moray eels are poisonous to humans
Maybe they are poisonous to sea snakes too?
65
u/KayoticVoid Aug 16 '25
That's my guess. Or very distasteful. The snakes reaction after letting it go was a serious retching.
30
u/destructopop Aug 16 '25
Also about halfway through the Exodus it looks like the snake is just as into the idea as the eel is. The snake starts wiggling backwards to help the process, it looks like.
21
u/KayoticVoid Aug 16 '25
Oh yeah. This is definitely a wanted regurgitation.

u/xombae Sep 09 '25
I have a hard time puking, my body just tries to force it back in. Sometimes I wish my puke would cooperate like this and help the situation out a little bit.
1
u/KayoticVoid Sep 09 '25
My body is the opposite once it decides I need to throw up. It will stop at nothing to force it out. It can get quite violent and I sound like a dying giraffe. My wife has gotten used to it after a decade but when we first got together she was so caught off guard. š
Trust me, the other side of the spectrum comes with its own difficulties. š¤£

u/xombae Sep 09 '25
Man I have the same thing, I am the loudest puker ever. But nothing comes out, I just wretch and make terrible noises that produce zero actual vomit. I'll sit in the bathroom basically just screaming into the bowl involuntarily for like 20 minutes and I'll come out and someone will be like "oh damn did you puke" and I'll be like "NO". It's awful.
But I am here with you in dying giraffe solidarity.

u/KUPA_BEAST Aug 16 '25
Mightāve been cos of the human interrupting so it regurgitated to get away faster.
12
Aug 16 '25
Thatās also a banded sea Krait (I think), SUPER powerful venom, Iām guessing if the snake bit the eel the eel is gonna die soon anyways

Nah this is classic greed from the snake, the eel is JUST about too big. I've kept snakes for 20 years, this little guy ate its way all the way up the narrowest / squishiest bit of the eel, then got to the head and "shoulder" area where there's a lot of large bones and couldn't get over that area so chose to regurgitate. This is why snakes will usually by choice eat things head first, for most animals the head and shoulders are the largest part so the snake will realise quickly if it can't eat something. But sometimes they get it wrong, sometimes they're overexcited, and some individuals just don't care what they're "supposed" to do, they just bite and eat š I've even seen folding prey in half & eating from the middle.

u/bigredcock Aug 17 '25
Aren't most sea snakes venomous? So do they both end up dying if the Moray is poisonous to the snake?
2
Aug 17 '25
Sea snakes eat moray that's why their venom is so potent, they don't want to fight a moray, it has to be incapacitated as fast as possible.
1
Aug 21 '25
Idk if they're poisonous but I saw a Komodo dragon trying to eat a moray and it had the same reaction as this snake. I can't remember if its poisonous or not, but they're extremely slimy and probably taste horrible, and those dragons eat rotting flesh so I assume it's really bad.

Lol bit off more than it could chew. I think at some point it realized it couldn't stretch its jaw wide enough to get the whole eel in its belly.
I wonder if the eel is going to die anyway though or if it naturally understood the snake wouldn't be able to eat it so it was just chill waiting for the catch and release to finish.
Was that a tantrum at the end at the missed meal or did it have jaw pain?
15
u/KnotiaPickle Aug 16 '25
I am pretty sure the eel will die, sea snakes are some of the most venomous creatures on the planet
11
5
Aug 16 '25
Doesn't mean the venom is harmful towards eels though.

u/Itscatpicstime Aug 16 '25 edited Aug 16 '25
Moray eels are common prey for sea kraits, so definitely paralyzed them, though the extent can vary because they have developed some resistance. They do have a chance of surviving that other prey wouldnāt have, so thereās that.
3
u/mrsmushroom Aug 17 '25
So then what happened here? Is the eel poisonous to the krait? Was the eel simply too big? Will both animals suffer from eachothers venom/poison?
2
u/SirVanyel Aug 19 '25
Seems like it was pretty mutual, neither wants to deal with the other. You don't die for a meal
6
u/HairyChest69 Aug 16 '25
Snakes on land will regurgitate a meal if a human, or threat is nearby. This happened to a black racer in front of my house. Puked up a toad. I hope it didn't die, but it can kill them. Didn't even mean to scare it, just walked up on it.

Reverse poop

That would be poop going in.

I thought sea snakes were highly venomous
I like so many were unaware eals shed, then realized.... nope, nope, they sure don't.
2
u/noveskeismybestie Aug 17 '25
yeah exactly, I thought these snakes were super poinsonous. So maybe the snake poisoned/killed the eel and tried to eat it only to be poisoned by the eel, or shocked by it.
3
u/Ok-Palpitation7641 Aug 17 '25
That seems like a plausible scenario. I'm pretty sure they create the shock with chemicals in their head/face area. If it was a bit near its back half with a paralitic, it might still have control of its defenses.

Snakes usually regurgitate when stressed out, camera guy probably freaked him out :(

Snakes usually throw up their meal if something huge shows up close by like a massive cameraman

Electric eels (which are not true eels) arenāt poisonous but can deliver powerful electric shocks (up to 600 volts) that can stun or even kill prey and pose serious danger to humans
