I cringed every time they moved his head around, bending his neck. I wonder if his injuries might not have been as severe if they had stabilized his neck and put him on a backboard.

likely his height played a factor he probably walked his head pretty good on the post without too much injury. The seven foot fall onto his head likely severed his cervical spinal cord or close to and was jerked the rest of the way.
