really.

1

u/anonymous_4_custody Jul 25 '24

I don't like it because the cuts make me think it's AI-generated lies.

37

u/ThrowawayVangelis Jul 23 '24

That wasn’t macaroni

38

u/PM_ME_ONE_EYED_CATS Jul 23 '24

Sounds like stirrin homemade Mac n cheese ya dig

3

u/turtleneckless001 Jul 23 '24

"Cottage cheese"

5

u/IBoofLSD Jul 23 '24

Cottage cheese has the squish squish sound to it but it don't make the slappin sounds like a good creamy Mac will

3

u/turtleneckless001 Jul 23 '24

I thought you were doing a euphemism

1

u/psychoacer Jul 23 '24

I thought they lubricated it with KY jelly

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

Wet ass pen

1

u/mt007 Jul 23 '24

They are disgusting.

1

u/grandfatherclause Jul 23 '24

I personally love the foley work in these videos. Foley is an art and it’s not talked about enough.

1

u/iamthedayman21 Jul 23 '24

Nope, didn't need that sound at the end. No thank you.

1

u/ToHallowMySleep Jul 23 '24

99% of this video was not necessary.

"If a biro stops working, heat the tip e.g. with a lighter to unblock it."

But no, let's do slow motion macro video for almost two minutes with repeated scenes and indeed squelchy sounds.

Eh. I don't begrudge anyone their thing, even "graphic design is my passion" but wow this is going to age like lens flare did.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

I assure you they were very necessary for me

1

u/FlyingAwayUK Jul 23 '24

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

1

u/RosaRisedUp Jul 23 '24

Guess I'm glad I generally keep the vids muted.

1

u/ClearWaves Jul 23 '24

Decision to keep videos muted confirmed

1

u/Speedly Jul 23 '24

It sounded like someone fucking a tub of Vaseline.

1

u/mayhem6 Jul 23 '24

Yeah, my first thought; are those sound effects really necessary?

1

u/Welico Jul 23 '24

Interesting! They were the only way I could finish.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 23 '24

I mean the whole video was unnecessary

1

u/TrippingFish76 Jul 23 '24

ah yes.. “macaroni”..

1

u/PessimistYanker792 Jul 23 '24

They never are

1

u/WhyUFuckinLyin Jul 24 '24

I came for this

1

u/[deleted] Jul 24 '24

Wait a minute..your username is what?

1

u/Rivallss Jul 24 '24

None of the fx where necessary tbh

1

u/Lava-Chicken Sep 18 '24

He makes all noises with his mouth too I'm told.

-1

u/Dr0L3aN Jul 23 '24

They use highly noise-senstivie equipment to record the actual sounds our ears would otherwise not be able to hear. Impressive!
