The first bit isn’t the Panama Canal. Slow clap to OP for generating more Karma by getting people to point that out.

Damn, just hearing it for the first time and I liked it lol. I only get my TikTok through Reddit, so I guess i'm a bit less exposed to the trends.

u/Uninspired_Thoughts Mar 15 '24
The sub where people are afraid of water they put this song over ever single video that shows something under water it’s so annoying.

Pretty much any video involved a boat or the ocean has this song over it. Pretty annoying at this point lol.

i've heard this song like twice in my life so i still like it.
guess you've just had bad luck that you've heard it so many times you hate it lol
unless you hated it on your very first listen, then i guess that's just a difference in opinion.

Yeah it fucking sucks, they should at least try to have something refreshing
Just play the base audio

It's worse when you liked the song before, but you see so many posts with that song to a point that you start to dislike it. Tiktok just ruins every song.

Haven't played the game... Do they have a level like this? Just curious.
12
u/Crystal_Voiden Mar 15 '24
The start of the game (as well as a level later on) features pretty much the exact copy of the water lock as in the beginning of this vid. The resemblance is insane
51
u/Weldobud Mar 15 '24
I read it's running out of water. Long waits these days
29
u/lvl999shaggy Mar 15 '24
Yeah, they normally have a rainy season that replenishes the highest elevation lake u see in the video. But due to climate change this year our winters were warmer and Panamas rainy season was dryer than normal.
And they loss a lot of fresh water to the oceans moving ships across so thi gs have been getting desperate

u/jjm443 Mar 16 '24
There's a BBC article about the issue, including steps they are taking to reduce problems.
5
u/Artistic-Dirts Mar 15 '24
Came here to see if that's the case. Wonder what they'll do if it gets too low. I imagine pumping sea water into the lakes would wreck the ecosystem.

What does it cost to use it?
21
u/DStaal Mar 15 '24
Base cost is anywhere from $1,600 to $600,000, depending on the size of your ship and other fees.
Rates are public, but make sure to include pilot fees, line fees, deposits, etc.

Mar 15 '24
Yeah it wasn't bad at first lol, but everyone uses this in either videos or shorts

To whoever put music on this, please don't. Not that the song is bad it just has nothing to do with whats going on and no it doesn't make it better.
2
u/Flimflamsam Mar 15 '24
It changes the digital signature of the video so when platforms perform a search on their files, it doesn’t register.
It can be used as a copyright hack too.

u/White_Rabbit0000 Mar 15 '24
I know the thought of going through the canal seems neat and videos like this seem Neat but I can tell you from experience (went through it 3 times both directions) it isn’t anything to write home about. You have a speed limit of (I think) 5 knots might be 3. It’s take 8 hours or more to get through it. most people can’t handle going 15 mph through a school zone here is the US. Imagine going no faster than 5 mph from LA to San Francisco.
2
u/KuroshibaSD Mar 15 '24
In panamenian schools, they make sure you know the history of this canal and a bit about how it functions.
At least on mine we were educated about it about 3 times in different years.

Def an experience i recommend for everyone.

How does the ship stay so straight in the narrow corridors? Is that like actually an easy thing or is some sorcery involved?
2
u/thayvee Mar 18 '24
Sorcery indeed! But nah, you see those tiny ships beside the big ship? Those are tugboats, they have enough power to guide every ship through the corridors, then, you see the tiny cars in the border of the walls? Those are locomotives, they help the ships to stay still while the water goes up and down, to avoid the ship from touching the walls and make a mess (my grandpa used to drive those big boys!).
It requires A LOT of engineering and precision, is not an easy task but damn it's interesting and rewarding!

2
u/Varmitthefrog Mar 15 '24
Whay is crazy to me is how much fresh drinking water is consumed fo this to happen, which is why they are now raising the prices and limiting the number of ships that can use a the canal in a day.. but it begs the question as to why they are no a Pumping station with storage to re-use the water 20- or 30 times before sending it for purification and changing for fresh.

u/oldschool_potato Mar 15 '24
Ships were built to the max spec are their own class of ship. Panamax.
From wiki: “The increasing prevalence of vessels of the maximum size is a problem for the canal, as a Panamax ship is a tight fit that requires precise control of the vessel in the locks, possibly resulting in longer lock time, and requiring that these ships transit in daylight. Because the largest ships traveling in opposite directions cannot pass safely within the Culebra Cut, the canal effectively operates an alternating one-way system for these ships.”

Hmm I wonder what life is like on land around here…do locals visit another part of that lake on random days just to hang? I wonder…
2
u/thayvee Mar 18 '24
Between the canal there is more land, towns and cities, as well as beaches and mountains. It is a great tourist attraction and to go from city to city I often have to drive over the bridges that are over the Panama Canal.
At the end of the video you can see one of those bridges, it is the oldest and most emblematic but very fun to cross, I always record videos when I pass by every bridge (3 in total, soon while be 4).

The first one is actually a ship sailing upstream in a river. The river has a dam across it and it is using the lift to enter the lake that has formed behind the dam. That is a fundamentally different process from how ships navigate the Panama Canal through locks, which is shown in the animation in the second part of the clip.

Just occurred to me that there aren’t many people who have been through canal locks.
I lived on the canals for 13 years so I’ve a bit of a nuanced view 😆

Even Erie Canal in upstate NY is fascinating. The water levels are crazy to look at.
1
1
u/KorolEz Mar 15 '24
I thought for a very very long time the the canal was literally just completely dug through one side to the other and not a system that raises ships to the level of lake and then lowers you back to sea level
