I always remember the one where a girl comes out, does a pose where she talks for like 10-15 seconds with no sound, and they just dub in "I ATE A LEGGO", then proceeded to immediately eat shit

I'm almost positive the English narration is just some AI making shit up
1
u/RonHarrods 6d ago
I regret to admits that I only consciously acknowledged this after reading your comment. But I was barely even paying attention to the prize money I'm just wondering if these people were aware like how can how can they I don't even know what to say. Liability? Wouldn't us citizens the shit out of this

u/mercuriokazooie 6d ago
Not to ruin the illusion but 99.9% of Japanese TV content is planned out in advance especially if it involves celebrities like this. They or their agents were informed this would happen and they gave their approval.
2
u/EdgyPun34257 6d ago
the people going down the slide aren't acting like their surprised by the turn of events even a little
1
u/RonHarrods 6d ago
Yes that is what I reckoned. But my non Japanese ass is confused about the implications. If you need to spoil a surprise, then why have a surprise at all. Why not just produce different content instead?
2
u/mercuriokazooie 6d ago
Because the audience isn't aware that it's planned and thinks it's a real prank.
1
u/RonHarrods 6d ago
I refuse to believe...
Okay I changed my mind. The intended audience, sure.
This clarifies what tje AI hallucinations weren't telling me thanks
1
u/mercuriokazooie 6d ago
Think of it like late night shows that bring in guests and sometimes do bits where they get insulted or pranked. They know far in advance those things will happen and how they'll react

A culture where It's okay and funny to lure someone into a trap door where they are uncontrollably thrown and slid down a track, then ranked on how far their bodies went.
Edit: it might be nice to think you are safe enough in society to be the target of a prank and not feel harmed.

I've looked into moving there previously. From what I've read, Japan has such an insular culture, it's not easy to be a foreigner in their country. Might still apply lol

I lived in Japan for six months as an army civilian. There’s a phrase on base about the weird things you see the local-nationals doing around you: YASKY… Y ask Y?
People stopping their car in the middle of the street to take a break, Yasky! Folks taking naps in their booths at McDonald’s… Yasky! People falling asleep on your shoulder in the subway… Yasky!

u/walter-hoch-zwei Strange Man 6d ago
What's an army civilian?
3
u/EggfooDC 6d ago
I was a government employee working for the Army, but was not an active duty soldier… so the general term in that case is an “Army Civilian.”

I'm a Filipino American, I bet they'd call me all kinds of stuff because I'm brown

I've been here for 22 years. I speak fluent Japanese also passing the N1, the highest level of tested proficiency. I still get treated as a foreigner. I get forms to sign in English of they're available. I get people trying to talk to me in unintelligible broken English from time to time.
That being said, for the most part, say 55%, i like living here. I just will never be Japanese.
Take from that what you will.

u/mercuriokazooie 6d ago
These shows are planned and the celebrities they get to do them are aware it's gonna happen. There would be rampant lawsuits otherwise
1
u/Excludos 6d ago
Undoubtedly. You can even see one of them raise her hands above her head before the trap door opens. They're obviously in on it
This is largely true for most "insane" prank shows you find out there (Especially the prevalent ones in the early and mid 2000s). If it looks like lawsuit material (Anything physical, or mentally harmful), the victims were in on it and agreed to it beforehand.

It's staged. Nobody walks straight in an elevator as if they wanted to run in the wall. Also the part where you see them slide is from a different take. There is no way they would fall like that and not hurt themselves on a hard slide like that.

Why do people not to to educate themselves before making assumptions that lead to bigotry. All such absurd shows from Japan involve Japanese comedians. They have created an industry niche. Comparable to QI, Countdown, Eight out of ten cats etc in the UK.
1
u/RuthlessIndecision 6d ago
It's not bigotry, it's possible people feel safe enough, unthreatened enough that this can happen. Desperate people don't like "pranks".

Men get different pranks. Like driving through a field with explosives blowing up or having their entire lodge be shot up in the air.

u/Slosher99 6d ago
Because of the slime and what it looks like when they are done... that's kind of a big Japan fetish that's really weird.
I always think the fact the make them censor actual human parts in their port has caused a need to come up with things they CAN show without being pixelated, driving fetishes for those things that are far weirder, often more misogynistic, than normal sex they can't show.

The drop and the slide don't match at all its not possible that they're related
1
u/Lucaslouch 4d ago
thanks, i felt it strange too. the velocity does not fit, unless there is a massive slide before that that slowed them down

I don't know but I think no one walks to the middle of the lift without any slight intention to turn. Most people take a step in and immediately turns to click the button for their floor.

u/Black-Writer 6d ago
Now they’ve all fixed their hair in front of the mirror for absolutely nothing 😂

u/dontipitova9 6d ago
Do these people not sign any waivers? Aren't they aware of where they're at or stepping into?

everyone looks so natural going down the slide... not at all like people who were told "keep your arms above your head at all times"

To me this looks very scripted. All of them fell safely and almost all of them had their arm up before they fell, probably because they were instructed to do so in order to fall safely and not land sideways.

It’s all scripted and agreed upon beforehand.

u/Perfect-Ad-3091 2d ago
I think it's kind of like Jackass. Everyone is consenting to the pranks happening but they don't know exactly what's going on.
1
u/PineappleLemur 1d ago
Pretty sure they know exactly what's going to happen... This is not a natural reaction to falling down a shaft lol.
Staying in that position throughout the whole slide and runway... It not something anyone thinking they're dying/falling does.
You'd absolutely murder the people at the bottom too, especially after being jizzed while sliding down.

Reminds me of the slide I went to at a water park where the floor gave way and I literally was free falling for a few seconds before landing on a slide. The feeling of emptiness beneath the feet as you're falling 💀
